The Vampire Diaries
Season 3: Episode 2
The Hybrid
Everyone was quiet when the screen went dark. Hearing Åse's comment about family struck a chord in pretty much everybody.
No one had decided to speak up so after a minute of silence the screen lit up once more.
The next scene to be shown was the Smoky Mountains as Klaus, Åse, and Stefan, with a dead Ray on his back, were hiking through the trees.
The first thing everyone hears is Klaus taunting Stefan. "You ok? Is Ray getting heavy?" Stefan just keeps looking forward and walking as he says, "I'm fine." Åse, giving him a once over, decides to ask, "You sure about that?" Stefan doesn't answer her which she just rolls her eyes at. Klaus knowing his wife was annoyed moves closer to her and puts an arm around her shoulders. Feeling slightly more comfortable Åse closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. When she felt better she opened her eyes and looked up at Klaus and just gave a small nod to say she was okay.
Now that Klaus had his priority taken care of he kept taunting Stefan. "You know, we've been walking for quite some time now. If you need some water or a little sit-down..." Åse laughed quietly to herself as she looked between the two men she was with. Stefan glanced at her quickly before deciding to ignore her and respond to Klaus. "You now, I get that we're uh—we're stuck together, but if we could maybe just skip the chitchat, it'd be great." This time Åse scoffed before she spoke. "So much brooding. Don't you think, my love?" Klaus nods as he says, "She's right, Stefan. Your self-loathing is suffocating you, my friend." Stefan still keeps his gaze forward as they're all talking. "Maybe it's 'cause I'm a little tired of hunting werewolves. We've been at it all summer." Klaus focuses his gaze forward as he says, "Thanks to our pal Ray, we found ourselves a pack."
Klaus stops before continuing to walk forward though to look at his wife. As he takes his arm away from her shoulders she turns her body towards him. Stefan is stood by watching as the two of them once again look each other in the eyes saying nothing. After around 10 seconds Åse goes to walk away but is suddenly pulled back. Klaus pulls her close to him with one hand while holding the left side of her face with the other. With his thumb brushing just below her cheekbone Klaus pulls Åse into a deep kiss. The two stay like that for a good five seconds before breaking away. Åse smirks as she starts to walk away, but Klaus, hearing something that nobody else could, slaps her ass before turning back towards Stefan and pointing forward.
The Mystic Falls side of the room looked uncomfortable at this display of affection. Åse looks over at them and smirks to herself before making a decision. She scoots forward in her seat which alerts the rest of the Originals. They all look at her with questioning faces as they see the look she has. Klaus, knowing his wife was planning something, decided to ask. "What is your devilish mind cooking up now, my love?" Åse doesn't say anything as she laughs to herself. The noise being made by the two Originals alerted the Scooby Gang and had them all looking over at that side of the room. Åse, noticing she has their attention, leans over Klaus slightly as she starts talking.
"You know... if that made you uncomfortable it could get a lot worse." Seeing some of the confused faces she smirks once again. As she starts speaking Åse decides to take this all a step further and she moves so that she is straddling her husband. "If this whole watching thing is as in-depth as I'm thinking," At this point Åse had started running her hands over Klaus' abdomen, and Klaus, realizing what his wife was doing, took hold of Åse's hips in a tight grip. "Then you all are in for a real treat if I do say so myself." Åse had now leaned her head down and started kissing a trail down Klaus's neck. Out of the corner of her eye she saw that the Mystic Falls residents had a hard time listening to her. So she decided on one more thing to seal the nail in the uncomfortable coffin that the Scooby Gang now resides in. Åse started speaking but she was also starting to slowly grind on Klaus. "Because some people here," Klaus had moved his head so that his face was in the crook of Åse's neck as she kept slowly grinding on him. "Aren't afraid to show how much they love each other. Even if it happens to be around other people or in public." By this point Åse was speaking somewhat breathlessly. She had also read some of their minds and wasn't surprised to find a few death threats in there. So, to put them all on edge just a little bit more she added on, "And they definitely aren't going to listen to your sorry excuse for threats to stop."
