Annette watched her disappearing back and tightened her grip on the wooden floor. She breathed heavily, and the hot tears she was preventing from falling began to drop from her eyes onto the floor.

Mr. Hamilton's footsteps echoed as he ascended the stairs. He stood before Avelina's door and turned the handle, opening it. He stepped into the room and shut the door behind him, locking it to make sure no one would interrupt.
He glanced over at the bed to see Avelina sound asleep. A disgusted look emerged on his face, and he stood by a corner in the room, his dead gray eyes watching her.
The clock on the wall ticked, its sound reverberating within the room.
