Chapter 3 - And It Haunts Again

I opened my eyes again. Staring at the book that I was reading, it was a magic book, fortunately I found something that can get me to the higher books on the shelf so I took the chance. A book that introduces magic to beginners.

It talks a lot about spells and stuff, something that I am totally an alien about. But if there was a spell that a baby can me do is [Observe], it's a simple spell that quite literally observes something. Just as long as you can see it you can get the details of the material.

Unfortunately this spell can be blocked by a spell called [Incognito] most people put this on themselves as protection as [Observe] can be quite dangerous. [Observe] can be used for a lot of things, one of them is on your ownself.

Elemental affinities. Similar to a fantasy novel, affinities are basically elements that you are much more powerful with. There are 4 basic elements, and just like the fantasy novel it's air, earth, water and the last, fire.

But there's also two other elements that are special in their own way. Dark and Light. light is basically fire but upgraded, extremely upgraded, and dark isn't exactly dark, but the dark element is just an element that isn't on the 4 elements.

Unlike the other 4 elements, you can only use this element when you have an affinity for it. Take for an example, you have the element affinities of earth and air, earth and air are your affinities meaning that these two are your most potent with, but you can just fire and water although they are much more inferior.

Of course people with no affinities do exist, but that doesn't mean they are weak, because of that they are balanced in all elements. But they still can't use dark and light.

One of my element affinities is gravity, meaning it is dark magic, my other affinity is pure. Oh I forgot to mention this. Pure isn't an element rather as in pure mana, meaning having an affinity with pure means that you have better mana control.

Pure mana is hard to control, that's why they come up with spell formulas such as [Fireball] although these formulas are then later called "spells." Think of formulas as guns, and mana as the bullet, you put the mana through and the formula shoots the mana.

I'm rambling too much about this whole magic thing aren't I? I sighed before hearing my mom call out my name. I closed the book by placing a random pen on the page before opening the door.

"Can you do the dishes for me?" My mom said, all I did was nod.

I went outside once again, although I forgot to ask for permission from mom this time. I'm going to be dead when I get home. I sighed before suddenly hearing a girl shout out "HEY!" I turned around and saw the same noble who I was with yesterday.

"The mage!" The girl stopped while breathing heavily in front of me. She smiled ecstatically. I only stared at her though, although it seemed like she enjoyed the company of a boring boy like me. "Can you show me magic again?" She requested once more.

And then she started her whole thing about magic again. I could tell she was a curious girl, a hope for the future. Curiosity is both useful and can be the cause of your death. Basically just goof around and find out.

"Say, why do you enjoy the company of a boring boy like me?" I asked without much thinking, I stared at the ground while she dropped her smile and looked at me.

"Do people tell you that? I don't think you're boring though. Magic aside, you're a good guy, how can that be boring!?" I widened my eyes.

A good guy can never be boring huh? Do you really consider me as a good guy? Will her view on me change if she knew the mistake I have made? I don't know how that logic works, but a part of me wants to believe in her stupid words.

Stupid may it be, it's innocent. "I see." I can only reply with that, I smiled while looking at her, although for some reason her eyes widened she seemed mesmerized.

"You smiled…"

"Is that weird?"

"No!"

I went home, facing the fury of the mother and the raging seas of a mother's worries. I took a bite of her food. I was quite happy with this life, somehow, more of my past life just kept disappearing, the mistakes that I made kept on slipping past my mind.

Was I getting used to this life? Maybe so, but it's a life I can welcome. Unknown to me something had whispered behind my brain, a past I wanted to forget so. A voice inside my brain rang, fear covered my body, cowering over me as I could only stare at the ground and quiver.

"Why? WHY!? WHY!? WHY DO YOU EXIST!?" Those words rang in my head, multiple flashes of my past life memories came rushing through me, those deadly stares, those harsh words, the heart-breaking moments in my life.

It all came rushing towards me while I could only stare in fear. My hands started to shake uncontrollably, my eyes widened, tears coming out from my eyes while my mom immediately alerted me.

"Shu! Shu! SHU!!!" Her shouts died down in the unending spiral of my dark life. Until all of it stopped, I was left alone in a dark void, and the only thing I could stare at was my past self. Brown hair and black eyes, a face that lacked emotions.

"Why? What did I do to deserve this blessing?" I asked but no one answered. I asked this question because I wanted an answer, an answer for my being, if an existence like me has no purpose nor reason to exist in the world then why was I even born in the first place? Why was I even in here? A part of me wanted to believe that since I was lucky enough to be borned I'd be able to do something, but nothing, nothing happened. In the end all I can do is grief on the ground while I regret every single memory that I have!

I kneeled down on the ground.

"No." Another voice appeared, I didn't know who it was… "The question should be, what did you do to not deserve this?"

I opened my eyes, my senses came back and I could hear my mom calling out for me. I felt the warmth of her palms enveloping my arms while she was crying tears. "Mom?"

"Shu!" She immediately hugged me while the only thing I could do was stare at her…