Åse had now come to a stop on top of Klaus. She took a quick glance at the faces from Mystic Falls and felt accomplished with how out of sorts they all looked. She even took a look behind her to see what the other Originals looked like after her little display. Elijah and Finn just looked done with everything around them, Rebekah sat there with an eyebrow raised looking slightly amused, and then there was Kol. Kol looked like he was about two seconds away from cracking several ribs with how hard he was holding in his laughter. With one look in each other's direction the both of them let the dam burst. Laughter spilled from the both of them for around five minutes before they both sobered up and wiped any remaining tears that gathered away. Neither one looking in the direction of the other because they knew that if they did the whole process would repeat itself.
Klaus pat Åse's thigh to get her attention. Once she was turned his way she held a small smile on her face. She knew what she had done got him riled up so she had to placate him for the time being. Through their mind link she said, "I already know, Nik. And I promise that everything will be taken care of." With an accepting nod from Klaus, Åse gave him a final kiss on the lips before moving back to her original seat.
With everyone quiet the screen turned back on.
The scene shows a group of people, now known as werewolves, setting up a campsite. Stefan starts to walk to the middle of camp while Klaus stays behind. Everyone in the camp looks up from what they were doing as Stefan walks up with Ray still on his back. While making eye contact with all of the other people Stefan dumps Ray's body onto the ground. One girl in particular recognized the dead man and runs up to him saying, "Ray! Oh, my god." As she crouches beside him. Another man comes up beside her as she looks up to Stefan and asks, "What's going on?" When Stefan doesn't answer she speaks in a more hostile tone, "Who are you?" Klaus then decides this is his time to make an entrance. He walks out from behind some trees as he speaks up. "The important question is who are we?"
Everyone in camp starts to look around confused and scared because they didn't know who the man was talking about. Klaus, reveling in their fear, lets out a shrill whistle that makes everyone, even Stefan, jump in surprise. The next thing anyone hears is a rustling in the trees above before a loud thump on the ground is heard on the opposite side of the camp. All of the wolves turn to see Åse standing there looking over everybody like a predator searching for their next meal. Sensing the confusion Klaus directs their attention back to him. "Please forgive the intrusion. My name is Klaus." All of the wolves are instantly more defensive and alert. One of the members of the pack then realized who the new woman was. He turned to her with a scared expression on his face and said, "That means that you're—" "Gravedigger. Pleasure." Åse spoke eerily calm but if you looked at her for too long you would notice that she was ready at any moment to prove how she got her deadly title.
The room was quiet for the most part. The Mystic Falls residents all looked at each other with concerned or scared expressions. They didn't want Stefan to end up with the two Originals. The only one on their side that actually looked anything but scared was Stefan himself. The vampire was sat there with a neutral look on his face. He didn't know what to think. On one hand, he didn't want to become the Ripper again because of all the bloodshed it caused, but on the other he felt this push in his mind that was telling him to just let go and be himself. Unfortunately though, it was like there was a wall that wouldn't allow it to happen.
The girl that was crouched in front of Ray stood up next to the man beside her. She looked scared as she addressed Klaus directly, "You're the Hybrid." Klaus looked pleased by the woman's statement. "You've heard of me. Fantastic." The screen goes dark for a couple seconds before lighting back up showing the woods after a small bit of time has passed.
Klaus and Stefan are causally sat on a fallen log while Åse can be seen circling the camp watching absolutely everything.
"It's fascinating, actually— a werewolf who isn't beholden to the moon, a vampire who doesn't burn in the sun." Klaus takes a second to smirk at everyone in camp. "A true hybrid." There is a tense silence throughout the camp, but it is soon disturbed by Ray abruptly gasping awake. "Excellent timing, Ray. Very dramatic." Ray looks over to Klaus as he is still gasping for breath. "What's happening to me?" Klaus takes this opportunity to call upon the younger vampire. "Stefan." The man nods slightly as he starts to get up from the log. "Are any of you human? Your friend here needs human blood to complete his transition to vampire." He looks around as he continues to talk. "If he doesn't get it, he will die."
At this point Åse can be seen in the background coming up behind a few of the pack members without them noticing.
Klaus speaks up from his spot on the log after a resounding silence. "Doesn't take much, just a sample." He takes another look around the campsite. This time he locks eyes with Åse as she steps right behind one "pack member" in particular. Klaus smirks and in return Åse winks at him. Getting up from the log Klaus keeps talking to the wolves knowing Åse will jump in at the right time. "Anyone? A boyfriend, a girlfriend along for the ride?" As Klaus makes eye contact with the man Åse is standing by she grabs his forearms, yanks them behind his back and whispers in his ear, "You."
