Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 - awoken from coma

[Six months later]

"Assistant Wang, have you prepared everything?"

"Yes Sir. The room has been renovated and the clothes have been arranged, when young Madam wakes up, we can rearrange everything to her liking."

"Mm." Chairman Jiang approved.

Assistant Wang let himself breath out a sigh of relief.

It had been six months. Six months of young madam's comatose state and there was still no sign of her waking up.

Chairman Jiang did not give up, however. Since her condition was unstable it had been harder to move her. However, three months ago when Doctor Lian gave him a go ahead, he had then made arrangements to transfer her to a better hospital closer to his residence.

This process was convenient for everyone looking after him. Although Chairman Jiang still looked no younger than fifty-five, he was an aging man of seventy years old who couldn't not go through too much stress.

For the last six months, ever since he encountered his granddaughter, although it was a relief to have finally found her, the situation she was in had taken toll on the old man.

He could not bear to witness her health deteriorating while he had just got her. He implored Doctor Lian to hire the best nurses and careers to watch over her 24/7 so that any minor change could not be missed.

After another three months of no change, he began to make arrangements to transfer her to his residence so that it'll be even more convenient to watch over her.

Just as he was about enter doctor Lian's office to suggest this idea, Doctor Lian sprinted from his office room and ran past them.

Both Assistant Wang and Chairman Jiang were left in a state of confusion.

...

In the hospital room, a beeping sound of an accelerated heartbeat in the ECG resounded the whole room.

A hand in the bed trembled and then all of a sudden Yan Yan who had been comatose in the hospital bed for past six months awakened.

The first thing she saw was an anxious stricken doctor checking her vitals.

"I—" her voice was croaked and chapped from not speaking after so long.

"Miss Yan, you're finally awake. How do you feel?"

"Um... who are you?"

"Miss Yan, pardon me, I'm Doctor Lian. Your grandfather appointed me as your primary doctor. He'll be very pleased to find out you awakened. Before that, can you tell me whether you're uncomfortable anywhere."

"Um... may I please have water."

"Of course."

Water soon landed in Yan Yan's mouth; she was helped in adjusting the bed to a sitting position before she was able to drink the water to her hearts content.

Her whole body felt heavy, her muscles were aching from being unused for so long.

"Thank you."

"My pleasure. Now tell me, how are you feeling?"

"I'm feeling achy. There's a slight headache but not too painful. Overall, I'm well."

"That's great. That's great to hear." Doctor Lian sighed in relief.

"But doctor, how did I end up here?"

Yan Yan was in state of confusion. Although she had so far spoken calmly to the doctor, inside she was not.

She could not remember anything. How she got here and why she was hospitalised. The last thing she remembered was her and Lou ZiYi saying goodbye to the children and faculty in the orphanage to start their new life.

After that it was as if a bright light had encased all her memories.

Did she get into an accident while in the road to her new apartment hence the hospitalisation?

"Miss Yan Yan, you were in an accident, your grandfather brought you here." Doctor Lian explained.

"An accident? My grandfather? But I don't remember any of it?"

Yan Yan frowned deeply.

Doctor Lian suddenly frowned. "What is the last memory?"

"I just remember saying goodbye to the children and carers in the orphanage. Me and ZiYi were on our way to the new apartment."

Doctor Lian shook his head. "Miss Yan you were in an accident and you've been comatose for 6 months, your grandfather has been so worried about you."

"Grandfather?" Yan Yan was perplexed, since when did she have a grandfather.

"He will be here to explain it all to you."

"But Miss Yan, just so you know, the year is two thousand and–"

"Why do you mean two thousand and—?!" She was shocked.

"I left orphanage yesterday, the day was March twelfth, two thousand an-! How could I skip two and half years?"

"You don't remember anything from the last to two years of life?" Doctor Lian asked in shock.

Doctor Lian had thought she couldn't remember her accident, so she lost two years of memory?

"Doctor, I don't—I don't understand, I was eighteen just yesterday, how am I now twenty years old?"

"Don't worry, don't stress over it too much. You must rest well and recover. Soon enough your memories will also recover."

Doctor Lian then did a final check of her vitals and soon had nurses to come to do a full physical body check.

Afterwards, he left her ward and stumbled upon Chairman Jiang and his assistant.

"What's all the fuss?! Did something happen to my granddaughter?" he asked.

"Chairman, Miss Yan Yan is awake."

"What?! She's finally awake? Move aside! Let me go see her!" Chairman Jiang's whole body seemed to fill with relief.

"Chairman there's something else." Doctor Jiang stopped him.

"What is it now? You always have bad news regarding her?!"

Chairman Jiang was restless. All he wanted to do right now was go inside and embrace his long-lost granddaughter.

"Chairman, it appears Miss Yan Yan has dissociative amnesia, it appears she doesn't remember anything that happened to her dating from two and half years ago."

"What?! How can this be?"

"Chairman, regarding telling her about her accident, I would advise to let her rest for now. Maybe her memories will come back on their own. But also, there's something to consider here. She was battered and bruised when she was first hospitalised and even lost a child. Such a traumatic event..."

Doctor Lian could only say up to this much. The rest was up to Chairman Jiang's decision.

Although as Doctor it really was not ideal to recommend this. However, as someone closely related to the patient, the state she was in back then was a matter of life or death. Even as Doctor he could not imagine enduring the pain of being operated on while still conscious.

To remember such a thing again was probably torture. If it was him, he would also rather forget it.

Maybe this was her mind's response to that trauma. Doctor Lian wondered and then he thought of that woman who always annoyed him. He will have to consult with her as she was an expert in this kind of field.
