As the dust settled, Jon stood victorious, surrounded by defeated mercenaries, remnants of the chaotic battle. The room was filled with a tense silence as he caught his breath, his heart still pounding with the rush of adrenaline.
Jon proceeded to jump down to the lower floor where the unconscious and bloodied Victor lay, and then headed towards the door to find an exit.
Down in the open hallway, now rushing toward the elevator on the level, he found out it had been disabled as the entire 20-storey building had been put on lockdown. "This is not good," Jon muttered.
Just then, he felt a sharp sting at the back of his neck. Reaching out to determine the cause of the pain, he pulled out a venom dart bullet from his neck. The venom from the bullet was a special mix of chemicals developed to temporarily incapacitate all anomalies regardless of what powers they possessed.
He had not foreseen the extra squad of mercenaries who stayed as backup coming up behind him. They had landed on the roof of the building and come down into the building from the roof access entrance just on the top floor where Jon came from.
Jon now feeling woozy, was unable to lift a muscle, feeling as heavy as lead.
He staggered a bit as he tried to attack the mercenaries before he imminently fell to the ground, lying helplessly as he was unable to move. The mercenaries trooped closer to him, taking their stance as they aimed their guns down at him, ready to take their shot.
Just as the bullets were about to rain down upon him, Jon desperately tried to seek an escape route from his precarious position.
Suddenly, a blur of movement caught his eye. The glass of the large window down the wide hallway shattered, sending shards flying in all directions across the passage.
It was Myles, soaring through the air, coming in from the window with incredible speed and grace. In an instant, he materialized next to Jon, shielding him from the barrage of gunfire with his new and improved bulletproof armor.
In a split second, taking the opening available, Myles launched himself at the mercenaries, landing jabs and blows at the men. He disarmed them one by one, grabbing hold of their weapons and swinging them away as he maneuvered across the passage, throwing several kicks and punches at them, and taking them off their feet.
Just as the last standing mercenary proceeded to draw his sidearm—a Desert Eagle gun—against Myles, he performed an excellent swirl flip, landing his thick black boots at the side of the mercenary's face, smashing his head into an ornamental table just beside the wall.
Now, all the mercenaries lay incapacitated and partly conscious, groaning in pain.
Before Myles could relieve himself, he noticed the sound of heavy stomping boots coming up the stairs to the passage.
In an instant, he reached into the utility hatch on his trousers, retrieving two tiny metallic spheres.
He threw the spheres to the ground at the corners of the door that led to the staircase, which resulted in them exploding, releasing a thick screen of smoke spreading across the hall and blocking the entire line of sight.
Now using his peripheral vision, he quickly grabbed hold of Jon, carrying him in both hands as he ran towards the other side of the passage, desperately seeking an exit.
In a failed effort, Myles ran back to the middle of the room as he had no other routes of escape. Just then, an idea sparked in Myles' head. He began heading back to the room Jon initially came from.
Reaching the room, Myles stood a bit, analyzing the area before looking up and spotting the large hole in the ceiling above.
Gathering a great amount of momentum, Myles took off, jumping into the room above the level.
He proceeded to run towards the roof security access doors up ahead. Just as he opened the door, he was met by a squad of special forces (police) making their way down into the building from the top. In a quick act of retreat, Myles turned around ran back into the building and shut the door behind him.
It seemed that the shots fired on the floor had alerted the special forces. The police had arrived once again and surrounded the scene, now converging from every entrance of the building, desperate to uncover the identities of those involved.
Myles gently dropped Jon to the ground as he contemplated his next course of action. Desperately seeking an exit, he grabbed a chair that lay on the floor and jammed it below the doorknob, securing the locks of the door
Still in a state of confusion, Myles peered through the room, seeking a solution to his current predicament. Graciously, his eyes caught sight of the walls concealed by curtains, which adorned the sides of the room. They were made of reinforced glass panels, all lined up perfectly against the building. "That's it!" Myles said, figuring out a possible escape route.
Interacting with the device mounted on his wrist, Myles called out, "Stiles, are you there?"
"At your service, Agent Nitro," the assistant replied.
"How high up are we?" Myles questioned.
"We are approximately three hundred and twelve feet off the ground," Stiles replied.
"That's pretty high," Myles mused.
In the sequence of events, the police had reached the roof access door and were now attempting to force it open as they rammed against it.
Down in the room below, the police had also managed to clear the thick smoke and approached the hole leading to the upper floor.
"It's now or never," Myles said as he tapped one of the buttons on the device placed on his wrist, activating a feature in his suit. The seams of his suit instantly began to glow, emitting a bright red light.
Myles hastily lifted Jon, securing him with the straps on his shoulder, tightly fastening him against his back. "Well, here goes nothing," Myles muttered to himself.
With a rush of adrenaline, Myles sprinted towards the wall, preparing to jump. Just before he impacted the glass, his suit released a burst of kinetic energy, shattering the glass and sending scattered furniture flying across the room. Myles leaped through the broken window and started descending the side of the building.
Quickly, he activated his grappling device mid-air, tightly gripping it as he swung away. They had narrowly escaped the clutches of the police, leaving them in awe of their audacious escape.
As Myles swung through the city, carrying Jon on his back, they disappeared in the distance, leaving behind a trail of chaos and confusion. Their journey was far from over.
