The further they went, she noticed the fewer plants there were until finally, she stood watching a wide expanse of land with no trace of life, not even a single plant. The arid land stretched as far as she could see, and thanks to the bright moon above them, she could see almost everything, including the few headstones littered across the land.
Except for the absence of life, there was something about the place that both troubled her and comforted her. The air here felt abrasive in her nostrils, and she wondered if Lucien could feel it too. When she looked up at him, he seemed to be breathing just fine. Something was certainly wrong with this place; she could feel it, just as she could feel the presence of someone else there with them.
She scanned the place with her eyes, but she could not see anyone. Was it just her head playing tricks on her, she wondered?
"What is this place?" she asked, her forehead creased in concern.
