Chapter 9 - Uneasiness

The feeling of his hot tongue against the nape of her neck sent sweet shivers down Eve's spine, and she impulsively closed her eyes when he bit her neck slightly, heightening the heat that was ready to consume them both.

He showered her neck with non-stop kisses. So much so that she couldn't help but anticipate his next move when she saw his right hand move down a bit to unbutton her white long-sleeve shirt.

He was about to do what was on his mind when suddenly...

KNOCK!

Eve's eyes flew open at the sound of someone at the door. Out of reflex, she pulled away from him in a flash.

She kept her eyes focused on the door as she hurriedly buttoned up her shirt.

"Who is there?" Xander asked his voice cold and revealing a hint of irritation after being disturbed by his make-out session with Eve.

He moved to his desk and acted like nothing happened.

"It's me, Griffin." The guy at the door responded firmly as he arranged his collar.

He dared not attempt to enter the door without gaining his boss's permission first, knowing exactly what the consequences might be if he acted unruly.

"Come in." Xander finally gave his orders and signalled Eve to take her leave to avoid suspicion from the rest of the staff.

"Yes, I...I will take my leave now, Sir," She quickly bowed her head and made her way to the exit of the door.

Upon reaching the door, she almost collided with Griffin who stepped into the office.

"Ah... I am sorry." Griffin took the initiative to apologize first, seeing as he nearly crashed into her.

But the lady kept her head lowered to prevent him or anyone from noticing her flushed face.

"That is ok," she mumbled with her head still bent slightly.

After the exchange of apologies, Eve hurried out of his office without gazing at the face of the man she collided with.

Griffin approached Xander's desk after Eve had left the two of them alone, and Xander immediately got to the reason why he had sent for Griffin.

"I learned rumours are going around that my late wife Giavanna has re..." He trailed off when the idea of her being alive and back still made his heart race with fear and anger.

He stood up from his executive brown chair and sauntered to the front of his desk where Griffin stood. His expression, cold and stern.

"I want you and your men to investigate if these claims are true and the source of the rumour." He commanded strictly with his hands stuck in his trouser pockets.

"Tomorrow is the award night. It doesn't matter how you go about it. I want results before the award night takes place, am I understood?" He grunted, his fierce glares shot at Griffin.

"Understood, sir. I will get on it immediately."  Griffin responded with a quick bow before turning around and exiting his office.

Releasing a soft sigh after being left alone, Xander glanced at the nameplate on his desk which had his title CEO boldly written on it, and different emotions graced his visage at once before it hardened into something more devious.

"I have done everything within my power to get to where I am right now. I won't step down or step aside for anyone even if that person is you, Giavanna." He deadpanned, his deadly glares glued on the face of the lady on his photo frame on his desk.

"Your best and safest option right now is to be dead because there is no longer any place for you here anymore!!"

Out of blind fury, he grabbed the photo frame and threw it hard on the brown-coloured tiled floor, shattering the glasses that shielded the beautiful woman's picture in it.

The remaining part of the day didn't go pleasant for the two people who were still terribly haunted by the thought of the rumoured woman's return.

Their uneasiness transcended to the next day.

In the office, Xander found it difficult to concentrate his attention on anything regarding work no matter how hard he tried.

He kept pressing the bottom of his pen, listening to the clicking sound it made as it was the only thing that could soothe his nerves presently.

Just then, his phone beeped, and without wasting a second, he scrambled over the phone as if he was fighting over it with someone.

The moment he unlocked his phone and got a glimpse of the sender, his mood dampened, and he flung the iPhone 13 pro max over the table as if it were another burden he was forced to deal with.

"Only three hours left before the award night starts, yet, not even a single update from Griffin!!" He shouted and sprang to his feet, getting furious as he clutched his hair before bringing his hands down to his waist.

He walked forward and stood in front of the glass wall just behind his executive chair.

He quietly peeped out. His mind was too unsettled to focus on anything regarding work.

"If I dare as much as to discover that this delay was because he slacked while on a mission... I will deal with him in  ways I have never done." He fumed, anger blazing in his eyes as he looked away.
