Chapter 11 - Chapter 11. Back amongst the living

"Eva ..she needs this," Conrad argued with Eva to let Cassie go in and be with William. He couldn't understand why this waiting was necessary. Not while his sister was still suffering. It just seemed so cruel to prolong their separation. He couldn't help but think what it must be like and marvel at his sister's strength.

The woman was reluctant as she glanced back over at the monitors. " No, Conrad, I don't think this is the right time for a happy reunion. Please understand, I know you want to help Cassie, but this isn't the time..not yet."

"Babe, I get what you're saying but look at her. She has been through hell. That's just a few minutes of hand-holding going to hurt? Will isn't even awake, and who knows if he even will wake up at this point. I know you're nervous about what's happened before, but he's strapped down in there ." Conrad smiled sweetly, turning on the charm and running his hands down the collar of Eva's lab coat. Maybe it was wrong of him to use such intimacy to get what he wanted, but at the moment, Conrad didn't care; he needed to make Eva listen to him.

Eva chewed on the inside of her lower lip, flitting her dark gaze over to the young sibling of the man she loved.

The woman in question is sitting with Luke and Felicia.

She had wished Luke had consulted her beforehand about going to fetch them. They all came into the lab after hearing the good news. She could see Cassie looked much better than she had in the corridor of the hospital morgue hours earlier. But still, there was that pang of concern; Eva knew if the shoe were on the other foot, she'd have an angry face demanding to see her lover.

"..I.." she started but was interrupted by the military man.

"How about this? I'll go in with her. What better protection than me? I promise you, babe, the first sign of anything hinky, and I'll have my sis out of there faster than you can say, Thriller ." Conrad beamed, hands on his hips at his indeed complete proof plan.

"Alright...but I want your word. If I tell you to get out, will you listen?" Eva honestly didn't want the worst to happen.

The worst is Conrad having to shoot and kill William again right before his sister. She knew the man could do it and would do it without hesitation, even if he felt destroyed after he did his duty to protect everyone in that lab. That wasn't something Ava wanted to see Conrad do or have Cassie witness not after everything the young girl had been through.

After Conrad had told his sister the good news, Cassie managed her first smile in hours of the terrible ordeal. She was going to see William, and everything would be okay; it was the mantra she kept saying in her head as the pair passed through the secure corridor listening as the door locks opened and they were let into the observation bay.

Cassie couldn't help but notice William still looked so....dead. She barely even notices Conrad beside her anymore as her feet carry her forward.

Her mind kept telling her, I want to be close to Will. I need to touch him. I need to know this is all real.

Cassie found herself seated on a metal stool beside the bed, her eyes wracking over the face of the man she loved more than anything in this world. His once strong arms held her and made her feel so safe, strapped down, so cruelly. She wanted to weep to see him in such weakness. But he was back; that's all that mattered; he was still hers, as selfish as that felt in her heart.

Yet she was selfish just this once. Her whole life Cassie was always so pleasant and passive about everything. Just this once, this one single solitary time in her life she wanted to be selfish about this.

"William, can you hear me? " She said, reaching up, brushing the hair off his forehead, carding fingers through the soft silky locks. He still felt so cold, and it hurt her.

The intrusive thoughts began to run rampant. "What if Con lied to me? What if this was nothing but a ruse to try and help her cope?"

However, that didn't make sense either. Amid this unbelievable situation, she had to believe that all of these people were here for a reason. As fantastic as this idea was, it was real, and she had to trust that.

She had to hang onto that little thread of hope.

Conrad stood back, overseeing his sister, silently hoping for the best outcome for this situation. Cassie didn't deserve this amount of pain in her life. His sister was sweet and gentle; she cared about people. There wasn't a violent bone in her body.

Inside the lab, Eva watched the monitors intently; the brain waves were erratic and not tapering off. In the least, she didn't like this at all, but at present, it didn't seem that their first human subject was posing an immediate threat. The woman hoped luck was on their side.....