There was no time for anyone to freak out because almost instantly Åse had made her way in front of the man, grabbed his left forearm and bit down harshly. She only stayed there a second or two before shoving the man towards Stefan who immediately had him pinned to the ground next to Ray. The woman who initially spoke to Klaus screamed out a "No!" As the woman tried to lunge forward Klaus grabbed her by the throat and kept her in place. From his spot on the ground Stefan spoke to Ray about the bleeding man he was holding down. "If you don't drink it, Ray, I will. Problem is I don't know how to stop." Klaus then spoke to the woman he was holding by the throat, "It's the new order, sweetheart. You join us, or you die." The woman fought hard against Klaus' hold on her, but it barely did a thing. "I'd rather die than be a vampire." Åse spoke up from behind her and Klaus let the woman turn around in her scared state. With a vampire face no one has seen before she says, "Wrong choice." Instantly the woman is met with Klaus' bitten arm in her mouth as she is force fed his blood and then a quickly broken neck. "She'll thank me for that later."
Klaus is seen licking some of the blood off his fingers as he looked at his wife. Åse smirks at him before speeding over to join him at his side. "Ok," he starts, and Åse finishes his thought, "Who's next?" The both of them flash their vampire face before the screen goes black.
The room was extremely quiet. The people of Mystic Falls had no idea what to think. Klaus and his wife were working to create more hybrids and they found the resources to do so. For them it seemed like the worst thing ever. What they seem to not realize though is that Klaus and Åse couldn't care less about them. The only reason they would be even somewhat tied to them is Stefan, but as far as their on-screen selves know Stefan is now loyal to the two Originals.
There was also something else that was bothering them. Åse's vampire face. Like any other vampire she had the veins underneath the eyes and fangs in her mouth, but what truly unnerved them all was her eyes. Åse's eyes went from her normal chocolate brown to blood red. That wasn't the worst part though. The whites of her eyes turned black and then her now red eyes started to glow. None of it was normal to the Scooby Gang and it freaked them out.
Stefan, having not spoken in a while, cleared his throat before turning to look at Åse. The woman herself had already been reading peoples minds so she knew what was coming. "Your vampire face isn't normal is it." His statement grabbed the attention of the entirety of the room. The Originals, bar Klaus, all looked to Åse to see how she would handle this conversation. Åse turned and responded to Stefan with a simple "No." This only encouraged the younger vampire further. "And back in the bar Klaus said that both you and him were a 'different kind of monster.'" Åse nodded her head in agreement. "So, with Klaus being a hybrid it would only make sense to say that you're one too." Everyone in the room except Åse and Stefan were tense after his statement. The people of Mystic Falls were wondering how powerful she might be and how the hell there was another hybrid. The Originals were still wondering how Åse would handle things. They know that she doesn't like to be out of control and in this situation she may just be.
Åse looked at Stefan for a few seconds, just long enough to make him uncomfortable, before she started to speak. "You've always been smarter than most haven't you, Stefan?" To say that people in the room were shocked at her response would be an understatement. The Originals were looking at her like she was crazy. She saw their expressions and raised an accusing brow as if to say 'are you questioning me?' Stefan, needing the confirmation, asked her, "Does that mean I'm right?" Åse just stared at him again for a few seconds with her head tilted slightly to the right. When she saw that he was about to open his mouth she beat him to it. "No, it doesn't." At all of the Mystic Falls residents dejected faces Åse starts to laugh. The noise was unsettlingly to those who hadn't seen her in her true element. "It doesn't really mean you're wrong though either." She spoke with a sly smirk as she looked Stefan directly in the eye. As she finished her sentence she made her eyes glow the same bright, blood red they had seen before. The sight made the other half of the room flinch back as she laughed at their reaction.
