Chapter 23 - Something Worse Than Death

Eva took no time. Just after she knew what to do, she slowly opened the door of her office.

Her gaze followed the corridor and she could see the lift at the right-hand side corner. The CEO and the outgoing secretary should have gone to whatever business meeting they wanted to attend.

She steadily walked from her office to the other offices, looking at the small panel on the top of the door to ensure she didn't barge into the wrong office. After passing through the entrances of four offices, she finally saw the panel which had, "Chief Executive Officer's Office."

She swallowed, knowing whatever she was doing was wrong but then, if she wanted to keep her ass from getting fired, she just had to do whatever she was going to do. Looking at the door, she prayed quickly that it wasn't locked. She pushed the door open and fortunately, it wasn't.

Her eyes widened as she walked inside the CEO's office. For some reason, she perceived a familiar scent and couldn't figure out where she had perceived the scent before. However, this wasn't the time to be concerned about a trivial matter as that, even how exotic the office looked was trivial at this hour.

Her eyes met the CEO's desk and she hurriedly walked to it, taking a look at his opened system.

What was she thinking? Had her sense due to fear slowly disappeared when she damaged the camera?

How had she forgotten that she couldn't log in to his system if she had no idea what his password was.

But sometimes, luck was on her side, so she pressed a button to try her luck.

Goodness, it wasn't locked. But why?

After a while of checking throughly, the screen swiftly showed a black screen and beneath was the footage of herself in her office in small squares arranged horizontally at the bottom of the screem.

Exactly knowing what to do and in a few minutes, she clicked on the keyboard and swiftly wiped off the entire footage of herself in her office.

Meanwhile, Saverio and Leon had barely reached the fourteenth floor before Saverio recalled that there was something he forgot to bring along.

Knowing who Mr Jones was, and after the news that they had listened to earlier, then, there was no doubt that this man had either come to cause more terror or give threats.

Saverio knew he would have to survive a noise outbreak if he didn't go to his office to take whatever he was supposed to. If Mr Jones was going to act rashly, then it was better that he was ready for it.

When they reached the tenth floor, the lift stopped and they walked outside to the floor where the business meeting was scheduled.

"Wait, Leon. I need to get something from my office."

"What? I should do that instead, boss. Are you still holding a grudge against me?"

Saverio waved his hand saying, "No. I mean, yes, of course, you are the one to be blamed but that is not the reason I would love to go to the office myself. Start the meeting with him and his subordinates and tell them I will join them in five minutes. And if he acts funny, alert me once."

"I am sorry boss if you don't wish to see him, however, knowing who he is, we couldn't just pretend to be deaf to his threats or something worse could happen. We know Mr Jones does not abide by the laws and never for once had he been caught."

"I know right."

"But boss, you also shouldn't act rashly. I can see the dread in your eyes. It looks like you are planning something different... something I am not aware of," Leon said again, looking at his boss's stiff stance.

Saverio smiled before nodding his head, "Be rest assured everything is going to be fine. And don't think I would do anything to lengthen your stay here. You have done your best and I appreciate it."

Leon plainly nodded as he watched his boss head to the lift.

Saverio entered the lift and after a while, he was at the topmost part of the building. He stiffly walked through the corridors and stopped when he got to the entrance of the new secretary's office. He wanted to enter her office but he dreaded the thought the next second and walked to his office instead.

However, Eva after being done with whatever she wanted to do decided to spare his exotic office a look but then she heard footsteps approaching.

"Goodness...looks like luck isn't on your side, Geneva!" Eva whispered to herself as her eyes looked thoroughly at his office, checking if there was any place to hide.

Just after she had slowly opened the door and entered the closet, the door opened abruptly and she peeked through the small space between the door and the wall next to it.

To her surprise, her eyes met the white-haired man that had saved her the other night from those kidnappers.

"He...he...he is the CEO?" Her eyes widened as they met the man hurriedly walking into the office and standing behind a desk.

After a while, he went to a cabinet attached to a wall and with a slight hesitation he brought out an object which Eva immediately knew what it was.

Eva had watched too many dramas and movies to not recognise the object.

It was a revolver!

Instinctively, her eyes widened and a gasp came out from her mouth when she heard a clicking sound from the gun.

Her heartbeats which had become a bit stable had started getting louder and faster. She held one of her hands to her chest and held her other hand at the door, to stop the door from closing or opening.

However, when he turned around, Eva made the stupid mistake to try push the door a little farther so that even though his eyes briefly went across the door, he wouldn't notice.

Regrettably, it made a slight noise.

Just when she was glad that he didn't hear the noise, she heard a stern voice, "Who is there?" and then footsteps approaching the door.

The part that shook her heart to the core was when he pointed his gun at the door where she stood behind even though he had no idea of who was behind. He said, "Come out if you don't wish for something worse than death." He waited for a few seconds and then let out a smirk, "How dare you walk into my office without my permission?"

However, just by staring at the gun pointed towards her, Eva recalled that even though she had deleted the footage, she couldn't have deleted it permanently. It could have been stored somewhere else where she had no access to.

Why wasn't she thinking?

No, she was dead either way!
