If her mouth was able to function in the middle of the night, then she might've screamed bloody murder the second her eyes opened.
All her life, she had imagined stumbling off a cliff to her eternal doom after she had met Ezekiel Wei face to face. She had imagined her life to become a chaos of misery and fear, she had thought that sleeping would be impossible and rest, entirely unattainable.
The face in front of her was the very picture of peace. A peace promised to haunt her for life. His long lashes lay on top of his cheeks as if they were designed to be that way, his hair was tousled deliciously, and his lips were set into a thin line as if he was too tired to even fear about having a dream or a nightmare.
Swallowing her scream, Haven carefully sat up and frowned when her shirt fell off from what seemed like her forehead. Her eyes once again fell on the man crouched on the ground with his face placed on her bed in the most uncomfortable position possible. For some disturbing reason, he didn't seem like a monster at the moment. Just a normal, breathtaking guy who was exhausted from his day and still managed to take care of her.
"..."
Ezekiel Wei, the very man whose name brought chills to a human, took care of her!?
'This is a dream, isn't it?'
The pain she endured after pinching her already-flushed skin proved the exact opposite. This was quite real and she didn't know what to think about it. So like every other time, her mind tossed it at the back of her head to ponder about later when she felt better and didn't have a murderer in her apartment looking like an innocent bunny.
"Where are you going?"
Every single nerve in her body froze, sending a chill down her spine as if she had been trapped in an icy grip. The air seemed to thicken around her, making it difficult to breathe as she turned around, her movements almost sluggish with trepidation.
And there he stood, his gaze lazily fixated on her, his eyes like pools of molten silver, radiating a captivating intensity that seemed to penetrate her very soul. It was a look that transcended mere words, igniting a spark within her that made her catch her breath once again, her heart pounding in her chest as if it were a wild creature desperate to break free.
Clearing her throat, she raised a brow in question. "Where am I going? Nosey little fucker aren't you?"
A chuckle escaped his lips and Zei's eyes widened, trying his best to disguise it as a cough instead of a laugh. If somebody else had said that, they would be hanging off a tree after he had finished skinning them off.
"And this nosey little fucker." he spoke, testing the words on his tongue, amusement glimmering like stars in his ashen orbs. "Is the one who took care of you all these hours while you snored—"
"I. Do. Not. Snore!"
"Count drool in that too—"
His mouth closed on reflex and he backed away as fast as lightning, missing the fluffy pillow aimed at his face by only a few inches. "Calm down, wild kitten."
"Don't call me that!"
"I won't." he relented and resisted the urge to scoff when she stared at him dubiously. Why the hell does she think so low of me!?
[Maybe because you're you?]
"Only if you eat the medicines I brought for you from the nearest store."
Haven's brows narrowed down further. "But I already had my pills."
"Oh."
Pursing her lips into a thin line, she resisted the urge to laugh with all the strength she possessed at the moment. Her mind worked on thinking about something else and came up with a new topic in only a few seconds.
"What the fuck are you doing in my house?! Ever heard about breaking and entering—"
"But I'm not a stranger." he interrupted, grabbing the plastic bag and handing it over to her. "So it can't be counted as breaking and entering."
"How the hell did you even get in here..."
"None of your business."
"Leave. Get out," she ordered, pointing her finger to the door after she finished swallowing the bitter medicines that Gavin had bought. Who knows? Wei might be lying and probably poisoned the ones he bought.
"I would've but you're the one who told me to stay," he explained with a cocky smirk on his face that made her want to breathe out fire. "You grabbed my hand and begged me to stay, saying you didn't want to be alone."
She parted her lips, intending to refute him and prove him wrong, but as the weight of his words settled upon her, her eyes widened in sudden realization. A wave of apprehension washed over her as she comprehended the undeniable truth concealed within his statement. It was an eerie sensation since she had become accustomed to unknowingly vocalizing her innermost thoughts during her slumber and inadvertently perusing her past recollections like a fragmented narrative.
'Fuck me.'
'But hey, now's the best chance to get close to him! Get as much information as possible while he stays here and takes care of you.' her subconscious recommended and Haven rubbed her temple, feeling the fever resurface due to the sudden excitement her body was going through.
"Sit down and wait here while I make something for you to eat," he spoke and before he departed for the kitchen, he paused on his way and turned around. "Don't think for a second that I'm doing this out of the kindness of my heart."
Haven stuck out her middle finger as soon as he turned around again. After making sure that her laptop and important files were still where she last left them in the locker, she leaned back against the pillows wondering about the sudden turn her life had taken after meeting him.
A sharp turn but useful nonetheless.
'If I was a bird, I know who I'd shit on.'
