"Is that why you came all this way? To have dinner with me and my father?" she asked, arching her eyebrow in suspicion.
He sighed. "I just wanted to see you, Lev. Every time you leave me, something bad happens."
She pinched herself to stop the color from filling her face and betraying her. "You seem just fine to me," she said defiantly.
"Because I am with you now."
The sincere look in his eyes and the softness of his voice made her heart flutter.
"Don't send me away," he continued, reaching for her hand, and she did not resist him.
"And sincerely, I am famished."
She giggled as she moved away from the door.
They ate in silence, and the only sounds were the crackling of the fire from the fireplace and the clinking sound of fork against ceramic.
"How was the joust?" Augustus asked, breaking the silence. He pushed his plate away, dabbing his lips with a napkin.
