Chapter 4 - Trust

I then walked to a classroom and slept by arranging the desk and chair in a manner so that it is comfortable. I woke up at 5:23 am the next day. I went out, did some stretching and brushed my teeth. I then went to the cafeteria and ate my breakfast.

Looking at the food it will last only 3 days if we ate normally, but looking at the way to save more. It will last 7 more days maximum after that we have to go out for supplies. I went to the staffroom and saw Scott looking at his phone. He saw me and said Good Morning and greeted him back.

He then started talking, "That smoke grenade was really filled with that virus." I looked stunned and replied "You really believed that. Do you think I am crazy enough to carry viruses in my bag? This is just a real smoke grenade I picked at home. I was trying to study it."  "Why?". He questioned me. "It seemed interesting, that's all." I replied.

Soon after our bickering Abigail entered the room. She said Good Morning and we said the same thing back. Soon by 7am all the teachers were present. I then asked Scott to call out the representatives of the grades to start the meeting.

He sent a teacher to call them. There was comfortable silence in the room. Soon the students came into the classroom with the teacher.

I then asked "Go and inform the students that if you get into my team you will get as much as food as you can eat. If you are weak at fighting, you can get into the team if you are bright in Biology and chemistry but this condition is only if you are in 12th grade. If you are strong and fast it doesn't matter if you are in which grade. You can go now."

The teachers and students were surprised at what I said. Seeing the teachers not stopping them, the students left.

Scott then asked calmly as if to confirm his thoughts "Why did you do that?". I replied back with the same tone "You know why don't you. Why are you asking then?". "I want to confirm my thoughts." He answered. "It is to show the students that it is survival of the fittest. If you want good food then be selected or you will just survive." I confirmed his thoughts.

Though the teachers are looking dissatisfied, after thinking this was the only way that they can move forward in the future.

The students spread the word and they were as expected dissatisfied. They felt the strong children can only survive and it's unfair.

Then Scott asked the teachers to ask the students to assemble and the teachers left. The students slowly walked in front of the stage.

When they saw me, they remembered yesterday's events and kept quiet. A student raised his hand and said "Mr Adairs, you set the conditions and made most of us unable to get on the team. I feel this is unfair like most of us. So can you set more conditions so others can join?".

I replied to his question coldly "You know most of the members in the team may not survive the first mission. In ancient times in Japan, it is said that Shinobis (ninjas) and Samurais savored every meal that they ate. This is one of the reasons the students in my team can have as much as food they can eat. Another reason is the stamina needed for these dangerous missions. I don't want members who are weak and get killed. Lastly, remember that I don't care if you are angry or not. If you want to survive this zombie apocalypse, then trust me and follow the orders of elders. Before you all are dismissed, if I ever see or hear any rumors of bullying because of your need for extra food. I will release the smoke grenade that I have into the rooms that you sleep. After the rashes are formed, you will wake up hearing screams and screaming as you slowly scratch all your rashes and die. If you fall me and stay on my food side. I will help increase the chance of survival for you but if you are on my bad side. Remember that there is a virus smoke grenade with me. Today at 4pm I will select the team. You are all dismissed."

"That was a little cruel." "This was the only way to make sure they survived Scott. I am sure, most of them tell the story of how they survived this event. This will be recorded in history as well. Anyway can you get me the files of students excluding those that ran away?." I said. He replied "Sure, follow me." I followed him to the staffroom and he opened his computer and got me the files.

I then went to the cafeteria and got me a black coffee. I then walked back to the computer and started looking through the file for finding the students that will be helpful in the team.

It took 5 hours looking through all of them. I got 90 candidates that can join the team. I started again looking through those files of 90 candidates and made them into  25 candidates. 20 of them will join the team and five are their replacement in case they die. Though I hope all of them survive, that thought is foolish. I wonder what happened to the "kind" principal. No need to think about that person. Think about how to kill those zombies. If it's like some of the movies I saw, they survive almost all attacks except the one shot kill. If it's like that then I have to train them how to throw knives accurately so they can kill them. I have to go to the lab and check if my theory about the virus being my colleague's side project is true or not. I also have to get the materials in the lab if I can. I also have to capture a zombie and dozens of mice. So much work and so little time.