The screen lights back up showing Stefan dropping another semi-dead werewolf onto the ground. He turns around to face Klaus who was compelling the human of the camp after feeding him some of his blood to keep him alive. "There. Good as new. Now you relax, ok, mate? We're gonna need you when the rest of them wake up." As Klaus stands he looks over to Ray who is now sitting on the fallen log. Åse is standing in front of him basically staring holes into his head. Ray is shaking uncontrollably as he speaks, "They're dead. They're all dead." Klaus starts to walk over he he says, "Ah, he's through his transition. He should be feeling better soon." Stefan looks over at him questionably from his spot against a nearby tree. Åse moves to crouch in front of Ray not saying a word.
The three of them watch Ray in silence before Stefan breaks it. "So this is your master plan? Build an army of hybrid slaves?" At his questions Åse immediately stands up and speeds over to Stefan so that he's pinned to a tree. "I suggest you pick your next words very, very carefully." Klaus' eyes widen slightly at his wife but he doesn't move to stop her. Instead he takes a couple steps forward and says, "No, not slaves. Soldiers, comrades."
Klaus' answer seems to shock the other Originals. They all look at the screen with questioning faces wondering if their brother was speaking the truth or not.
Stefan goes to speak again but can't seeing as Åse still had him pinned to a tree by his throat. Seeing his struggle, Åse says, "Watch yourself, Salvatore." Before roughly letting the younger vampire go and walking back over to Ray. As Stefan recollects himself he watches Åse warily before he asks Klaus, "For what war, might I ask?" Klaus sees Åse tense up and goes to hold her shoulders as he answers Stefan. "Oh, you don't arm yourself after war has been declared, Stefan." Åse, having slightly calmed down, turned so she could see the younger vampire as she finished her husbands thought. "You build your army so big that no one ever dares to pick the fight." She finished her sentence with a wicked smirk that had Stefan unconsciously gulping in fear. The younger vampire looks between the two Originals as he asks, "What makes you so sure that they'll be loyal?" Åse just turns away and lets Klaus answer as she puts her focus back on the shaking Ray. "Well, it's not difficult to be loyal when you're on the winning team. That's something you'll learn one you shake that horribly depressive chip off your shoulder." Stefan seems to find this funny as he lets out a quiet laugh to himself. "That's why you two are— are keeping me around? To witness my attitude adjustment?" The answer to his question gets cut off as Åse lets out a whistle the immediately grabs Klaus' attention.
Åse stays crouched in front of Ray as she sees him start to bleed from his eyes and coughing up blood. Klaus comes up and sits next to Ray to try and see what's wrong with him. The two Originals share a concerned look as Åse grabs Ray's face to get a closer look. Absentmindedly, Klaus answers Stefan's earlier question, "You'll know why we're keeping you around when we've decided that we want you to know." Letting go of Ray's face Åse stands up and takes a step back while saying, "Something's wrong." Stefan makes his way to the side of Ray that Klaus isn't on as he takes his own look at the shaking werewolf. "That shouldn't be happening, should it?" Åse's head quickly turns to Stefan as she growls out, "Well, obviously."
Kol, seeing the look on Åse's face on screen, lets out a quiet laugh before he says, "Yeah, she's about three seconds away from killing you, mate." Stefan, looking slightly worried about his possible death, turns to Kol and asks, "How do you know?" This causes the rest of the Originals, except Finn, to laugh. Elijah composes himself first so he can answer for them. "Disregarding the fact that Klaus and Åse are married, she and Kol could be considered the closest out of all of us. Which, in turn, means that they know more about each other than the rest of us would." He waits a couple seconds for that information to sink in before he drops the bomb on the Mystic Falls gang. Elijah clears his throat to gather their attention once again. "He also knows how she acts when she gets this angry because the two of them went on dozens of killing sprees together over the years." The two being spoken about look to one another and smirk as if they were back in those times where they practically bathed in the blood of those that they killed.
To say that the Scooby Gang was shocked into silence would be an understatement.
The screen goes dark for a few seconds and then pops back on showing that a small bit of time has passed.
Ray is seen rocking back and forth looking far worse for the wear. The werewolf is staring at the ground as he shakily speaks up. "You said it was gonna feel better. Why doesn't it feel better?" Klaus and Åse are seen standing a few feet away, both with their arms crossed, both with confused yet angry looks on their faces. Stefan can be seen looking around camp almost smugly as he says, "Some master race."
