Chapter 1 - Ground Zero

Nero City, a place or what would have been after what Ground Zero did 50 years later… A normal metropolitan city in the center of the Euro-Asian Federation. Known for its well established nature and general modern take on an ideal city.

The city was the first one to be established after the unification of the nations into a single unit. Despite the modern and technological advancements of the Federation, the people haven't forgotten where they were known for…

Magic is an interesting source of power. It is known that most citizens within the Federation have at least a lineage that has a connection to a pool of magic of their respective families. Except for one girl…

Somewhere in the Federation's Magic, Technology Research and Development (MATR)...

"How's the simulation going?" Asked one of the scientists.

The sound of machines ticking by as simulations gets processed.

"Doing well. As a matter of fact it is doing exceptionally well," replied one of the scientists doing the simulation.

What they are working on is to learn more and deeper about magic as a whole as it's been a long time since magic got into the spotlight after advancements in technology made it obsolete after the turn of the millennia…

"What are these readings we're getting!?" Questioned one of the head scientists in the department.

"We may or may not have a magical revolution on our hands, everyone." Observed by one of the department scientists.

"What do you think, professor?" Asked one of the members from the department.

"Are you serious that the person responsible for the world's destruction is a highschool girl?!" Expressed frustration by a Scientist.

Footsteps of researchers going around printing results and the clack of keyboards as they record down the data they've collected.

"I'm afraid that is what we have found out about this matter," handing the results to the professor.

The sound of paperwork being passed around to everyone in the room and the sound of surprise and confusion fills the room.

"Call the Intelligence Division," called out by a professor as he reads the document.

Meanwhile somewhere in an apartment complex…

"Ugh… It's already morning," I groaned while I reached for my loud alarm on my bedside table.

My name is Beatrix Miller and I'll be joining The Ranks of high school this year! Or so I hope so to be honest. I still have yet to check my class section too and I hope I'm not on the bottom list. God I hope so…

Well, I still have a lot of time left to do before school. I looked at the clock and it seemed like I was 4 hours early. Time for a jog then!

I grabbed everything I needed and wore my tracksuit to fit the bill and went on a small circuit around the outskirts of my street. Beginning from my apartment complex towards the park then back then the market then back to the park. It's a 30 minute jog at a decent pace.

After this I stopped by the park to grab something to drink from the vending machine and took a seat on a nearby bench. When a woman in black sat down next to me…

"So what is it this time?" I asked after I finished drinking.

"Well, Bea I didn't expect that you're really becoming a student." The woman in black tears up.

"You do know I can't stay with you right? Agent Exia, plus I need normal friends too you know." I rant for a bit.

"As your superior and your adoptive mother I have to take in that my girl is finally joining society.." As Exia expresses her happiness for a bit then turns serious after that.

"So what do you have for me today?" Changing topics quickly as Exia hands me an envelope.

"Everything you need to know about the mission is in that envelope as usual. I want you to enjoy your time as a student. And as your mother as well I want you to do your best at school." Exia implying her parenting skills.

"Alright, alright I'll be going. I have my first day today." I stood up and threw away the bottle of water.

"Keep in touch if you have any questions or concerns. Let this mission be a loose one but don't get too loose or you'll forget your mission. Remember that, ok? See you around then." She disappears into the crowd of people waving her goodbye.

After that I stood up and headed back to my apartment with 3 hours to spare. Once in my room I began reading into the documents while doing my morning routine for school. Eating breakfast while reading the blurbs in the document.

Seems like this is gonna be a long–term mission. I have to be aware that I have to get close to the target and become friends with her to get a hold of her safety to prevent anything from happening to her.

Giving an appearance that my profile is an average student with a special talent for track and field. So I have to fit in as an athlete, that's good I don't need to explain why I'm overly capable. I just need to take on the act.

As I prepare my lunch for later while checking the clock… All on schedule, going to school at the exact time I'll be arriving. The fate of the entire world is on my shoulders and with a bit of strings pulled by my superiors I expect that she'll be in my class.

After a few minutes of walking to school seeing all of the students arriving on time looking at the bulletin board to check where they are in the section. And there I found her name. Elizabeth Davis nicknamed Ground Zero.

We went to the auditorium for the school opening as every student sat down to listen to the principal's introduction and speech for his year of freshman's which included me of course.

"Hey, you look serious about this." A girl right next to me chirped on my side.

"Well, this is the next level of our life right?" I replied.

"What class are you in?" Asked the girl next to me.

"Class 1-3, you?" I answered back.

"Hey, I'm in the same class! My name is Mia, what's yours?" Mia happily replied

"Name's Beatrix, we're gonna be classmates, huh. Pleasure to be acquainted with you." I shake hands with Mia while we're listening to the principal's speech.

There was a peculiar line the principal mentioned… Seems like my ears ain't lying on the student who's gonna be giving the final speech.

"To end my speech this morning I would like to call upon our highest scoring student who passed the entrance examination with flying colors to give a short speech. Miss Elizabeth Davis." As the principal calls out Elizabeth from the front seat.

There she is… Ground Zero, that's her right there. She does look like a typical normal prodigy to me. I can't see why she's the one who has the capability of ending the world.

Her looks are pretty outstanding for her.

"I would like to thank the opportunity of giving a short speech from our principal…" Elizabeth went on and spoke out her inspirational speech that left everyone applauding.

Finishing the school opening assembly, Me and Mia went to class.

"Wow, she's surprisingly easy to understand." Mia remarking on Elizabeth's speech.

"What do you mean by easy to understand?" I asked.

"Well for one she wasn't speaking in a deep vocabulary like I expect of prodigies. And two she's quite simple in her speech if I'm honest." Mia criticized the speech.

"Where did you expect that from a person, Mia?" I questioned her criticism.

"Television." Mia smirked.

"Figured, it is pretty stereotypical the way you see about prodigies." I replied.

While we're walking around the corner we hear a lot of noise coming from our classroom and what do you know… And as planned she's here. Everyone in the class is already surrounding her.

"Hey, it seems like we're gonna be classmates with her." Mia pointed out the obvious.

"And you're not surprised about that?" I replied with a bit of skepticism.

After a few minutes in our homeroom, the teacher arrived and placed us in our respective seats. Mia is right next to me, and to no one's surprise, Elizabeth is placed right in front of me.

Though this feels too real for it to be a coincidence really. But then again I'm the only one who knows what's really going on behind all of this. After all I have to play the part to keep this world from going under.

I don't have the clearance to know why this girl, specifically, is the one who is a threat to humanity and if she really is a threat why not just remove her from the face of the world?

Then again they probably want her to be on our side at the end of the day. That's important. And with that my school life begins here to protect this lady at all cost.
