When Eva got to the dining room, she went straight to eating without offering to say anything. Ji Hyuk and her twin brothers were already at the seat eating their dish while Mrs Lee also sat down to join them, giving Eva a meaningful look of disapproval because she refused to greet the cop.
After they were done eating and exchanging goodbyes, Ji Hyuk entered his car while Eva entered from the other side.
When he started driving, everything became silent until Eva decided to break the silence, "Mr Hyuk, are you sure that this thing…" she pointed to her wristwatch and then her eyes dropped at him, "will only turn on when I click on it?"
Ji Hyuk didn't take a look at her but answered, "Yes."
Eva still wasn't satisfied. She appreciated his care but she didn't think she would be safe being tracked by someone she had no idea of. He was a cop but that didn't guarantee the fact that he was a good cop. "And that it won't track me when I don't click on it?"
"Certain, Ms Lee."
Eva nodded, her heart steadying as he took a turn and after a while, he stopped the car.
She walked out of the car but stopped when he called out to her.
"Ms Lee, what time should I pick you up?"
Eva looked at the tall and huge building behind her before taking a soft sigh and turning back to him, "If you don't get here before 8:05, I am going to take a cab home."
She didn't try to be demanding. She just didn't like the fact that this man was a great help to her. She just wanted him to disagree with that and say that he would be busy at work. Unfortunately, he replied, "You mean you would be done by 8:00?"
She nodded her head in agreement.
"Then I will be here before 8:00 pm. I don't want you to be delayed."
She blinked, not expecting his answer, "But...but...you might not..."
"Do not worry, Ms. Lee. Your safety is important."
Eva didn't know what to say, she just stared at him for a long while and then he said, "I will watch you go into the building now."
She straightened herself and then walked into the company, only then did he drive away.
When she entered the company, Eva couldn't help but ask herself multiple questions at a time. Not about the company yet but she was completely confused why he said her safety was of great import.
This meant her mother had told him about the kidnapping issue!
Jeez!
She started shaking and had no idea when she reached where a staff member was behind a desk.
"Madam, how may we help you?"
"I'm Geneva Lee," she replied. She kept wondering if her mother had told that man that she was raped. It couldn't be. She had told her not to!
But then, Eva recalled that she ought to bring out the letter of appointment and forward it to the woman but her brows furrowed when she heard the woman say,
"You must be our CEO's new secretary, ma'am."
"Yes, I am," she replied not expecting that they were even going to answer her abruptly without even saying her reason for being here or without taking a look at her letter of appointment. Then this fortunately wasn't a prank.
The staff member pointed at the waiting section where there were chairs arranged horizontally. "Please wait patiently while I call a member to direct you to your office."
Eva nodded, fiddling with her bag's handle as she walked over to where she was told to sit. After a while, a woman walked to her, "Geneva Lee, right?"
She nodded.
"I am here to take you to your office."
Eva nodded yet again as she stood up. They walked out of the room and passed several hallways, different from where she had passed the other time she had come here for an interview.
Finally, they got to a lift, the staff member brought out a card and then swiped it at the RFID card reader before they both entered, swiftly. The staff member then clicked on two numbers which Eva saw to be 42.
She sighed, waiting patiently as the lift went higher and then stopped a few times to occupy a few others who left them in a short while. And finally, it stopped, showing that she had arrived at her destination. Before they could exit the lift again, the staff member swiped her card into the card reader.
"This is the last floor, ma'am," she said, allowing Eva to walk out first.
"I see," she uttered slowly, already tired. Though the building was a skyscraper, Eva didn't think she would be able to survive going down and up from the lift every time she needed to get something
What was she saying? Wasn't she lucky to be employed in a company as big as this?
After a while, they stopped in an office and the door was opened.
Eva walked in behind the woman who stretched her hand, "Ma'am, this is your reserved office. The outgoing secretary shall meet you soon to discuss with you further. If you have any problem, kindly give me a call," she handed her a small card, "and I will get to you as soon as possible."
She received the card though none of the words the woman had said earlier went into her earlobes. Instead, she was stunned at the office that they had just walked into.
Before she was a room reflecting a cosmopolitan elegance befitting a CEO of a very large company. The ones she saw in movies and dramas.
Her brows furrowed up, she didn't fight the urge to ask, "Ma'am, I think you are mistaken. This is definitely a CEO's office, or a president or any other executive's?"
The woman with short brown hair and a moderate amount of red lipstick laughed softly while shaking her head, "Of course, no. Well, this office has been vacant and was just opened and provided with every facility you need as the CEO's new secretary. I agree it is quite elegant but your position is quite a task so you deserve a good environment."
She was kind, noted Eva. But then, at the same time, Eva wondered why the emphasis on how heavy her task was had to be told to her. So she questioned, "May I know your name, ma'am?"
"Call me, Maryam, Ms. Lee."
"Eva in short," Eva stated, giving her a little smile before her face turned serious, "But can I ask if any previous secretaries ever complained about this task?"
Maryam laughed, quite stunned that the new secretary was asking such a question but then, liking her personality, she only hesitated a little, "Well, Ms Lee-"
"Eva."
"Eva, well, the CEO is quite a handful to handle. As a secretary and according to what I have heard, you are serving as a caretaker. Mr Saverio's caretaker."
