Chapter 9 - Thwarted My Plan

'Conscious and precise'. I whispered, silently in my thoughts.

This could probably be my only chance at a surprise attack. I had to take advantage of it and make it count as much as possible.

I crept up from its side with my sharpened branch ready to obey my actions.

As I assumed, the absurdity won't notice me unless I make loud noises or extravagant moves.

To perfect my cover, I smacked the tip of my branch into a tree that was by my side.

Then, I waited for the absurdity to react which it surely did.

By a hair's breadth, it passed me by from the front and went to the tree by my side.

I was now up close and personal, getting a close side view of the absurdity and feeling its heavy breathing.

My heart was unsteady, but I managed to keep it in check and from making any alarming sounds.

I wouldn't say I kept it in check, more like my body's function was unilaterally and unconsciously working with me.

With ease and silence as my accomplice, I positioned myself directly in the face of the absurdity, now within two inches of its reach.

I could not afford to gulp even though I so wanted to. Instead, I raised my sharpened branch and in one fully armed thrust, I pierced it straight through its chest.

You would have to assume my surprise when the branch failed to penetrate the skin of the absurdity.

I was so shocked my body was stunned with my eyes opened wide.

The plan was to stab and make a run for it, have the absurdity follow the sound of my steps to where I wanted it to.

That plan however could not be carried out as my body froze in time, allowing the absurdity to react to my attack.

The absurdity swung its arm and whack!! I was sent tumbling several meters from my starting point.

I abruptly landed on a tree, and a disturbing sound was made as if my backbone had cracked.

With fear and panic, I tried to get up thinking that I wouldn't be able to due to my cracked backbone.

Contrary to my thoughts, my body pushed forward and I successfully got my whole body up from the ground.

I was grateful.

Hurriedly, I got up and ran away from where I landed. It hadn't been long since I got up when the absurdity came swishing by with its long ominous claws.

It gashed down the tree I crashed into. Any second later and I would have been a goner.

Without looking back, I made haste to my intended position, and all the while I purposely let out sounds of footsteps so that the absurdity would follow behind.

As I was running through the forest, I noticed that something was slowly getting within my view and blurring my vision.

Not even trying to make a stop, I took my hand to my head and wiped off what was clouding my eyesight.

What my palm drew was a red-painted liquid. I was bleeding, but I did not know exactly what part I was bleeding from, or how far the spot that gushed out blood.

None of that mattered much to me. If I stop now, I die at the hands of the absurdity that is following right behind me.

If I don't stop? I still have a chance at survival regardless of how deep my wound is.

Hastily! I folded my body down and rolled to my left, barely managing to avoid the absurdity that lept from my back to my front, easily catching up to me.

I knew I was in danger without having to turn back, but I had no leisure to question how I knew!

I stood back up and continued running, this time picking up the pace I was working with earlier.

The absurdity got agitated with my agile movements. It chased me for as long as I ran, constantly getting in front of me with ease, and in some cases, it even managed to get its claws to graze past a part of my body.

Counting the amount of grazing done, and the total number of times I had felt something brush past my body while I was running, I would say I have accumulated about thirteen flesh wounds in my body.

Nonetheless, I could not care to get distracted by such. I had to keep on going, and on that, my body agreed with me.

It was a game of tag, and the absurdity was IT until it came into contact with me, and contact I cannot allow.

I struggled and struggled then finally, I got to my designated spot with fresh marks on my body, oozing out blood in small drops but at an alarming quantity.

I stopped and turned in the direction the absurdity was coming from.

My eyes were peered in the dark ahead of me as my body remained stagnant, waiting for the absurdity to reach me.

To not make it lose track of me, I constantly bang down my leg in the same precise spot I stood, like a knock on a door indicating that someone was out there.

I could feel the weight of the breeze getting heavier as it blew past me.

The absurdity was closer than ever.

Suddenly! The breeze stopped blowing violently, and I with my eyes facing to the front, expected the absurdity to pop out any moment.

My wait was not long as I noticed a shadow cast above me. Without the need to raise my head, I instantly rolled my body to the side.

The absurdity from above, landed where I had just moved away from.

"Damn it!!". I agonized.

It had thwarted my plan with its unpredictable movement. If only it had done as I wanted it to be coming at me from the front rather than from above!

'Does it perhaps have the intelligence to see through my plans!'. I wondered with barely any time to stay idle!
