Chapter 3 - Guardian

My new what now?

I continue to stare at him, not knowing what to do or say at this point. Did my dad hire him? But when did he start caring about my well-being? And how did he appear from thin air like that? Is that a new trick people learned to do?

The thoughts running through my head made it ache a bit. He noticed my confusion and smiled jokingly, putting a hand on my head and petting it. "Don't worry, you'll get used to it."

"I don't need a guardian," I say firmly, turning my head away from him and folding my arms tight.

"Oh really?" He said folding his arms to mimic me. "Why did you feel the need to throw yourself off a bridge if you didn't need any type of help then?".

I looked at him again, wide-eyed. I really did not want to remember yesterday. It was probably the worst day I've ever had to go through. I was yelled at by my stepmother. This time, the argument was intense, and heated.

We were arguing about something so stupid, I don't even remember what it was. I was so blinded by rage and hatred, my eyes could only see red. At some point in our argument, she mentioned something, someone, my mother.

She knew my mother had a special place inside my heart. She died shortly after giving birth to me, there had been rumors about my parents really wanting to conceive a boy, only to have me instead. Which made my father furious, and explains why he and my stepmother don't care about me and neglect me.

I frown slightly, looking down at my feet avoiding his gaze. "Sorry, I shouldn't have mentioned that..." He said, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly. "It's okay..."

It's weird... This whole encounter is weird. I never imagined a day where I'd be standing in my room with a demon, talking about me attempting to kill myself, but here we are.

I couldn't help but stare at him. His Chestnut colored hair, his bright skin, and his horns were placed perfectly on his head.

Suddenly, the awkward tension is gone, when he stands straight again, holds my wrist, and looks me dead in the eyes.

I shiver slightly, I'm not used to being touched. "I will follow you around and protect you at all costs. No ifs buts or ands. You're not getting rid of me Hanako!" He says confidently.

How does he know my name? I stare at him, cringing at his words. "Ok? I mean... I don't really mind." I say, not really caring about the situation, even though I probably should.

He smiles brightly and takes my hand in his. "Great! That makes things a lot easier for me."

As soon as he spoke those words, he disappeared into thin air. Things were back to the way they were.

I stared ahead, in absolute shock, rubbing my eyes to make sure I'm awake and not dreaming this, is this a sign of schizophrenia? Am I sick? Should I see a doctor?

My head was aching even more now. It was probably trying to comprehend the situation I somehow got myself in.

'I now have a guardian, who's also a demon from hell... Probably' I say as I sat on my desk rubbing my head in confusion.

Although this situation made no sense, the thought of having a guard isn't really a bad one. My loneliness is starting to affect other aspects of my life, perhaps the idea of having this guy by my side isn't really a bad one.

It was nighttime by now, my room dark, eliminated only by my dim desk lamp. I wondered about tomorrow, and I somehow felt optimistic for the days to come.

The next day at school, I stood in front of the gates, and students pushed past me trying to get to their classes on time. I frowned, so much for following me around huh? I held the straps of my backpack, took a deep breath, and walked in slowly.

As I walked down the hall to my classroom, I could hear faint chats and whispers around me. I should be used to this by now, but it still makes me feel quite uncomfortable.

I couldn't help but look for a pair of black horns sticking out the crowd as I walked for some odd reason. Is he really going to follow me around everywhere?

I walked into my classroom and took a seat at my usual spot, at the back of the classroom.

A few minutes later, class started and all students took their seats as the teacher walked in.

My eyes widened as another person walked behind him, Ryu? He looked different than yesterday, his black pointy horns were gone, and so were his wings, and I could have sworn that his ears were more pointy than they are right now.

He looked... Like a normal human being, except his shiny red eyes remained. I could hear some girls gasping and gossiping in the background. Words like, pretty, handsome, and hot were thrown around the classroom as people talked amongst themselves.

After a long awkward pause, the teacher finally spoke "Good morning class, as you can probably already tell, we have a new student who will join us." He paused and looked at Ryu "Could you please introduce yourself to the class?" He asked.

Our eyes met suddenly, he looked at me and grinned. I was in complete shock, so many questions roamed in my head I couldn't even hear half of his unnecessarily long introduction.

I started panicking when the teacher motioned for him to sit, next to me! Everyone clapped for him as he pridefully walked towards me, taking a seat.

I looked at him and said eyes still wide open "How are you human? How did you even know where I study? And-"

He looked at me, placing his elbow on the table and resting his head on his palm. He interrupts me "That's not important right now" He smiled.

That smile made me feel something I've never felt before, I can't quite wrap my head around the feeling. But I shrugged it off. I sighed, "Just, don't cause me any trouble, I'm dealing with enough already."

His smile widened "Don't worry, I'm not here for that." I somehow found it in me to smile back at him, I don't even remember the last time I smiled.

"Why is everyone staring at you?" I asked. He looked at our classmates, they all looked away as soon as they made eye contact with him and he chuckled quietly. "I guess they couldn't resist my natural beauty." He said, puffing his chest.

I sighed again, looking away and staring out the window. "Hey, are you going to ignore me?"

"Hey!" He repeated. I grinned to myself and turned around to face him again. "Yes, now pay attention," I replied teasingly.

"Hey, you two! Quite!" The teacher yelled at the both of us, putting one hand on his hip. "Sorry," I yelled back for him to hear me.

I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable at that moment, being the center of attention, everyone stared at me and Ryu. This is going to be a long day.
