"Okay, the most important thing is not to panic," Will says, switching to what he probably thinks is a reassuring tone.
"Seems like a reasonable time to panic, honestly," Michelle remarks, examining the vines with interest. "If I was about to get eaten by some hideous monster, I'd be kind to myself and panic just a little."
"No, Will's right," Sonia says, her tone determinedly calm. "Once the magic field appears, you want to stay really still, otherwise it'll burn you if you touch it."
"Great," you say, teeth gritted. "So just wait until the monster shows up and try not to flail as it chews on me?"
"Well, if you remain still enough, the vines might release you," Sonia says. "They only react to movement, so it's possible to trick them."
"You said the magical field burns," Will says, looking with concern at the vampire. "Could it burn the vines?"
Sonia considers this for a moment, then she shrugs. "Maybe?"
"Or we could try to break them," Max volunteers.
"No," Sonia sighs, shaking her head dismissively. "There's a toxin on the vines: it paralyzes you on skin contact. Kan's only okay because he's wearing trousers."
You take a moment to be grateful that your choice of attire this morning had, indeed, included trousers.
"So basically," Sonia goes on, "play dead, fight your way free, or use this thing against itself."
