'What does the description mean?'
"I don't know; I only read what is there."
"What's your name?"
"Errmh, Morrigan…"
"Totally opposite to your description."
"…What?" The little girl looked confused.
"Don't worry, I like to talk to myself. Doesn't the church in this era take care of you?"
"They said that it was full."
"Want me to take care of you? I can be your guardian until you find a home."
The little girl started hesitating; she had unfortunately just met two people who promised her a home and food but became forceful when she refused.
Seeing this, Dante smiled and stood up.
"I'm not going to force you, am I? I have nothing to gain from taking care of you anyway. Well, I'm going to leave now; see you later, if you're alive, that is."
As he was about to continue walking down the slums, he felt something tug at his sleeve. When he looked down, the little girl had timidly grabbed him; she was shaking. Maybe she is thinking about the days she will have to consume dead rats or human corpses...
"…please save me…" Her voice was very quiet, but it contained immense frustration and determination.
This made Dante's smile grow extremely creepy, but it was not visible to her as she hung her head low.
After a few moments, she felt some on her head as she was being patted by him. As if this were the drop that spilled the water, she let out her heavy burden in the form of tears.
She then fell into an embrace as Dante hugged her, slowly patting her back, trying to make her safe. "he then fell into an embrace as Dante hugged her, slowly patting her back, trying to make her safe. "Don't worry, I'm here. Everything's going to be alright."
Her sobs and tears finally stopped, but Dante's hidden creepy smile turned even more deranged.
…
Deep in the night, in a slightly dense green forest, a boy and a girl could be seen. The little girl held his hand as he led the way in.
After a while, they arrived at a cave, and in it were small scavengers like foxes and raccoons who were chewing the leftover bones from before.
When they entered the cave, they could see tons of famished animals. They didn't care who came in; their hunger was too strong to care about something like that.
They thus continued trying to chew the strong bones, trying to relieve their insane hunger.
A lot of already-dead scavengers could be seen, all their flesh having been consumed by everyone. They didn't dare to fight among themselves, as it would give others the opportunity to kill them.
This vicious limbo couldn't be undone because everything in the forest had been razed by the abomination from before.
"Skull, clean up this mess."
When the animals heard this incomprehensible gibberish, they quickly fell one by one at the hands of a black blur. They died so quickly that they didn't make the slightest sound; their necks were cut open.
"This used to be an old friend's home; however, I don't know where all these little guys came from." Dante wasn't really lying.
"You're going to stay here for a while; no one is going to try to forcefully kidnap you. I will let Skully stay here and protect you from any predators."
The girl, of course, didn't feel safe at all and wanted to rebuke him, but it was she who had asked for help. So she just gritted her teeth and silently stood there.
"I'm going to be back tomorrow, hopefully in a better place than this."
With that, he made his way toward the village, on his way to take the magic train.
…
"I can't."
"Mister, but why?"
"I can't allow a child that young to attend the academy, and certainly even less take her in because of her circumstances."
"But it's just a child!"
"How many orphans have lost their parents during the war? If we were to accommodate these in the academy, we would lose prestige and money.
We can't allow such a thing to happen. I do want to make an exception, but this exception will lead to other exceptions.
Do you see what I mean? It will just become a vicious cycle."
The vice principal was about to dismiss him when a figure appeared behind Dante. When he saw that, he quickly stood up and bowed to him.
"Welcome back, Principal Morvain
The person had long, untied black hair; his eyes were black; his facial features were extremely beautiful; and his face was chiseled. He exuded an air of mystery and horror, as if his eyes were hiding something terrifying.
"Marcel, have you become so corrupted by mortal burdens that you would refuse this youngling's praiseworthy request? This isn't like the old you."
"I-I'm sorry.. The nobles and royalty have pressed the matter of commoners getting into the academy. I don't want the already-attending commoner kids to suffer from them."
"Ho, it seems that they thought my not being around meant that I'm dead. They even dared to pressure my academy; maybe my neutrality has made them think I am invisible."
When the principal said the last sentence, Dante felt a huge aura press on his shoulders, and he tried everything to stay up.
"Principal, please stop teasing the kid; he has just recovered and suffers from memory loss."
"Hmm, interesting. Being able to resist this much killing intent is praiseworthy for his age. Oh, I see." When he got closer and took a look at Dante, he found something 'interesting'.
"Yes, he's from 'that' place." The vice principal confirmed his doubts.
"But tell me, youngling, why should I admit that little girl?" It's my academy, and I get nothing from it, so why would I bother?"
Dante's still-red eyes turned gray, and in a calm and tired voice, he said "She is blessed."
When they both heard that, their eyes slightly opened in shock.
"Hoo, and would you mind telling how you—"
"My innate ability. It lets me slightly see others' characteristics." Dante cut him off, already knowing
"Alright then. I was going to admit her if she had the talent anyway; a blessing at that is even better. She will, however, just live here until she is of age to study magic or swordsmanship."
"You will, however, take care of her."
"Alright, alright, thank you, kind sir!" Dante's eyes returned to their red color. This, of course, didn't go unnoticed by them, but they decided to stay quiet.
He then left the their office and headed for the forest.
