Chapter 5 - Stars

Once we got up the stairs, we noticed the house was empty. I felt uneasy being in an empty house with a boy so I suggested we sat outside on the patio. I crossed my legs on the chair to warm myself up; I leaned back and looked at the stars.

Kristian leaned back in his chair and stared at them with me. We said nothing just fell into the sky's view. That was until it got broken by Madison and Karissa. We stood up walking back to Luke's car. Karissa stopped dead in her tracks as he mouthed another girl on the hood of his car.

Madison grabbed Kristian's shirt as he lunged forward "That doesn't help anyone." Karissa turned and ran back to one of the other girls. I crossed my arms, I couldn't believe that. Madison took off after Karissa and I stood awkwardly. I wasn't a comforting person and usually made it worse.

I don't know what overcame me but I walked up to Luke. I ripped him off the girl and as he turned I hit as hard as I could. The girl stood to her feet "What the hell?" I rubbed my fist and aimed another at her. Kristian pulled me away from them "Let me see your hand."

He gently opened it and rubbed it once I flinched. He frowned "You may have sprained it." I gulped "I don't know... Why. I don't know why I did that." He looked up at me and chuckled "I would have done it too. We fight but she's still my sister."

He attempted to open it again "We need to ice it." I licked my lips "I don't know what overcame me." He looked up at me again "Violet. You had a good reason. Don't feel guilty for it." He guided me to the beach house where we entered and got an ice pack. Madison approached "What happened?" I pressed my lips together nervously but as soon as I was going to speak. Kristian spoke, "She punched both of them."

Madison crossed her arms "Good. Karissa would love to hear that. Kristian, you found a good one." I raised my eyebrows this time, Kristian ignored the comment "But if I did it, it doesn't help." She shrugged one shoulder. "Violet is harmless compared to you. No offense babe."

She opened the freezer and pulled out a tub of ice cream "I'm surprised this is still here." She opened it "Nope. This is trash." She tossed it away "I'm going to walk to the gas station up the street. Don't take it too far if you know what I mean."

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I hated the jokes and comments like that. It made everything uncomfortable and difficult. Talking to him was a challenge after such a comment. She went back to the room and pulled Karissa out to go for a walk.

Kristian laughed after they left; I looked at him but stayed quiet. He placed the ice pack on my hand "You'll learn to ignore the comments." I cringed in pain "Ouch." He gently rubbed it with his thumb "I'm sorry." He gently put the ice pack down and held it on my hand "Meet anyone special since being here?"

I looked up at him with shock, he looked up with a chuckle "I'm just messing around." I let out my surprise with a small laugh "I don't like to get close so no." He looked at me again "What do you mean?" I exhaled "You get moved around a lot so relationships and friendships don't last."

He had a frown on his face "That isn't fair." I shook my head "No." I looked up and saw the clock, I panicked "Is that clock right?" He looked back and back pulling his phone out "Yeah." I reached for my phone frantically "I'm in a lot of trouble." I unlocked the phone to a single text from my foster mom "I hope you're having fun and making friends." It was sent 10 minutes ago.

I looked up surprised I wasn't being screamed at yet. I ended up calling her "Hey. Some drama happened so I'm going to be late..." She cut me off "It's a sleepover dork. Have fun and if you need anything else call me. I have to get back to work."

I hung up and looked at Kristian who was looking through the cupboards "That was a first." He turned back to me "What was?" I locked the phone "She wasn't mad." He grabbed a kit down and opened it on the island "Should she have?" I shrugged as he unrolled an elastic band "I don't know."

He started wrapping it around my hand "I told you she's different." He pinned the end and looked up smiling "All fixed up." I looked at it "Impressive." He put the first aid kit back "Our mom's a pediatrician. So she's always prepared." I looked at him confused "This is your mom's beach.." I paused as he nodded with a grin "Who did you think owned this?"

He leaned against the island "I don't think they'll be back for a while, by now everyone's left." My heart started to race; I wanted to avoid being left with him. I wanted to turn and walk back outside. He noticed my stress and panicked "We can go back outside."

I looked around the house and noticed a piano "Do you play?" He looked in the direction I did "Piano? A little." He walked over to it and sat opening it. I slowly moved my way to him and sat on the bench beside him. He started playing with ease, I chuckled "That's not a little."

He looked at me with a smile "I don't like to brag." I laughed as he took my good hand and showed me a few keys. He stopped and turned to me "If you don't mind me asking. Who taught you?" I looked down staring at the keys "My mom." I fought the tears back; I threw my head back to maintain myself "We would play every night up until..." I paused as he placed his hand on mine.

I wanted to let my walls down but I kept them up. I wanted to tell him everything. He spoke "When you're ready you can tell me. Don't feel that you have to." I don't know what overcame me but I started crying again. He gently pulled me closer to him "It's okay. It will get better."

I felt my tears soak his shirt where my cheek was; I sat up and wiped my tears. I started playing the piano. I played what my mom had taught me and he looked impressed. I put a smile on my face as he joined in. I looked up at him and he looked back.

I looked into his eyes while he looked into mine, I hadn't realized but we were leaning in. The front door swung open and we quickly pulled back. Our attention to Karissa stumbling through the kitchen "We got alcohol." Madison came in "Karissa." She turned and saw how close we were sitting and smirked "Our bad."

I slowly moved away from him, Kristian stood up "Knock that off." He grabbed Karissa and the bag of booze she had "We aren't doing this." He threw the bag out the door. Karissa reached for it but he was taller than her.

He led her into a room, Madison sat beside me "What did we miss?" I turned to her "Could you stop with the comments? It makes me uncomfortable." She nodded "Only if you tell me what's going on. You've been close all day."

I shrugged "It's all him. He's just.. concerned. I've cried twice since we've been here and he must think I'm some crybaby." She smirked "You care what he thinks? I see feelings growing." She stood up "Let's crash. Today has been too long and dramatic."

I followed her to another room and we crashed onto the beds. I had laid there staring at the glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling. It reminded me of the ones I had in my childhood home. A tear silently fell, I wished I meant something to someone again.
