Chapter 26 - Our Hero, Our Father

The chimes of the shop door rang pleasantly in my ears as I stepped into the dazzling world of high fashion. Rows of garments and accessories sparkled under the soft glow of enchanted chandeliers, and the aroma of perfumes filled the air, creating an ambiance of elegance and sophistication.

My heart began to race, my palms sweating as I browsed through an impressive multitude of items, each one more beautiful than the last. To my surprise, some of them even had various enchantments applied, adding a magical twist to their allure.

"Unbelievable..." I muttered, my eyes widening as I stumbled upon a pink floral sundress that seemed to be shimmering with an enchantment. A small plaque nearby read: 'Increases the wearer's charm by 15%.' But then, my eyes darted to the price tag, and my heart skipped a beat. "22 Golden Coins...?"

Next to the dress, a fashionable yellow and red scarf caught my attention, its bright colors dancing with a certain enchantment of their own. 'Increases the wearer's agility by 5%,' I read aloud, captivated by the concept. But again, the price was a staggering 12 Golden Coins.

Continuing my exploration, I discovered a shiny purple purse adorned with an intricate vine design. Its enchantment was what truly fascinated me, though, offering infinite holding capacity, much like a basic Bag of Holding. The price? A jaw-dropping 56 Golden Coins.

I found myself in awe, my mind whirling with excitement. "This dream world is fantastic!" I thought, feeling a sensation akin to playing a video game, where ordinary items possessed extraordinary abilities. The possibilities seemed endless.

But as I continued to browse, reality slowly crept in, and stress began to gnaw at me. My budget, just 5 Golden Coins and 10 Silver Coins, suddenly felt woefully inadequate. My shoulders slumped, and my enthusiasm waned as I realized that these enchanting items were well beyond my reach.

What was I to do? The pressure to find the perfect gift for my mother weighed heavily on my heart. The words of my father echoed in my mind, reminding me of her love for golden trimmings.

I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing thoughts. There had to be something here that was both special and affordable. Something that would make her eyes light up with joy and fit within our budget.

With renewed determination, I continued my search, my eyes scanning the shelves and racks with hope, knowing that somewhere in this magical shop lay the perfect gift. The adventure was far from over, and I couldn't let my insecurities get the best of me. Not now, when so much was at stake.

Navigating through the maze of shelves, feeling both enchanted and overwhelmed by the intricate beauty of the items, I eventually stumbled upon something that made my heart jump. My eyes lit up as they fell upon a handbag, black with golden trimmings, just like my mother's bard outfit from the previous night.

I approached it carefully, inspecting the sleek design. It was spacious yet elegant, perfect for a lady like my mother. The straps were made out of golden chains etched with ancient runes, and the buttons seemed sturdily crafted. Even more surprisingly, the handbag was incredibly light.

"This... this is it!" I whispered to myself, a sense of victory washing over me. "The perfect gift!"

With a spring in my step, I headed to the cashier, clutching the handbag. The shop was unusually empty, probably a consequence of the absurd prices. A silver bell rested on the counter, which I rang gently, feeling a sense of curiosity.

To my amazement, the bell let out a soft, melodious sound that seemed to caress my ears. It was soothing, almost magical. My heart raced as I waited, entranced by the tune.

Seconds later, a door near the cashier opened, and a female elf appeared. Her charm and elegance were unmistakable, with long braided white-green hair, pointy ears, and eyes as yellow as the sun. Dressed in a green and white revealing dress, she made my heart beat faster, something enchanting about her very presence.

"I'm Teroan Wood," she introduced herself, her voice melodious.

I stammered, trying to find my words. "I-I'm Max, Antrodos' son."

"Ah, young Max," she said, recognizing me. "Where's Antrodos today?"

"He's... working," I managed to reply.

Teroan's eyes sparkled with curiosity as she noticed the handbag. "Buying something for yourself, dear boy?" she teased, then quickly apologized. "I don't mean to judge, of course."

"No, no," I hurriedly explained, "it's for my mother's birthday."

Her eyes widened, and she placed a hand over her heart. "Oh dear, I forgot about her birthday as well! How could I?" she lamented.

"We're both bad, then," I chuckled nervously.

She wagged a finger at me playfully. "You must remember and respect your mother, young man. She fed you, raised you, and created you."

I nodded, feeling a mix of guilt and amusement.

With a wink, she added, "Don't forget next time."

Teroan then inspected the handbag, explaining why it was so affordable. "It's not meant for combat," she said, noting the trend for combat-oriented accessories.

"What about charming enchantments on clothing?" I asked, intrigued.

Her eyes twinkled as she recounted stories of my mother's natural charisma, how she would charm both enemies and my father, Antrodos, in combat. I listened in awe, soaking in the tales of their adventures and synergy.

"Would you like to upgrade the bag?" Teroan asked, bringing me back to reality. "It would cost around 10 Golden Coins with infinite holding capacity."

I scratched my head, caught in a dilemma. It was beyond our budget, yet the offer was tempting.

Teroan's eyes softened, sensing my struggle. She leaned closer, her voice gentle, "Max, the decision is yours. But know this, a gift given with love holds infinite value, enchantment or not."

Her words resonated with me, strengthening my resolve. I knew what to do, and with a grateful smile, I proceeded with the purchase, feeling a bond with Teroan and a newfound confidence in myself. The adventure of buying the perfect gift was complete, but the lessons learned and the friendships forged would stay with me forever.

Beads of perspiration trickled down my forehead as my mind struggled to conceive a plan. Teroan, sensing my unease, leaned closer, her elven eyes twinkling mysteriously.

"Why not take on a quick guild quest? You could earn the 5 Golden Coins you need," she suggested softly, the corners of her lips curling up into a gentle smile.

My eyes widened, "Teroan, that's brilliant!" I exclaimed, relief washing over me. "Could you please reserve the handbag? I promise to come back with the coins."

She nodded with grace, her slender hand gesturing a sign of luck in the elven way. "May the winds guide you on your quest," she whispered.

Upon exiting the store, I almost bumped into a familiar tall figure. Antrodos, my father, stood towering outside, a concerned look in his eyes. "Did you have enough, Max?" he inquired, his voice gentle yet tinged with worry.

With a sigh, I shook my head, "No, father."

Seeing my dejected face, he softly asked, "What's your plan now?"

I shared Teroan's idea about undertaking a guild quest. However, as the words left my mouth, I noticed his eyes widening in surprise. "A guild quest? I haven't done one in over five years," he murmured, his voice filled with nostalgia.

"But father," I prodded, "aren't you a Royal Guard? Don't you fight?"

Antrodos chuckled lightly, striking a pose, mimicking a statue with a sword. "My job as a Royal Guard is more this," he said with a smirk.

Confusion clouded my face, "That's it?"

He nodded, "Tarvernia has been peaceful. No wars, no threats. Even incidents like the theft of the Dragon Avatar aren't the Royal Guard's concern; they're for the Peacekeepers."

A pang of sadness struck me as I saw a hint of longing in his eyes. "There was a time, Max," he began, his voice deep and somber, "when your mother and I were heroes, standing side by side during the great war."

I gulped, realizing how much he missed those days, "But father, you're still a hero. To Illyanna and me, you'll always be."

He gently lifted my chin, his eyes meeting mine, filled with emotions. "I might be a statue now, but it's a role I proudly play. It keeps me safe, ensuring I'll always be there for you and Illyanna."

Feeling a rush of emotions, I lunged forward, embracing him tightly. "You are, and will always be our hero, father," I whispered, my voice choked with tears.

He hugged back, a silent promise passing between us, binding our hearts closer than ever.
