Chapter 15 - The Mountain Prodigy

Maksim's world felt as though it was crumbling, yet he stood tall amidst the chaos, his father's words echoing in his mind: "Protect our legacy, Maksim... Trust your instincts..."

As the city of Crestwell succumbed to sleep, Maksim was wide awake, his mind a battlefield of strategies and counter-strategies. He knew the loss of the blueprints was not merely an act of theft but a strategic move against his family. He had to find out who was behind this, and more importantly, what their endgame was.

Over the next few days, Maksim took charge of the investigation, his days filled with long meetings and sleepless nights. He had two main tasks at hand – finding the traitor within their ranks, and preventing the designs from being sold to their competitors.

His relentless pursuit of the truth started showing results. One of the security personnel, under heavy interrogation, confessed about having been bribed to switch off the surveillance during the theft. However, he claimed ignorance about the identity of the perpetrator. Maksim wasn't surprised; such stealthy operations were often carefully planned to leave minimal traces.

During this crisis, Maksim found a pillar of support in Natalia. She was his solace amidst the storm, her strength and faith in him unwavering. Their late-night conversations were a blend of personal comfort and brainstorming strategies, their bond growing stronger with every shared triumph and trial.

"Could it be Viktor?" Natalia asked one evening, her voice hesitant.

Maksim shook his head, a sigh escaping his lips. "As much as I'd like to blame him, he's not capable of such a meticulously planned betrayal. No, it's someone else. Someone we haven't suspected yet."

Their conversation was interrupted by a knock on the door. It was one of Maksim's most trusted lieutenants, Lev. He looked grave as he handed over a letter to Maksim. It was a blackmail letter, a demand for an exorbitant amount of money in exchange for the stolen blueprints.

The perpetrator had made a crucial mistake. The letter was handwritten, and Maksim immediately recognized the distinct style of writing. It was Yeva, his father's trusted secretary. He had never suspected her, but now it all made sense. Yeva had unrestricted access to the Corporation's blueprints and documents. Moreover, she was always aware of Ilkin's health condition.

Fury bubbled within Maksim, but he kept his calm. He now had the advantage of knowing the enemy. But he needed to tread carefully, without letting Yeva suspect that he was onto her.

In the following days, Maksim spun a web of deception around Yeva. He began making plans to pay the demanded ransom, ensuring Yeva believed her plan was succeeding. Simultaneously, he set up a trap to capture her during the money exchange.

The night of the exchange was one fraught with tension. Maksim, Natalia, and a team of trusted associates were stationed at various points around the arranged location.

Suddenly, a shot rang out, echoing through the silence of the night. Before Maksim could react, he felt a sharp pain in his shoulder, his body hitting the ground as the world blurred around him. "Maksim!" he heard Natalia scream.

But before he could reassure her, darkness consumed him.
