"Will," you say, "you and I can go with Renault. If anything happens, he can fetch everyone back the quickest." You turn to the zombie. "You'll be all right on your own?"
She nods. "I have been so far."
You turn to Sonia and Max, who don't seem thrilled with the pairing arrangements. "Good luck." You, Renault, and Will walk along the rightmost path. Well, you and Will walk; Renault floats through the air, several inches off the ground.
You notice that Will seems unable to take his eyes off the hovering specter. His gaze follows him as he drifts over your path, as though if he stares at him for long enough, he might begin to understand what makes him keep going.
Finally, he says, "Renault?"
Renault rotates, looking at the Head Boy without a change of direction. "You called?"
"I was wondering…" Will hesitates, then, swallowing, pushes on. "I was wondering about the afterlife."
Renault doesn't offer much in the way of reaction. After death, you suppose, it takes a bit more to surprise you. "I see," he says, still floating backwards ahead of the Head Boy.
"It's just…" Will pushes on. "I've always had a bit of…well, you could call it a worry, I guess, about what happens. You know, when you…" He shrugs. "Well, you know."
"Probably," Renault says, nodding gravely. When he next speaks, there's an awkward expression on his face. "The thing is, it's not that simple. The process isn't as…neat as fiction makes it seem."
Despite his words, Will's face shows pure eagerness, as well as something that could well be hunger. The ghost glances at you, clearly signaling that now would be a good time for you to intervene.
