"I want to see Holly. How is she?" Caylee asked."She's doing okay," Nolan said. "She's traumatized, but she didn't get hurt like you did.""Good, I'm glad."She was very careful about moving too fast because it still felt like there was a sledgehammer in her head. She also didn't want to show Nolan how much she was hurting. He was already taking her being injured badly. She reached out her hand, which he instantly took. Before she could say anything, the doctor came to her bedside."How are you doing this morning, Caylee?" the doctor asked."Better.""Let me check you over, and if you're doing well, I'll have the nurse give you some pain meds, and we'll move you up to a room.""How long do I have to be in the hospital, Doctor?" she asked."At the very least, two more days."She sighed. She was hoping to get out sooner, but she wasn't going to argue.Caylee saw Nolan stand off to the side and watch everything the doctor did."Well, young lady, you're doing well. If you keep healing at this rate, you might be able to get out of here tomorrow."She smiled. "That would be wonderful."She glanced at Nolan and saw that he didn't seem as thrilled as she was and wondered why.The next few hours were excruciating. She wouldn't have been able to deal with it if not for the pain medicine the doctor gave her. Once they got her situated in her private room, she felt someone cover her up as she went to sleep.Holly's whispers woke her up.Her eyes filled with tears as her friend came to her and carefully hugged her."God, Caylee. You scared the hell out of us," Holly said."Baby, watch the language."Holly grinned down at her. "Sorry, Daddy."Caylee bit her lip to keep from laughing when she caught the devilish look on her friend's face, and Jonah sighed. They only stayed a few more minutes and promised to be back the next day."Why don't you go home too, Nolan?""No, I'm not going to leave you, baby girl, so stop pushing it.""I'm perfectly safe with the two guards right outside the door."He walked over to her, bent, and pressed a kiss on her forehead. "I'm not leaving until you do." The tone of his voice told her to leave it alone.A nurse came in. "Hello, my name is Fiona, and I have some Jell-O for you if you're hungry.""Hi. I'm Caylee, and this is Nolan. I'd love some. I'll need to sit up a bit.""I can help with that," Fiona said.Fiona started to raise her bed and didn't go farther than a few inches. "We're not going to go too far."She handed her the cup of strawberry Jell-O. The first few bites went down well, but it didn't take long before she was full. She didn't want to push it and then vomit.Nolan set the cup off to the side and then helped her get a drink of water. She sighed when she sat back."Let's put you back down, baby girl. I want you to get more sleep.""Have you eaten?""I've grabbed a few sandwiches."She sighed and closed her eyes. He was acting so distant, and she hoped it was only because he was tired and worried, but she had the feeling it went deeper than that. When she awoke next, the morning sun shone through the window, and Nolan was leaning back in a chair with his head resting on the back, his legs out, and his hands on his stomach. It looked extremely uncomfortable. She hoped they'd be able to go home so they could be in their bed and eat food they enjoyed.Nolan was starting to look worse than she thought she might. He roused when the door opened, and Jonah and Holly came through with cups and sacks. She heard Nolan moan when he sat up and then stretched."Hey, we brought some breakfast sandwiches for you guys and the guards in the hallway.""Thank you. I really need the coffee."Jonah handed him a cup and then opened up a tall glass of orange juice before he sat her up a bit. "Is this okay?""Yes.""Good. The vitamins will do you good."He helped hold the glass until she was steady. The first sip was tart and cold, but the next few tasted sweet and felt good sliding down her throat. She was shocked when she finished the glass. She was full, but it gave her energy and made her head feel better.A nurse came in, checked her vitals, and gave her more pain medicine. By the time the doctor arrived, she was smiling at something Holly was saying.