Most of those that were in the theater laughed at Stefan. However, Åse and Klaus knew they wouldn't like how Stefan was acting. Frankly just watching it was already irritating enough. So, Åse turns to Stefan and says, "Yeah, Klaus and I aren't going to appreciate the attitude." Stefan could only nod his head and say, "I gathered that."
Both Klaus and Åse look up from Ray and say, "Lose the attitude." As the three are in a stare-down the female wolf that Klaus first fed his blood to gasps awake. This causes Klaus to look over at the compelled human and say, "Derek, come feed your girlfriend." Not five seconds later does Ray seem to turn rabid as he starts snarling before he completely runs off. Stefan look stunned as he turns back to Klaus and Åse who haven't moved from their spots. The Originals look unaffected as they see Stefan's stunned face. Åse tilts her her to the side as a smirk works its way onto her lips. She takes a few steps towards Stefan as she says, "Go get him." Stefan looks back and forth between Åse and Klaus. He quickly realizes that he can't get out of this situation and speeds off to go and try to find the now rabid Ray.
The next scene to be shown was Ray running through the forest. He stops all of a sudden and as he is standing there Stefan runs in and tackles him to the ground. Stefan has Ray pinned to the ground but out of nowhere the rabid hybrid sits up and bites down harshly on Stefan's forearm.
The exclamations of shock and denial are immediate from the Mystic Falls side of the room. Åse, being the antagonistic little shit that she is though, decides to have some fun. "Wow. So you agree to leave with Klaus to stop your brother from dying of a werewolf bite, but you get bitten in return. How ironic is that?" She looks around with a smirk on her face as she hears Klaus quietly laugh next to her and Kol laughing unabashedly from a few rows down.
On the Mystic Falls side of the room they were utterly shocked. She has seriously just joked about Stefan's death as if it meant nothing. What they didn't know, nor would they ever, was that Åse's care for life, little as it may have started out, has dwindled over time. By this point she only cared about Klaus and, even if she didn't show it most of the time, the other Originals.
For some reason Elena had decided to accuse Åse after she made this comment towards Stefan. "He just got bitten by a werewolf you sent him after. Does it seriously mean so little to you that you can laugh about it?" The laughter from the Originals side of the room immediately stopped. Åse shared a look with Klaus before staring directly into the doppelgängers eyes. She looked at her blankly before responding. "I don't think you understand the life of a vampire, so let me spell it out for you. We're apex predators. We feed on human blood to survive, and sometimes we kill those humans. So what? Life will go on no matter what happens. In the end death shouldn't mean anything to a vampire because in the world that we live in death happens everyday. So yes, doppelgänger, I will laugh about the possibility of Stefan dying. You want to know why? Because I. Don't. Care."
Åse turned away from the Mystic Falls side of the room after her speech. She was angered at this point and she didn't want to talk to anyone, so she looked straight ahead at the screen avoiding eye contact with everyone. After a few seconds she felt a hand grabbing hers and she knew exactly who it was. Klaus could always find a way to calm her down no matter the circumstances.
Now that no one was talking the screen turned back on.
Stefan is kneeled on the forest floor gasping in pain as he clutches his freshly bitten arm. As he is distracted by the pain Ray quickly gets up and speeds away. Stefan is about to go after him when he hears something that stops him in his tracks.
In the distance he hears his brother, Damon, talking to someone that should never be this close to Klaus and Åse. Elena. There are subtitles on the screen that show what they're saying. Damon asks, "How you doing?" Elena responds with a quick, "Fine." The screen switches to show Damon, Elena, and Alaric all hiking through the woods. Damon speaks up again as they keep walking. "You know, I could help you." Elena keeps moving forward as she says, "No, thanks." "Just one little fwoosh." "Yeah, with my luck, you'd drop me." Alaric decides to stop them before anything could escalate. "What are you guys, 12?" The screen switches again back to Stefan. He is at the top of a hill watching as the three people hike up the mountain.
He is startled when footsteps come up from behind him. When he turns around he is met with the unsuspecting faces of Klaus and Åse.
