Chapter 9 - The Lord Hates Humans

The mansion became eerie at this time. Edna tried to avert her mind and kept herself busy. After washing all the clothes, she hung them to dry.

The garden in the back was also abandoned. She thought that at least the back garden had to be taken care of, considering that Luca said that Lord Maximillian preferred to have dinner in the garden.

The garden was covered with dry trees and bushes. In the middle, there was a table and chairs near the dried and mossy fountain statue. Edna looked at the garden with pity. She then glanced at her pocket watch. She still had a few more hours before her master returned.

She lifted up her long sleeves, revealing a small tattoo that circled around her wrist. She couldn't remember how she got the tattoo because most of her memories before she was seven years old were lost. Edna took all the equipment to clean the garden. If the garden was clean, her master could enjoy his dinner pleasantly.

Edna did everything under the blazing sun, starting from sweeping all the piles of dry leaves and burning them to ashes, and also cutting some branches and trimming the shape of the bushes. Finally, Edna cleaned the moss on the fountain statue.

Edna realized that what she was doing was just a waste of time. Luca said that they would leave this place later. It would be abandoned again. So in the next few weeks, the dead leaves would pile up and the moss covered the statue again.

"Hm… it looks much better," muttered Edna who was satisfied with her work. Even though it was not spotlessly clean, at least the garden now looked more pleasing to the eye.

Edna tidied up everything before three in the afternoon. She took a slice of bread for her lunch, then returned to the room. From the window of her room, she could see the front yard of the mansion. When a carriage passed the black iron gate, Edna also could see it.

There was still some time before dinner. Edna used the time to take a nap.

The atmosphere in the dining hall was tense. Edna had prepared two portions for Lord Maximillian as well as Luca. She placed the food on the table where Luca and her master had been sitting, waiting for the food to be served.

"You tidied up the garden, Eden?" asked Luca.

Edna was a little taken aback because she always reminded herself not to make a sound near her master, Lord Maximilian. Edna only smiled and then backed away, waiting for Mr. Maximillian to finish his dinner.

Luca just laughed then continued eating his food. The two of them ate in silence. With the cool night breeze blowing gently, Edna became a little sleepy. She was starting to feel exhausted from standing there. Neither Luca nor Lord Maximilian made any sound to speak, making the atmosphere even more suitable for sleeping.

Edna mustered up the courage to raise her head. When she looked at Luca's expression, it seemed that the man quite enjoyed his dinner. It made her curious about what kind of expression her master had right now.

Edna could only watch his back. The man also didn't say anything. Again, she became curious about her master's real voice.

Then, the two of them finished their dinner. Mr. Luca told Edna to stay in the garden accompanying Lord Maximillian who was sitting all by himself.

"Wait here for another thirty minutes. If after thirty minutes, Lord Max doesn't ask for anything, then you can rest for today."

Edna could only answer with a nod of her head, not daring to utter a single word.

Luca then brought the leftovers. "Thank you for preparing dinner for us. Master said your cooking is delicious compared to the previous servants."

Edna frowned in confusion. When did the two speak? Edna was certain that all she heard was silence. She didn't even see Luca moving his lips at all.

Edna just nodded. It looked like she was really sleepy because she couldn't focus on her work tonight.

Edna checked her pocket watch. After thirty minutes of just standing without doing anything and because she felt tormented by the awkward silence, as promised by Luca, Edna returned to her room. No voice came out of her mouth.

Until the next few days, Edna did the same thing and it became her routine.

In the morning, Edna prepared breakfast for her master. Then, at nine o'clock, she made coffee and tidied up her master's bedroom in five minutes. Ten to three in the afternoon was her free time, and she used it to clean the mansion they lived in.

Starting from cleaning the garden, the mansion to the front yard, Edna wasted no time. She should at least show her gratitude by making the mansion they stayed in a comfortable place.

When Edna was pulling down the high curtains on the window, suddenly the mansion door swung open with a loud thud.

"Fucking humans! I will kill them tomorrow."

"My Lord, perhaps this is just a misunderstanding. We can look for the person once again."

"The hell with humans! We've already postponed this! Are you a fool?! If we search for her any longer, we will be in this disgusting place even longer!"

"But My Lord… we have no other choice but to extend our stay here. We've come this far. It would be a disappointment if we returned empty-handed."

"FUCK! I will curse them all after this!"

"My Lord…"

Edna, who was at the top of the window, was silent, feeling scared. This was her first experience seeing and hearing her master get mad. For several days of living in hiding, she never heard or saw her master get mad like this, although Luca said that their master had a bad temper.

And experiencing it right before her eyes terrified Edna. She did not have time to get down the ladder she was using and could only stiffen in her place, hoping her master didn't see her in this condition.

"What are you doing up there?" asked Maximillian in a sharp tone.
