Chapter 42 - CHAPTER 42

Vittorio Amorielle confidently walked down the hallway of the mansion. As he opened the door to the office, he came face to face with his uncle, sitting at his desk, on the phone. Their gazes met, and a brief moment of tension filled the air. Matteo placed the phone back in its place as his nephew approached.

"Ah, Uncle Matteo, always taking my place. You never miss an opportunity, do you? I hope you're not too attached to it," commented Vittorio with a slight smile.

Matteo quickly stood up, a look of nervousness crossing his eyes.

"Vittorio! My nephew, what a surprise! Please, have a seat," said Matteo. "I'm sorry for occupying your place, I thought you would rest after the trip."

Vittorio smiled deceptively and took his seat, closely observing his uncle.

"A Capo di tutti capi never rests," commented Vittorio as he sat in the boss's chair. "Don't worry, uncle. I understand that old habits are hard to abandon."

Vittorio's eyes sparkled with a mix of determination and cunning as he began to discuss mafia matters.

"You know, Tommaso Grecco has caught my attention lately. It seems he's been working on our family's business in New York. And I believe he's causing serious trouble here as well."

Matteo tried to remain calm, but his eyes betrayed a mix of surprise and unease.

"Ah, Tommaso... He's just a minor annoyance. Rest assured, I'm handling him appropriately," replied Matteo visibly uncomfortable.

"Is that so?" questioned Vittorio, feigning innocence. "Explain to me, uncle, how are you dealing with our rival?"

"Well..." began Matteo, avoiding eye contact with Vittorio. "I managed to close some common deals, that's all. But nothing that affects my loyalty to the family, my dear nephew."

"I hope so," commented Vittorio with a subtle smile. "In any case, I have taken steps to ensure that Tommaso Grecco is removed from the shareholder position at Wild Holdings Bank, which, by the way, is now under my control."

"That's... excellent news, Vittorio," said Matteo, surprised. "I'm sure you're making the best decisions for the good of the family. By the way, starting with the beautiful wife you chose."

"Ellis has been a great companion on this journey, uncle," affirmed Vittorio with a sparkle in his eyes. "I'm very lucky to have her by my side."

"Certainly, Vittorio. Your wife is a charming woman. I hope you both find happiness together," agreed Matteo with a forced smile.

"Thank you, uncle. Ellis means a lot to me," said Vittorio in a soft tone. He then stared at his uncle, seriously. "However, she couldn't even distract me from the search for the truth, uncle."

"What truth, nephew?" asked Matteo, raising an eyebrow.

"The truth about my father's death. I have reasons to believe that there are more people involved... people very close..." Vittorio reinforced, staring at his uncle.

Matteo's gaze hardened for a brief moment, but he quickly regained composure.

"Vittorio, you have always been an impulsive young man with wild theories. Your father was my brother, I would never do anything to harm him if that's what you're implying. But if you want the truth, I'm willing to help you uncover it. After all, we're family."

Vittorio pretended innocence, hiding his knowledge of Matteo's possible connection

to Tommaso and his father's death.

"I wasn't implying anything, but I hope it's true, uncle. My mission remains to find justice for my father and peace for my family. I won't rest until the whole truth is revealed," affirmed Vittorio. "And when I find out, I won't hesitate to seek revenge."

Vittorio and Matteo locked eyes for a brief moment, with palpable tension filling the room.

"Vittorio, my boy, you must abandon these things. Focus on your honeymoon here in Pedesina. There will be a dinner tonight, my children should be arriving soon. They're eager to see you. It's a perfect opportunity to have fun and reconnect with the family."

Vittorio suspected his uncle's words but decided to leave the conversation there, at least for now.

"Very well, Uncle Matteo, I'll follow your advice and enjoy my stay here in Pedesina. But don't worry, one day I will find the answers I seek."

"Very well. Now, Vittorio, I need to get ready for dinner," said Matteo, changing the subject. "I'm sure your aunt will come through that door and give us a proper sermon on how to be a good host."

"You're dismissed, uncle," informed Vittorio. "I'll stay a little longer, I have some matters to attend to."

"Leave that for later, my nephew. Have fun and forget about these matters that only sadden our family."

The two men locked eyes once more before Matteo stood up and headed for the door.

"We'll see, Uncle Matteo. We'll see," Vittorio uttered mysteriously.

Matteo left the office, being observed by Vittorio, who remained determined to uncover the truth.