"You know, you won't be able to keep the secret that the doppelgänger is alive for very long." The sudden admission from Åse startled some of the people in the room. Caroline, being one that's more willing to talk, spoke up when it seemed no one else was going to. "I mean no offense when I say this, but how could you figure it out? I mean you were never around when the sacrifice stuff was happening, so basically all you know is that Klaus told you she was dead because he is the one that killed her." Åse looked over to the young vampire with a smirk that unnerved everyone on that side of the room. "I know I'll be able to figure it out in no time because Stefan is the type of person who gets overwhelmed when he has too many things on his plate. While he may be able to keep the secret for a small amount of time, he will never be able to withstand the pressure. I'm sure he will realize, that is if he hasn't already, that him knowing about the doppelgänger being alive amounts to the ultimate betrayal. And betrayal when it comes to me and Klaus is not something that we take lightly. So, as Stefan continues to hold this secret he will inevitably start to slip up, and I will be there to catch it."
Åse being so confident that she will catch Stefan in his lies made the Mystic Falls side of the room lose their own confidence in him. She just seemed so sure of herself.
Right before the screen started to play Åse decided to freak the Scooby Gang out some more. She turned to them with a smirk and said, "Also I was there the entire time you all were running around trying to figure out the sacrifice." With no time to comprehend what she had said the screen kept playing.
Klaus is the first to speak. "Where did he go?" Stefan started to try and walk past the others. He wanted to keep as far away from Damon, Alaric, and especially Elena, as possible. As he spoke to the Originals about Ray he sounded slightly panicked. "He, uh— he got away. Forget him. Let's go." Åse noticed the change in Stefan's speech as he tried to walk past them. She gave him a once over and zeroed in on his freshly bitten arm. Klaus had noticed the same thing, so just as Stefan stepped by them Klaus grabbed on to the same arm that was bitten. "A fatal werewolf bite. Ouch." Stefan sighs as he takes a look at his arm before looking back up to meet Klaus' eyes. "Yeah. I'm gonna need your blood to heal me." Åse steps up next to the two men after observing their exchange. "Well, I tell you what. You find Ray, and then he'll heal you." She gave the younger vampire a too sweet smile before she started to walk back to the campsite. Stefan scoffs as he watches her leave. Looking back to Klaus all he sees is that he is watching his wife. When they make eye contact Stefan notices that Klaus isn't going to object to his wife's suggestion. "Can't be serious." "You better hurry, 'cause that bite looks nasty." Then Klaus proceeds to follow after Åse.
The screen changes to show the campsite where Klaus had just returned. Åse was slowly pacing while watching all of her surroundings. The newly transitioning hybrids were spread out on the ground throughout the campsite. Klaus looks proud of what's happening as he makes his way to Åse's side. He puts an arm around her shoulder then kisses her temple. He takes a second to give his wife a once over and notices that her eyes are darting around the camp and he feels that her body has tensed up. Taking this into account he moves behind her and starts to massage her shoulders. "What's troubling you, my love?" Åse sighs as she releases some of her tension from her shoulders. In a whisper she says, "I can't help but feel like something is wrong." Klaus can be seen with furrowed brows as he keeps massaging his wife's shoulders. "What do you mean?" Åse turns around and holds the back of Klaus' neck with both of her hands. He immediately takes hold of her waist and then starts rubbing up and down her sides. "I mean, that as I keep watching these wolves I'm feeling more unsettled by the minute. I don't know the specific reason, but I just don't want you to get your hopes up too much if this doesn't work out." Åse moved her hands so that she now held Klaus' face. She rubbed her thumbs over his cheekbones as she spoke to him. "We have worked towards this moment for almost a thousand years. If, somehow, this doesn't work, I need you to know that no matter what we will figure it out. Just like we always do." Klaus lightly nodded his head at his wife's words. "Let's hope it doesn't come to that." "Of course." The two stared into each other's eyes before pulling themselves closer into a passion filled kiss. When they pulled away from each other they put their foreheads together and just stayed for a few seconds basking in each other's presence.
The scene changed showing the sun setting over the mountains. Damon, Alaric, and Elena can be seen still walking through the woods. Eventually, they here twigs snapping and become more alert. When they stop to observe their surroundings they see a stumbling Ray. Alaric has a small crossbow raised as he says, "Stay where you are." Ray looks all three of them over before zeroing in on Damon and quickly spatting out, "Vampire." The hybrid wastes no time in attacking Damon and pinning him by the throat on a nearby tree. Alaric, seeing his friend in trouble points his crossbow right at Ray and shoots him in the back. This only angers him more. Elena quickly takes off her backpack and grabs the wolfsbane grenade she had been given earlier. She throws it to Damon who, in turn, lets out explode right in the hybrids face. Ray lays in pain on the ground as Alaric speaks up. "Let me guess. Hybrid."
