Chereads / The Iron Jaguar: A Tale of Coslevia / Chapter 11 - Forging Bonds

Chapter 11 - Forging Bonds

In the wake of Ilkin's sudden decline, Maksim took his first step into the world of diplomacy. Leaving the mountain estates of Coslevia for the bustling cities of neighbouring nations was not an easy task. He missed the familiar peaks and valleys that he called home, but knew this was a crucial endeavour.

He arrived in Vostovia, a city renowned for its vibrant markets and technological advancements. The first meeting was set with Viktor Smirnov, the head of a prosperous trading family. They gathered in the Smirnov's grand hall, its walls adorned with symbols of their wealth and power.

"Welcome, Maksim Xekhai," Viktor greeted, his voice echoing around the room. Maksim thanked him, taking the proffered seat. He took a moment to study Viktor; a man with a sharp gaze and an air of undeniable authority.

"I hope your journey was comfortable?" Viktor inquired.

"It was, thank you. The sights of Vostovia are unlike anything I've seen before."

Viktor chuckled, "We do pride ourselves on our city's beauty. Now, to business?"

Maksim nodded, readying himself for what was to come. Hours passed as they discussed potential trade agreements, negotiating terms that would benefit both families. Maksim's keen business acumen shone, his knowledge impressing Viktor. The discussions concluded on a promising note, marking the beginning of a prosperous relationship between the Xekhais and the Smirnovs.

The following day, a grand dinner was arranged in Maksim's honour. There he met Viktor's daughter, Natalia Smirnov. She was a woman of radiant beauty, matched by her intelligent eyes and quick wit.

"I've heard much about you, Maksim Xekhai," she said, her eyes gleaming under the chandelier light.

"I hope all good," Maksim chuckled.

Natalia raised a brow, "Depends on one's perspective."

Their conversations flowed easily, sparking a connection between them. Maksim found himself intrigued by Natalia's knowledge about politics and the world beyond the confinements of their homes.

Days passed with the forging of both, a strong business partnership and a bond of friendship with Natalia. His departure from Vostovia approached, and with it, a bitter-sweet farewell.

On the eve of his departure, a secret meeting was held with the Council of Vostovia, an influential political body. Maksim, despite being an outsider, was invited to discuss the political turbulence in Coslevia.

"Your father is a respected man, Maksim Xekhai," one of the council members began, "We are concerned about the rumours of rebellion in Coslevia."

Maksim nodded, acknowledging the concern, "These are trying times. But rest assured, the Xekhai Corporation stands firm."

The meeting ended, leaving Maksim with a sense of foreboding. The political undercurrents were stronger than he had anticipated. As he walked back to his quarters, his thoughts were interrupted by a sudden commotion.

Looking ahead, he saw flames, bright and terrifying. His heart pounded as he recognised the source – the warehouse where they stored their newly-acquired goods.

He raced forward, the heat of the flames searing his skin. Men were shouting, trying to douse the fire. But it was spreading fast, swallowing everything in its path. His heart pounded as he saw the symbol of his family's prosperity go up in flames.

Suddenly, a figure appeared in the chaos – Natalia. Her face was ashen as she looked at him, her eyes wide with shock. "Maksim," she gasped, "the contracts..."

His heart sank. The signed trade agreements with the Smirnovs, which were to be taken back to Coslevia, were in the warehouse. He could only watch as the future of his family went up in flames.

As the fire reflected in his eyes, Maksim stood amidst the chaos, the consequences of the disaster crashing down on him. The loss was significant, the political implications dire, and the cliff edge of his journey suddenly looked a lot steeper than before.
