Jessica let out a small groan, stretching her arms above her head. Soft moans of pleasure escaped her thin lips as she felt her back crack with the new movement. Having spent the last four hours hunched over her desk working on her homework, she knew it was time to call it quits.

Craning her neck to look back at her bedside table, her alarm clock's bright red numbers flashed Eleven Forty-Seven. Letting out another loud sigh, Jessica stood from her desk chair and decided to get herself a drink of water.

She picked up her phone and began texting her friend Angela.

-Assignments from Finstock, all done.

-Great, that dipshit is not one of my favs, like ever.

Jessica chuckled. Finstock is nobody's favorite, except maybe one. A figure of a black-haired boy with a cheeky grin flashed into her mind before vanishing. But he is a weird one, so that doesn't count.

-Wanna hang out tonight? My Mom's not gonna be home till late?

Jessica texted, pouring herself a glass of water from the jug. She leaned against the cabinet as she sipped.

-I want to but…

-But what?

-I'm at Eric's.

Jessica almost dropped the glass but caught it at the final moment before placing it over at the table.

-DUDE!

-No! No, No. I just came here to study, nothing happened. Frl.

-Sure, says every other girl that had a baby nine months later.

Jessica smiled. She knew Angela was a slow girl, but it was still great to tease her to the world's end.

-Geez, I'm being serious!

-Yeah, I hope you used protection.

-Come on, I'm leaving the chat.

Jessica stopped at that and shook her head. It was enough for tonight; she would continue all day tomorrow.

-No, wait! I was hoping you could come here; I don't mind Eric, nobody is home tonight, and I'm just bored.

After a moment of waiting, Jessica received a message back.

-Are you sure?

-Absolutely, oh, get some beers while you can.

-Fine, we will be there in 20.

-Ok, Mama.

Jessica chuckled as she placed her phone in her back pocket before gulping down the entirety of the glass.

Once she placed the glass back on its case, she wondered what they would do once they were here; a movie sounded like a good idea. It has been a long time since she has watched one; Angela might not like it, but Eric is a movie nerd, so it won't be hard to convince her into it.

She sighed as she felt her stomach growl for a light snack. Jessica picked a pouch of instant popcorn from the shelf and threw them inside the microwave; the timer set to three minutes.

She was about to leave to check on the living room; just then, the landline suddenly started ringing. It made her jump a little as nobody used landlines these days.

'Fuck.' She muttered internally as she picked up the nearest receiver.

"Hello?"

"Hello." A male voice came through the other end.

"Yes." She replied.

"Is Michelle there?" She raised her brows as the caller asked for her mother.

"No, she is not available. May I take a message?"

"Um.. yeah." He seemed preoccupied. "Sorry, I'm a friend of hers from Group… oh shit!"

"From her shit?" It made her crack up a snort.

"Look, just tell her I'm from Group, I'm Billy, she's got my number."

"Oh, she goes to therapy?"

That was new ground for her; she knew her mother, and she had been distant for a while, but to not even know that her mother's going to therapy, she slightly felt ashamed.

"I shouldn't have…" He mumbled as he figured he had snitched on her mom. "Just tell her that Billy called."

"I will do exactly that, Billy." She continued trying to get more from this guy.

He sounded somewhat worried about her mother, which made her question whether her mom was seeing him recently.

"Once you tell me what kinda group we are talking about…"

"I can't discuss this-" He was speaking over her, but she wasn't going to back down.

"Is it AA? NA?"

"Wow, you sound exactly like she described you."

"She talks about me in Group?" She asked as the popcorn finally finished.

"I can't really talk about that."

"What does she say about me?" She took out the packet and opened it as the smell of corn hit her like a truck.

"Well, she loves you very much." That's just vague.

"What does she love about me?"

"She loves that you are creative. You love art, TV, and movies."

Movies used to be her escape before her parents separated; she guessed her mom still remembers that.

"Lots of people love movies."

"Yeah, but she says you love scary movies and that you guys have that in common." She sighed reminiscing about the times they used to watch it together on every weekend, but then her mom got busy. "She's proud of making a fan out of you."

"She is?"

"Yeah."

"She told me the other day, she wonders 'What's your favorite scary movie?'."

"The Babadook." She answered nonchalantly while throwing popcorn into her mouth. "That's an amazing meditation on motherhood and grief."

"Isn't that a little fancy pants?"

"Well, that's elevated horror." She explained.

"Uh-huh, what does that mean? Elevated horror?"

"You know it's scary with complex emotional and thematic underpinnings." Guess this guy is old school. "It's not just some schlocky, cheeseball nonsense with wall-to-wall jumpscares."

"Sounds kinda boring to me." And old-school he is. "Have you ever seen Stab?"

"Once, I think, at a sleepover when I was 12." He chuckled from the other end with some kind of irony in his tone.

"You live in Beacon's Hill and you don't know Stab? Your mother loves that movie; she talks about it all the time in Group." He sighed. "How well do you remember the original?"

"I don't know, I mean it was super 90's, it was really over-lit and everyone had weird hair."

"That sounds about right, but do you remember the beginning?"

"Not really." She slumped on the couch. "It started with a kill scene right? They always started with a kill scene."

"Yeah, that's right, that's right." He sounded happy. "It's a girl at home, alone, she answers a wrong number and starts talking with the killer, who makes her play a game, would you like to play a game, Jessica?"

Jessica immediately cut the call as she felt the change in the tone of his voice. She stood up from the couch and ran towards the door, making sure it was locked before doing a check on every other entry to the house.

The phone rang again, making her jerk up. She gulped down her spit, hoping this was just a prank from Eric.

"What do you want?" She asked.

"Why did you hang up on me?" He laughed. "Scared?"

"I'm not scared, if this was an idea for a prank, you suck Eric!" She barked before terminating the call once again.

She wiped the sweat off her face and had 911 ready to dial on her mobile, when the landline rang once again.

"Listen Asshole-"

"No! You listen, you little bitch!" He roared from the other side, making her take a quick sniff. "That pink top looks great on you."

"Oh god." She muttered as tears began to trickle in the corner of her eyes.

"Scared I might get all your gut spread over it?" He snickered like a hyena. "Don't worry, I'm thinking about taking things slow this time, enjoy every moment with you."

"Stop it, you psycho!" Jessica cried as she dialed 911 from her mobile. "I have already called the cops and locked all the doors; you can't come in, leave before they break your mouth!"

"Hmm, what makes you think, I'm not already in?"

A pair of hands reached out from the darkness and closed Jessica's mouth from behind, while the other one choked her neck.

"Hmmmmphhh!!" She screamed in panic as she dropped her phone and began to hop in an attempt to escape.

The call went through and was picked up.

"Hello, this is 911, what is your emergency?" While the speaker waited, Jessica had lost her breath and knocked out of breath.

A hand picked up the phone and spoke. "Sorry, my daughter made an emergency dial."

"Be more responsible sir." The speaker yelled.

"Yeah, I'm sorry." He looked at the unconscious girl. "She can be a 'little mischief' sometimes."

"Well, I hope you give her a talk; we won't want this to be a repeating one."

"Yeah, it might be just the last." He smirked.

"Have a good day, then."

"Yeah, you too."