The next scene shows Alaric finish the ties on the rope he and Damon used to keep Ray tied to a tree. Damon speaks as he watches Ray's body. "These ropes aren't gonna hold him much longer. What else do we have?" Elena is seen dumping a liquid on another set of ropes. "Ric, here. Take these." Stupidly, Damon turns around and gets burned immediately as he grabs onto the ropes.
The entire room, except Damon, laughs or is amused at the vampires mistake, pain, or in some cases both.
"I said Ric." Alaric does take the ropes and binds Ray even more. "All right, that's the last of the vervain. We don't have enough stuff to hold him. I don't think we're gonna make that ridge before the full moon." As Elena tries to make a case about talking to Ray to get information, the hybrid himself wakes up. In the midst of waking up though he also starts to spontaneously shift into his wolf form. Damon, Alaric, and Elena quickly realize they need to leave the mountains and take off running back where they came from.
The scene changes to show that it is now fully nighttime. Klaus is standing in front of a campfire with the compelled human from the werewolf camp. With a hand on his shoulder he says, "Bad news, my friend. End of the road for you." He turns the human around and lets his hybrid eyes out before plunging his fangs deep in his neck and drinking any remaining blood from the mans body. Åse comes up to Klaus' side right as the mans body drops to the ground. She has a serious look on her face as Klaus turns to her with an eyebrow raised. "We have a problem." She motions to the camp around them and Klaus turns to see the now hybrids walking around camp as if they were zombies. One in particular, the woman who was initially concerned about Ray, stands across the fire from Klaus staring at him. Klaus sees this and addresses the woman. "Careful, love. There's only one alpha here." Slowly, the two Originals move themselves to the center of camp so they have a view of all of their surroundings. As their watching the hybrids Klaus quietly speaks to Åse. "Looks like your feeling was right, my love." Åse's face hasn't changed from when she first warned Klaus, but she does show her support by quickly reaching behind her and grabbing one of his hands to squeeze. "And like I said earlier, we will figure this out. We always do. I promise." Klaus nodded his head even though he knew that she couldn't see him. "Let's deal with this first." At that Åse's expression changed into something that could only be described as pure sadistic joy. Both of their faces were shown, specifically their eyes. Klaus' hybrid face on full display and Åse's blood red eyes illuminating the darkness. As soon as the first hybrid pounced all hell broke loose.
The scene changed once again showing Damon, Alaric, and Elena trying to run their way out of the woods.
"Oh come on! I wanted to see a massacre!" Kol spoke up from the Original's side of the room. His family looked at him in amusement while the Mystic Falls side couldn't believe what they just heard.
Elena trips and falls. Alaric and Damon turn back to help her up when suddenly Damon says, "Don't move." Not listening to his advice Elena only slows her movements as she looks up. Only to be met with a shifted werewolf. Damon taunts the werewolf before speeding off as a distraction. Elena finally gets up and Alaric is quick to tell her, "Come on. Let's keep moving." Out of sheer stupidity or just not listening she says, "We can't leave Damon." Alaric dismisses her immediately as he says, "He can handle himself. Let's move." Elena keeps insisting. "No. If he gets bit he'll be dead. I'm the reason he's out here." "I am the reason he's out here. I told him where we were, and I'm telling you to keep moving. Let's go." Seeing her hesitation he speaks almost harshly, "Elena, now."
The screen now shows Damon alone in the woods watching out for the werewolf. He hears a twig snap and he turns around to try and see what might be coming. Out of nowhere a now changed back Ray attacks Damon, shoving him to the ground. The two proceed to throw and dodge punches. Both of them harshly pushing the other to the ground before quickly making their way back onto their feet. Ray jumps high into their air, over Damon's head, trying to get behind him. Damon sees this and moves out of the way so their positions are only switched. Both vampire and hybrid charge at each other holding one another by the throat. As Ray looks like he's about to bite Damon he gets his heart ripped out. When Ray's body falls to the ground Damon looks up only to be face to face with his brother, Stefan.
