Adam's body sagged with exhaustion, the weariness seeping into his bones after hours of relentless fighting. Even the surge of leveling up to level 9 couldn't fully alleviate the overwhelming fatigue that washed over him. He couldn't remember the last time he had a moment of respite, constantly pushing himself to survive in this unforgiving dungeon.
His stomach growled, a reminder of his meager sustenance. The only nourishment he had managed to scrounge up was the meat of the spiders he had encountered earlier. It wasn't the most appetizing of meals, but it kept him going. Determined to replenish his energy, Adam made his way to one of the fallen Beta wolves and set to work on dressing the kill.
Memories of hunting trips with his father flooded his mind as he skillfully skinned and gutted the wolf. The knowledge acquired during those bonding moments served him well now as he deftly prepared the fresh meat. Gathering firewood from the forest, he started a small fire and placed the meat on a makeshift spit, the tantalizing aroma filling the air.
As the meat cooked, Adam's hunger grew more pronounced. With each bite, he felt a renewed sense of vitality coursing through his veins, replenishing his weary body. He couldn't help but savor the roasted wolf meat's taste, appreciating its nourishment.
After satisfying his immediate hunger, Adam set to work on the remaining wolves. He meticulously skinned each one, the fur offering potential warmth and protection in the uncertain future he faced. As he moved to the Alpha, he took extra care, knowing the significance of its pelt. There was a primal connection between man and beast, and he believed that the Alpha's skin held some form of power or symbolism that could aid him in his journey.
With the pelts carefully folded and stored, Adam decided to take only the leftover meat from the first Beta wolf he dressed and the Alpha. He knew he couldn't carry all the meat with him, and the priority was to conserve his limited resources. He packed the meat in his bag, ensuring it was secure and easily accessible for his future sustenance.
As he finished his tasks, Adam couldn't help but ponder the state of the outside world. Uncertainty loomed, and he couldn't shake the thought that civilization may have crumbled, leaving a bleak landscape in its wake. He would need every advantage to survive if the worst-case scenario played out. The wolf pelts represented a form of self-reliance and adaptability.
With a weary yet determined gaze, Adam surveyed the aftermath of the intense battle that had taken place in the forested chamber. The defeated wolves lay scattered around, a testament to his skill and perseverance. He took a moment to catch his breath and assess his next steps.
Consulting the system, Adam checked the remaining time he had to complete the dungeon. The display showed a little over 15.5 hours left, a reminder of his limited time to overcome the challenges that awaited him. It was crucial to make the most of every moment.
His gaze shifted upward, drawn to the sprawling branches above. Spotting one of the largest trees in the vicinity, Adam decided to take a much-needed break. Climbing the tree with practiced agility, he settled himself on a sturdy branch and set the alarm on his phone for a brief 30-minute nap. He knew that even a short period of rest could rejuvenate his weary body and sharpen his focus.
As Adam drifted into a deep slumber, time slipped away, and the weight of exhaustion momentarily lifted from his shoulders. The alarm jolted him awake, and he found himself feeling remarkably refreshed. The brief respite had done wonders for his energy levels, preparing him for the challenges that lay ahead.
Determined to press on, Adam retraced his steps and embarked on the path toward the third round. He marched towards the farthest end of the chamber, his steps measured and purposeful. With each stride, he steeled himself for the unknown dangers.
To his delight, an opening to the next round materialized before him as he stepped into a short cave connecting the chambers. The new system message greeted him, revealing the nature of the upcoming trial.
[Trial of Endurance - Round 3: The Goblin Village
Defend yourself and eliminate all the Goblins.
Enemies:
Goblins: 30
Boss: Goblin Warchief]
Moving forward, Adam was assaulted by the most putrid stench he had ever encountered. The noxious odor enveloped him, reminiscent of an unkempt public restroom that hadn't seen cleaning in years. The pungent amalgamation of urine and feces permeated the air, threatening to make him sick. Swiftly, he reached into his storage gauntlet and retrieved an extra shirt, hastily fashioning it into a makeshift mask to shield his nose and mouth.
Undeterred by the foul smell, Adam pressed on, stepping into another enclosed chamber. Unlike the previously forested areas, this chamber resembled a cave adorned with short shrubs and sparse greenery. The absence of towering trees allowed him a clear view of the small huts that dotted the landscape. He observed the presence of small, green humanoid creatures, the goblins clumsily moving about the makeshift village, wielding crude and dilapidated weapons. Some of their weapons bore the remnants of fecal smears, a sight that made Adam's stomach churn.
[Cave Goblin - level 10]
Cautiously, Adam crouched down and approached the village, attempting to blend into the surroundings and remain unnoticed. As he drew closer, he noticed a gathering of goblins in the center of the village, forming a circle around a particular event. The grunts and sounds emanating from the center hinted at a crude form of entertainment, which he initially assumed to be a friendly match among the goblins. However, his assumptions were shattered when the shifting crowd revealed a disturbing scene that made him wish he could erase the image from his mind. The goblins in the center were copulating while the rest eagerly awaited their turn, watching the spectacle with perverse fascination.
The revulsion welled within Adam, but he knew he couldn't allow himself to be paralyzed by disgust. He shifted his attention to a couple of lone goblins lurking near the back of a hut, secluded from the main gathering. Recognizing the advantage of stealth and the unfavorable environment for an open confrontation, he decided to eliminate them discreetly. Swift as a shadow, Adam closed in on the unsuspecting goblins and swiftly severed their heads, silencing them forever.
Peering into the vacant hut, he confirmed its emptiness and proceeded to conceal the evidence of his kills as best he could, covering the bloodstains and hiding the bodies. With calculated precision, he silently dispatched six more goblins who presented opportunities for assassination, careful not to attract the attention of the others.
Though the village teemed with numerous goblins, Adam recognized the need to exercise caution. It was clear that a direct confrontation would lead to overwhelming odds and little room for escape. Determined to outmaneuver his foes, he assessed the surroundings, searching for a strategy that would enable him to exploit their weaknesses and thin their numbers further.
