Chapter 38 - A Mistress

The restless Xander patiently waited for closing hours when everyone must have left the company. He deliberately gave Eve a lot of work to handle so she won't be able to slip off.

After he had confirmed that almost everyone had left the office Xander called Eve into his office.

"You called for me, Sir," Eve announced with her head bowed.

"Eve, it's just the two of us here so there is no need to put on an act," Xander who had waited for this opportunity for a long time muttered.

He stood up from his brown executive chair and moved to stand in front of her.

"About what happened in the morning..."

"I will take my leave now if you don't have any task for me," Eve informed. She spun and tried to walk away like she has been doing ever since Xander resumed office that day.

"How long are you going to keep this up, Eve?" Xander growled, he held on onto her hand firmly.

"Why?" Eve asked. She tilted her head and glanced at his face. "Am I not allowed to throw tantrums or show how much I am hurting because I am not your wife?" Eve accused him.

"I never said that..."

"You didn't but that stupid wife of yours kept on reminding me of this fact more than once last night," Eve relayed in a sobered tone.

"And believe me, others won't hesitate to remind me of this truth if they were to see us in this position," Eve said to the guy whose grip hadn't loosened from her hand.

"Did Gia say something to you?" Xander raised an eyebrow as he tried to get a glimpse of her face.

"She said and did a lot of things last night that reminded me of who I really was in your life; a title  and a feeling I had forgotten about," Eve said emotionally.

"What exactly did she say?" Xander asked tenderly. He held her shoulders and turned her around so that they were staring at each other's faces.

"A mistress..."

"Giavanna called you a mistress?" Xander yelled, his widened eyes almost falling out of their sockets.

"How dare she say such a thing to you..."

"Her words made me recall my helpless self in the past, my insecurities and even my shortcomings," Eve continued. She raised her right hand and clutched her chest.

"I met you first. We fell in love before she even came into the picture. I am the one you love, but why do I always feel like I am the unwanted one here when that should never be the case?" Eve mumbled, her right hand clenching her aching chest.

"Eve, look at me," Xander instructed. He lifted his hands and cupped her face. He tilted her head so that she was staring into his eyeballs.

"I have never seen you as unwanted or anything less than her. I don't know why Giavanna would call you a mistress but..."

"She didn't call me a mistress. Nevertheless, her actions said it all. It was as if she knew something," Eve alleged.

"That is not possible," Xander blurted to Eve's astonishment.

"Gia told me that she suffered from memory loss. That was the reason why she couldn't return despite her mothers desperation to find her," Xander revealed what Giavanna told him before he blacked out.

"Ever since she returned she has been at home without coming in contact with the outside world. There is no way she would have heard anything about us," Xander defended Giavanna even though he had no such intentions in the first place.

"She lost her memory?" Eve asked, her suspicious stares fixed on Xander's face.

"Yes," Xander asserted.

"Can you believe that she doesn't even recall the fact that she was a sickly woman whose days were practically numbered?" Xander added, thinking that Eve would be thrilled by such news.

"She told you that, and you believed her without verifying the facts?" Eve inquired.

"I mean being sickly is not something anyone needs to remember. For someone like her who gets sick at intervals, her feeble body should have sounded a warning to her, so how could you possibly believe everything she told you," Eve scolded him.

At that moment, Eve forgot that she was mad at Xander to the point that she didn't want to see his face.

"Of course, I didn't believe everything she said and that was why I asked for details of the hospital where she was hospitalized," Xander disclosed. He released her hands after he confirmed that she was more stable.

"I have ordered Kelvin to make a trip to the island she told me she stayed at. He will bring back reports when he is done with the investigation," Xander explained.

Everywhere went quiet after Xander said the words she wanted to hear.

"I will take my leave now," Eve said and turned to leave. Before she could take three steps forward she felt a firm hand circling her slender waist.

"Although, I don't know how I got into bed with her last night or what happened afterwards, I believe I still owe you an apology, Eve," Xander swallowed his pride and admitted his fault.

"No matter what, I shouldn't have forgotten our appointment nor stood you up all night. I am sorry for hurting your feelings once more. Forgive me, hmm," Xander begged. He bent and rested his forehead against the back of her neck.

"I don't think I can forgive..."
