Chereads / The King's Bishop / Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

Jake woke up to the sound of static noise coming from the television. He was disoriented and confused as he tried to figure out where he was. Then he saw him - a man in a wheelchair sitting across from him, staring at him intently. The man was flanked by a large bodyguard, who stood silently by his side.

Jake was instantly on guard. "Who are you people, what are you doing in my house?" he demanded.

The man in the wheelchair, who Jake would later come to know as Bishop, sat there silently, staring at him. Jake slowly made his way to check on his family, only to discover that their rooms had been destroyed and they were nowhere to be found.

Jake rushed back downstairs and put his hand on Bishop's neck, ready to strangle him. "What did you do with my family...answer me!" he demanded.

Bishop showed him his family on a screen. Angela and Mary were inside a glass case. Jake was horrified.

"Oh God...oh God please don't harm them, I'm begging you. I'll give you whatever you want...just don't hurt them!" Jake pleaded.

Bishop sat there silently, not uttering a word. Jake was getting increasingly agitated. "Are you hearing me? You bastard! Just let them go!"

The bodyguard pulled up a chair for Jake to sit. Bishop finally spoke. "You may call me Bishop, and I want us to play a game, Jake."

Jake was incredulous. "Listen Bishop, or whoever you are. If you think I'm going to indulge you in any sick twisted game, you've got another thing coming."

Bishop sighed and snapped his fingers at his bodyguard. "I have just activated the water connected to the tank your family is in. They will be completely submerged in the next six minutes, and I reckon an absent father like yourself didn't teach your daughter how to swim...I'd say she has 20 seconds before she drowns."

Jake looked at the screen in horror. Bishop continued, "You can either play, or you can let them die."

Jake nodded, defeated. "Okay, I'll play."

In a dimly lit room, the Bishop and Jake faced each other across a chessboard. The Bishop spoke with a calm and collected voice, outlining the rules of the game.

"The rules of the game are simple," he said, "you lose, they die, you win, they live."

Jake sat up, his eyes filled with fear and confusion. The Bishop made the first move, moving his pawn two steps forward.

"Shall we?" he said, looking at Jake.

Jake mirrored his move, also moving his pawn two steps forward. The game continued with each player taking turns moving their pieces across the board.

"Do you know why people instinctively move their pawns first?" asked the Bishop.

Jake looked at him silently, unsure of how to respond.

"Because they are in the way of the Major pieces," said the Bishop, moving his Queen piece diagonally.

Jake moved his King forward, but the Bishop was quick to respond.

"Jake, Jake, I must say, I'm a little disappointed that you would use such an old move set of yours," he said, moving his Queen to take out one of Jake's pawns.

"Checkmate," declared the Bishop.
