Chapter 3 - The Expedition

Rrrrrrrnnngggg

Rubbing his sleepy eyes, Orpheus stood up from his bed. After stretching himself, he left his room to greet his parents.

"Morning, mom" he greeted the middle-aged woman wearing an apron in the kitchen.

"Morning, Athan" Mrs. Katherine said while giving him a tight squeeze.

"C'mon mum, I told you I don't like that name," Orpheus complained, his voice sounding muffled through her clothes.

"I know that. I just want to see you pout for the last time since you are returning to the dormitory today." Mrs. Katherine chuckled lightly "Oh, Athan. Your breakfast is on the table."

"Mum!"

"Hehe"

"What's with the early morning squabbling." A 40 year old man walked into the kitchen with messy hair "y'all gonna wake lil' Kate up"

"Hon, I told you work on your accent," Mrs. Katherine cautioned him "it's going to rub off on the children"

"I'm sorry, ma bad"

"Christos!"

"Bye mum, bye dad"

Smiling lightly, Orpheus left the house and got on his bike. On his way to school, he saw eight familiar bikes at his front yard

'What is Marios doing around this place?'

Brushing away the thought, he rode on to school.

"Go now!" A bulky boy ordered other boys around him.

Breaking down the door, eight boys entered into Orpheus' house.

"Yo, whatchya dudes want with us"

"Ask your son that question, dude."

"Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!"

"Is Marios not in school yet?" Mr Petros asked.

"No sir." The students responded.

'That is unlike him. In addition, his friends are not in school yet. Something is wrong.'

"Just go on" Mr Petros told the students.

Having arrived at the main hall, a hand patted Orpheus on his shoulder. Looking at his rear, he saw a familiar face.

"So your name is Orpheus, nice."

'What does she want?'

Intending to run again, Orpheus finds out that he cannot move from his position.

"Trying to run again?" Kers inquired

"No, I'm not. I swear"

"Cool. Then why did you walk away the first time?"

"You see, after the refectory incident, Marios walked up to me in class and warned me not to talk to you again because of something about you being his woman, chasing you and stuff like that" Orpheus explained.

"So that was what happened. The Dean has arrived. We'll talk later." Kers said seeing the Dean entering the main hall.

"Silence everyone!" Mr Philippos, the Dean ordered making the hall to fall silent "As you all know, your first expedition begins today. I believe you're ready"

"What! It's today?" Orpheus asked in shock.

"Yeah, all homeroom teachers announced it yesterday" Kers notified him.

"Damn, I must have spaced out in class again" he cursed.

"Now, let me briefly state the rules for this expedition" Mr Philippos continued, "rule one, this expedition is for mining gems only which means you are not meant to attack your schoolmate for any reason whatsoever. If you encounter any beast, inform your homeroom teacher immediately. Rule two, always travel in pairs, which means you all should form a group with a minimum of two people and rule three, never forget rule 1 and 2. Thank you." He then left the main hall

"Hey Kers" a feminine voice called out, "do you want to form a team with me?"

"Oh, I do not mind Thalia." Kers walked over to Thalia who was on the other side of the hall.

"What do you see in that guy? He's just some loser who doesn't have any ability yet" Thalia asked Kers after she had walked over to her.

"Oh, that? You know I have the ability to foresee the mortals' death right?" Kers answered

"What does that have to do with this?"

"I couldn't see his. You get it now right?" Kers dropped the bombshell

"What?!"

After all the students arrived at the teleportation room, where the portals are horizontally lined, a man walked up to them.

"Yo, that's Mr Zissis. Although he looks so young, he's the oldest teacher in the academy"

"Really, He's that old?"

"Ahem" Mr Zissis coughed to get everyone's attention "as you have been told, your expedition begins today, and it is meant to last for one week which means y'all know the rules." He paused to clear his throat before he continued, "Now, y'all will be going to planet Zekros and will be handed two devices each, a bracelet and a recorder. The bracelet is for tracking which will inform us if any of you is in danger, which likely will never happen. It can also be used for contacting us"

"In addition, the recorder is for verifying and registering the number of gems you have found. The group with the highest number gems will receive an ability orb but it depends on likeness of you housing two abilities in your fragile bodies. Go on now, and remember, travel in groups."

After his long speech, while everyone began to buzz around searching for their partners, a blonde haired boy stood alone in the middle of the room, spaced out.

"Dude, the late bloomer is spaced out."

"Is he even supposed to be here? I don't think anyone's going to team up with him anyways"

"Yeah, the academy is just going to waste materials on this guy"

Mr Petros walked up to Orpheus and tapped his shoulder. Waking up from his daydream, he turned around only to discover that almost everyone had already been teleported.

"Where is your partner young man?" Mr Petros asked him

"I don't have one"

"I'm sorry but those who don't have partners will not ...." Mr Petros halted briefly to listen to Mr Philippos who had walked over to him

"Just send him anyways. His life will have no meaning if he finds out" Mr Philippos whispered into his ears "do not also give him the devices. He's on his own now"

"Yes sir" Mr Petros confirmed before turning to Orpheus "You can go in"

"Thanks sir" Orpheus gleefully walked into the portal without putting much into the interaction between his homeroom teacher and the Dean of the academy. A minute later, he disappeared.
