A piece of rock hit a blonde-haired 18-year-old boy wearing glasses as Mr. Petros, his history teacher, ordered him to stand up.
"Orpheus, what did I say last?" Mr. Petros asked.
Rubbing his sore head with his thumb, Orpheus stood up dizzily looking confused.
"Um, the shift?" he answered
"C'mon boy, I said that long ago. Where's your head at, young man."
"Don't mind the late bloomer sir. Maybe he has not awakened his attentive ability. Perhaps he blooms late in everything about him." A bulky boy said making everyone to burst into laughter.
"Marios, you know I don't tolerate jesting in my class." Mr Petros cautioned him although chuckling lightly.
Orpheus sat back on his chair ignoring the laughter from his classmates. He stared into space lost in his own thoughts until he heard the lunch bell. Packing up his books, Orpheus moved on to his locker and dropped them in it ignoring the tissue papers and junks that fell out of it. Walking into the refectory, he tripped on his laces and fell face first to the floor.
Paying no attention to the stares and laughter from onlookers, he was up from the ground. He crouched down to pick up his glasses but could not find them anywhere. Anxiously searching around for them, a hand tapped his shoulder and handed out his glasses to him. Turning to the source of the hand, Orpheus set his eyes on a girl with jet-black hair.
"Thanks". Orpheus expressed his gratitude
"You're welcome." The girl said, "The name's Keres but my friends call me Kers"
Her little introduction caused a very big uproar among the students in the refectory.
"Crap. That's the goddess of death"
"Huh? That's her?"
"What! You did not know. You're a fool mate"
"Damn you man. I just transferred here"
"All right, let me explain. She is the daughter of Erebus and Nyx. Her real name is Ker but she is nicknamed Kers because of her multiple personalities. It seems she's in a good one today."
"Yeah, be careful not to get on her bad side. You may die in that instant."
"Man, don't blag like that. She can't be that potent"
"You're free to try mate."
Kers shot a fierce look at the crowd, making them to draw back in fear. Turning back to continue her conversation, she discovers that Orpheus had already walked away.
"I didn't get to find out his name," Kers muttered.
"You had better not. He's just some loser with a brain disorder and a poor ability affinity." A voice said behind her
"I didn't ask for your opinion" Kers walked away without looking at the speaker.
Marios looked at the direction Orpheus went looking furious.
"Man, why is the refectory so hot all of a sudden?"
"Shit, Orpheus got on his bad side"
"You're right. He's a walking corpse"
"Lunch time is over. We'd better get going"
"That's right. Mr Stylianos is going to penalize us. See ya"
Orpheus scurried back into his classroom hungry and tiredwithout even eating his lunch.
'Man, I'm so hungry and lunch time is almost over'
The sound of the door opening interrupted his thoughts, revealing Marios who walked in immediately after setting his gaze on Orpheus. Yelling Orpheus' name, Marios banged his hand on his. Orpheus looked at Marios wondering what was going on.
"What is it this time?" he asked.
"You've got some nerve to be asking me that question," Marios said while looking at Orpheus with fury. "Listen well dude. Kers is my target and mine alone. You can't just join me in chasing her when you're so weak." Looking closely at Orpheus, he said. "If I get you talking to her again, I'm going to make you feel pain"
Turning away from him, Marios stormed out of the class.
"Why is everyday just the same? I guess I will just visit my parents at home. Make my day a little more interesting" Orpheus cursed at his bad luck and picked up his bag to go home.
On his way home, he heard a feminine voice.
"Hey, we meet again" Kers said.
"Oh hey" Orpheus said, paying no attention to the speaker.
"Like I said before, the name's Kers. What's yours?"
"Huh? Wait, what?" Orpheus jolted once he heard her name. "Shit, he is going to kill me. Bye."
Orpheus walked ahead of Kers, leaving her confused. After staring in his direction for a while, Kers went back into the academy a little embarrassed.
"I see he's looking for pain." A bulky boy muttered while watching from afar.
