Chapter 10 - A New World

A year has passed since my birth and I have come to learn a number of things, the biggest one being not only was I reborn, but in a completely new world. I have also spent the last year learning the language and I now have quite a decent understand of it from my parents and-

?: "Hey! where did you put my sword?!"

My brother, Fabian. I've never had a brother as I was an only child in my previous life, but instead of being excited to have one, I find myself rather annoyed by his antics. He's 2 years older than me, so sure it's to be expected, but god damn is he spoilt.

?: "I put it away, you were harassing your little sister"

This person was somewhat of a caregiver, Alice, who appears to be on good terms with my parents and I. She was the one I practiced most of this worlds language as my parents were usually busy. She also seemed to be rather annoyed with Fabian, I couldn't blame her.

Fabian: "You work for us! You should do as I say"

Alice: "Not until you behave yourself"

It wasn't an actual sword, it was more like a toy, but it was getting annoying being forced to play along with his silly games, thank you Alice. Whenever mom was gone, I'd spend most of my time with Alice, she was like a second mother to me in this world. However, not everything was perfect, as I had to deal with Fabian everyday, it definitely balanced out my joy and happiness with unwanted displeasure.

Suddenly Fabian began to glow a dimly red, as particles began to come from within him. Oh right, that was another thing. This world has magic and apparently everyone has it, however I've yet to be able to figure out how to use it like how Fabian is using his right now. It seems that he has still yet to control it though as Alice quickly disperses his magic with her own, completely wiping away that dimly lit aura of his with her shining, light blue magic, much to Fabian's annoyance.

This world apparently has 6 different kinds of magic; Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Light and Dark, with Light and Dark being a lot more rarer the previous. Everyone is able to use only 1 element, and its extremely rare to find people who can use 2 or more. Alice told me that magic comes from the spirits when we are born when I asked her about it, and is not passed down from your parents. "I wonder what kind of magic I'll have?" I pondered as I hid behind Alice's legs, clinging onto them as I try to avoid Fabian.

Feeling hurt from being trumped by Alice, Fabian storms off to his room, Alice letting out a sigh out loud.

Alice: "He sure can be a handful, right Ellen?"

Looking down at me with a wide smile on her face, her light blue hair accompanied with her grey eyes alluring me as I had never seen someone with grey eyes before in my previous world. "Elegant" was the word that I could best describe her.

Ellen: "I'll try not be a handful towards you Alice"

She really did have it rough with Fabian, maybe it was because I came into the family and stole our parent's attention from him that he is behaving this way. It would make the most sense. Kneeling down, she proceeded to give me a a warm, gentle embrace, my small arms unable to reach around her. The warmth ever so similar to-

Her name is still in my memory after a year of being in this world. Just why have I been cursed to remember her, I loved her. While thinking that, I found myself crying on Alice. I didn't mean to, but it appeared as if she was expecting it.

Alice: "It's okay, Fabian is just being a meanie. You can always come to me if you need Ellen"

So she thinks I'm crying because of that twerp? Makes sense, I am still a baby after all. I must keep the fact that I came from another world a secret, but I feel like if there would be anyone I would tell, it would be Alice.

After some time, my parents come home. They were dressed in fancy, formal attire as Alice welcomes them home, my feet running towards them before crashing into my mom as she knelt down to me.

Alice: "Welcome home, Mr. and Miss's Leinhart"

Bowing her head as she comes to greet my parents, acting as if she was a maid.

Dad: "Please Alice, we've told you many times. We're friends, there is no need to be formal with us"

Alice: "...I apologize. Welcome home. Iris, Oliver"

Alice and my parents grew up together in school, with Alice being a few years younger than them, but after my parents rose to the rank of a ducal family, she had started acting more formal towards them. It was quite a shock to me when I found out that I'm the daughter of a high ranking noble family, trying to act accordingly and not be a nuisance to my parents, or Alice.

Fabian comes running out from his room, his eyes glaring towards me as he notices me wrapped around our mother. His face clearly full of anger towards me, before rushing over towards us.

Fabian: "Did you get it father?"

Our father takes out what appears to be a ring of some sorts, a red gem adorned atop of it as he bends down to give to my brother. He seems happy after getting it, all his anger that he had glared towards me had faded away as he immediately put the ring on his left index finger. Suddenly, the aura he showed before came out from within him once more, this time slightly more brighter and more stable.

Fabian: "Thanks father!"

Smiling happily, he runs off, his red aura now gone. I'm jealous, he gets to use magic meanwhile I'm still struggling to even make anything. I attempt to try to do the same as what my brother did, still clenching onto my mother. However my efforts were in vain, with nothing but a sense of defeat filling my mind. "What could I be doing wrong?" Sure I'm just over a year old, but I'm like 19 mentally! I should be able to do this. Maybe it's 'because' I'm older mentally that I can't do it? Am I overthinking it? Thoughts like that ran though my head as my mother picked me up from the ground, bringing my head towards her chest, as if she knew I was becoming anxious.

Mom: "Don't worry Ellen, I'm sure your magic will sprout soon"

She hit the nail right on the head. The thought of not being able to use magic when I'm in a position such as the daughter of a duke brings down a wave of pressure upon me. I rest my head, trying not to think about it as I bask in my mother's warmth, closing my eyes. I'm glad I have such kind parents in this world too, but I wish I was born in a normal family, one that isn't nobility such as this. Nothing good will come from complaining though, I'll try my hardest to make my new family proud, I WILL learn how to use magic. With a sense of determination clouding over my anxiety I fall into another sleep as I rest up against my mom. Her warmth making the darkness more comforting as I fall deeper into sleep.

Memories of laying in bed with Kaede flashed in my dreams, as I squirm around in my mothers embrace. After a year of being reborn in this world, I still feel pain as I know when I wake up, Kaede will be gone, I wish I could stay in this dream forever, with her. However I also wish I could stop having these dreams. I want to forget, but my mind keeps on showing me her in my dreams. I hate this.

Tears start to flow gently as I continue to sleep, not wanting to let go of Kaede, clinging desperately to her in my dream.

Ellen: "I miss you..."

----------Alice's POV

"What was that language?" I pondered to myself. I had been asked to look over Ellen for Iris while she tended to some urgent business, when suddenly I heard her speak something I could not understand. It wasn't your typical baby noises, but it sounded like a different language entirely. Also she was crying while saying that. Not like a cry from babies either, but a silent cry, almost like she had just lost something important.

I give Ellen gentle head pats, brushing her soft red hair past her face, trying to calm her down.

Alice: "Everything is going to be okay, Ellen"

I whisper trying not to wake her, as I continue to calm her down with soft, gentle pats, trying to soothe whatever pain she is in.