Stefan, holding Ray's heart in his hand, takes a couple steps towards Damon. "Fancy meeting you here." "What part of 'Don't follow me anymore' got lost in translation, Damon?" Looking at the dead body on the ground Damon retorts, "Might wanna take that up with your girlfriend. You don't want her chasing you, I'd stop with the late-night phone calls." Stefan waits a couple seconds to respond to that. "I didn't call her." Damon just gives him a 'really?' look before saying, "Sure you did." There is a few seconds of silence before Damon speaks up again. "She's not gonna give up on you." "She has to. Because I'm never coming back." Stefan lets his statement sink in slightly before he says, "Why don't you get her home? See if you could keep her there this time." Damon just barely nods in agreement and the screen blacks out.
When it comes back on Stefan can be seen carrying Ray's dead body over his shoulders. He walks into the campsite only to see every wolf that used to be there dead. Slowly he makes his way further into the camp and he sees Klaus and Åse sitting on a log. Each of them with blood soaked hands and a faraway look in their eyes. Seeing Stefan they both look over at him as he drops Ray's body the the ground. Klaus speaks lowly as Stefan stands up. "They went rabid. Some of them, we killed. The others just... bled out." Stefan clutches his wolf bite as he looks around the massacred camp. Klaus stands up as he keeps talking. "In the end... they're all dead." In his hand he held a beer bottle, so taking out some of his anger he yells and throws the glass bottle at a tree. Stefan watches wearily as Klaus keeps screaming. "I did everything I was told!" He speaks regularly but still furious. "I should be able to turn them. I broke the curse. I killed a werewolf. I killed a vampire. I killed the doppelgänger." Neither of the men see this but Åse was not watching her husband during his outburst. She was watching Stefan.
Åse's laugh catches everyone off guard. "What's so funny, my love." Åse could only laugh again as she points to Klaus and Stefan. Finally, she is able to calm herself to where she can speak. "Both of you are too focused on your issues that you didn't notice me watching the whole thing." She quickly becomes serious as she says, "I have a full view of Stefan becoming tense as you spout off about not being able to create hybrids. It's my golden opportunity to catch him in his lie and neither of you know it." The Mystic Falls residents become extremely worried for Stefan after Åse's admission. The Originals, bar Klaus, can only sigh and shake their heads at the fact that their sister-in-law was laughing at this matter. Not that it truly surprised them though.
Åse's face is seen in a close up. She is intently focused on Stefan and for the briefest 0f moments her eyes flash red. Everything goes back to normal, but now Åse can be seen looking at Stefan with nothing but hate. However, her face changes quickly enough to show a smirk that could rival the devil himself. Quietly, so quiet that no one but herself could hear, Åse says, "The fallout will be glorious."
The room could only be left in shock. No one knew what she had meant. She looked around at everyone's confused faces and smirked. Åse knew exactly what her on-screen self meant, and she absolutely agreed.
As she tuned back in to the conversation at hand she heard her husband say, "You look like hell." Stefan nods before responding. "Last I checked, I'm dying... and you don't wanna heal me." Klaus looks away from Stefan's bite to Ray's dead body right next to the younger vampire. Stefan sees this and decides to explain himself. "I had to take him out. I didn't have a choice." Klaus looks back towards Stefan as he keeps listening. "I failed you. I'm sorry." Stefan walks up so that he is within striking distance of Klaus. "Do what you have to do."
There is outrage at Stefan's exclamation. His friends and brother gaped at both the on and off-screen Stefan.
Klaus watches Stefan without saying a word. After several seconds he says, "It should have worked." He then turns to the side and looks at Åse. Without speaking she nods at him and stands up with an empty beer bottle in her hand. She makes her way over to Klaus' side and hands him the bottle. A few more seconds of silence go by before Klaus bites into his hand and lets his blood flow into the bottle. He hands over his blood and says, "Bottoms up." As Stefan takes the bottle Klaus tells him, "We're leaving." He starts to walk off, Åse right by his side, before turning around to say one last thing. "It appears you're the only comrade I have left." The two Originals turn around and start walking away. Klaus with his arm around Åse's waist as she leans her head on his shoulder.
And the screen goes black.
