Chapter 27 - Bloodshed

March 2, 2016.

I've always wondered how scars would feel on my skin.

Now that I've gotten them, I don't have the courage to let anybody else see them.

I'm a coward.

A disappointment.

I hate Wei but sometimes it feels as if I hate myself more...

"Not bad." he smiled at her for a brief second before turning around once again to commence shooting. The sound of glass shattering echoed around the area and Haven's hand itched for a weapon of her own which she could use.

Sitting idle in the middle of a fight had never worked for her.

"Who the hell are they?" she hissed out, but he didn't pay any attention to her, all his focus set on eliminating the remaining players of the game.

"Only two of them left—" he murmured but was cut off when Haven screamed out in panic.

"Watch out!"

As soon as his gun showed up in front of his targets, a bullet hit it making Zei drop his revolver which landed at a considerable distance away from the ground.

"Fuck." His back rested against the car, his hand coming to brush his hair away. "Now what?"

"You both better come out now! No place to hide about anymore!"

Haven stared at the man beside her, his eyes darting around for a solution to this tense situation. If someone had told her that she would be sitting beside him one day and thinking about how to save him, she would've choked them first and asked questions later.

"Let's do as he says." his gaze shifted to her and Haven held her breath, still unused to his undivided attention entirely on her.

"I have no plans on dying this soon, just so you know," he said.

Haven rolled her eyes. 'Says the guy who just killed three men without batting an eyelash.'

"They'll think we're willing to surrender when they see us walking out with our hands in the air. Then when one of them approaches me to take me away, I'll overcome him. They have no clue that I'm capable of defending myself too." she explained and saw his eyes twinkle in the dark, reflecting the very stars glimmering up in the sky.

"Can I trust you to not get killed?" Haven's brows unknowingly narrowed down. If she died, it would be nothing more than a burden off his shoulders. Shouldn't he be relieved if that could be the outcome? Why was he worrying for her out of all people?

He confused her more than anyone had ever done.

"Are you underestimating me, Gangster?" she smirked but wondered if it appeared more like a comforting smile considering the look on his face. "They might be stronger than me but I'm confident they aren't faster."

She continued on, rolling up her sleeves and missing the kaleidoscope of emotions that crossed his face at her words. "And anyway, the worst that could happen is that I end up dead—"

Stop.

She paused the instant the voice resounded through her mind, glancing at Zei for a second before doing a complete double take at his face. 'Why the hell does he look... angry?'

"If you end up putting your life in danger because of a stupid, noble reason." his eyes darkened. "Then the bloodshed in this entire City will be on your hands."

Swallowing hard, she looked away before her lungs closed in because of lack of air. Why did he care, she asked herself as he stood up and placed his hands beside his head, glaring a last warning in her direction before walking out.

Did he not care that she could run away and probably end up escaping?

'Probably not since he would find me within 24 hours of my escape.'

The smug look on the men's faces made her blood boil but Haven remained silent, her patience untested due to her past in dealing with such pests and low lives. The same couldn't be said with the look on Zei's face when one of the men grabbed her arm and yanked her towards him.

If looks could kill, the man would've been burning in ashes by now.

"A pretty face and dreamy eyes." he glanced at his partner. "I see what he sees in her."

Haven's eyes widened slightly when the other man chuckled and approached Zei cautiously from the side. But that wasn't what shocked her out of her wits. The smoke in his ashen orbs seemed to have evaporated into oblivion, leaving behind charred remains of the fire in his eyes.

And his eyes were black. Completely, utterly black.

It nearly knocked the breath out of her.

"Come on, sweetheart." the man holding her slurred. "Let's go and have some fun—"

Without wasting another second, she high-kicked the guy's hand, making him drop his revolver to the ground. Zei followed closely behind, disarming the man by hitting his wrist and snatching the gun out of his grip. It was the work of a second but she couldn't help but smile when she saw a flicker of pride glitter in his dark eyes which she still hadn't gotten used to.

The echo of a gunshot echoed in the air and Haven glanced back to see that Zei had killed the guy without delaying another minute. Hitting the man's head with the backside of the gun, she stepped back as he fell to the ground and lost consciousness instantly.

"See?" she flipped the gun in her hand and smiled at him. "Told you not to underestimate me—"

"Be careful!"

Her smile dropped, her heart almost freezing inside its cage as she felt the hard metal of a gun at the back of her head. Turning stiff the next instance, she dropped her gun to the ground and raised her hands to her shoulders.

Haven cursed herself internally. Carelessness in a fight led to ultimate doom. How could she have forgotten the most important rule in her life?

'Because of him.'

"An interesting girl you got by your side, Joker."
