Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Special task

Those words made the whole room fall silent for a moment and they begin to think of the one person who possibly has the chance to kill Mr. Eugene.

"Cad, is it possible that Mrs. Theresa killed Mr. Eugene?" Bradley stroked his chin.

"Brad, you can't just say anything." Caden patted his best friend's shoulder. "Madam Theresa is cruel, but we can't make conclusions too soon."

"That's true too, but .... "

Suddenly, someone knocks on Bradley's room, so he quickly opens the door and it turns out to be Madam Theresa.

"Madam, I have put all the groceries on the table downstairs." Bradley scratched his head. "What is it, Madam?"

She opens Bradley's room and finds Caden sitting on the floor. "You two go downstairs and prepare dinner."

Madam Theresa walks away from Bradley's room and the two of them immediately go downstairs to the kitchen. When they reach the kitchen, they see Madam Nigera there.

"Madam, what can we do for you?" asked Bradley, walking up to Madam Nigera as she is rinsing the vegetables and sorting out the rotten ones. "Madam Theresa sent us here."

Madam Nigera hands Bradley and Caden a kitchen knife and a potato peeler. "You can help me by cutting the vegetables and peeling the potato peels."

They both nod and take the assignment seriously until the atmosphere in the room is so quiet.

"Hey, do you two like soup?" Mrs. Nigera tried to break the silence.

"Yes, Madam. I like it a lot." Caden nodded his head as he peeled the potato in his hand.

"How about you, Bradley?" Madam Nigera picked up the pan and started pouring water into it.

"Me too, Madam." Bradley nodded his head as he continued to chop the vegetables with great care.

Madam Nigera said that the soup's recipe is made by her mother when she was a child before her mother passed away.

"Ah, what a wonderful childhood memory." Madam Nigera smiled as she began to put some of the vegetables Bradley had cut into the pot.

Bradley instantly dilates his eyes seeing Madam Nigera's smiling for the first time because, as long as she's been with Madam Theresa, she's never shown the slightest hint of a smile.

A few minutes later, the sound of thunderous footsteps hears from the dining room as Caden sees all the orphanage children along with Madam Theresa sitting at the dining table.

"Bradley, Caden you need to bring this soup to the dining room." Madam Nigera stirred her vegetable soup and poured it into bowls. "Hurry, before Madam Theresa furious."

They both nod their heads and quickly bring the soup to the dining room.

"Hmm, what a nice smell." Madam Theresa smelled the spices of Madam Nigera's soup and picked up the spoon on her left.

After all the orphanage children got all the soup, they all start eating their dinner. During dinner, Madam Theresa suddenly mentions manners class to Bradley and Caden.

"Madam, but we've already taken the class." Caden quickly replied to Madam Theresa's words.

"Who said you only take that class?" Madam Theresa raised her eyebrows sipping her soup. "Both of you already have experience, so, of course, you can teach all these children, right?"

The words leave them speechless and their faces tense as they hear them. Both of them couldn't believe what Madam Theresa says and at the same time, they are happy for being entrusted with the task.

"Class will start tomorrow," said Madam Theresa, wiping her mouth with the white cloth that is on the table and walking away from them.

"Jeez!" Caden panicked and looked at Bradley.

Caden quickly finished her soup and he can no longer enjoy Madam Nigera's soup in peace. His mind is restless, however, Bradley doesn't care too much about it.

"Brad, how can you be so calm?" Caden disturbed Bradley who seems still enjoying this soup.

"Cad, you're just disturbing my meal." Bradley glares at Caden. "At least let me enjoy this."

"Yeah, sorry my mistake. But I'm not used to this kind of thing at all." Caden whispers something in Bradley's ear. "I have stage fright."

"Just calm down, buddy "Bradley patted Cad's hand. "Woah Cad! What's wrong with your hand?" Bradley quickly let go of Caden's wet hand.

After dinner, all children left the room one by one. Bradley and Caden rush to the kitchen and clean up all the dishes.

"Argh! Why do we always have to clean all this up!" Bradley grumbled in annoyance as he rinsed the dirty dishes in his hands.

Caden put the plates into the brown basket. "I don't know, Madam Theresa seems to favor all those cool kids they're her source of income, right?"

"Yeah, that's true but they can if they want to learn, right?" Bradley said in a slightly raised tone. "Mr. Eugene teaches us we have to learn to be independent since childhood. Do you remember that?"

Caden nods and sighs and hears about it because the situation in this house seems to have changed since Madam Theresa's arrival.

"Argh! Madam Theresa is very good at hiding her true self," Bradley said as he wiped the sweat from his forehead and turned off the nearby water faucet.

"Ah, never mind. We should focus on our teaching materials for those kids." Caden put the last plate in the basket and covered it with a cloth.

The two of them immediately rushed to Caden's room then Caden picks up his yellow notebook under his bed and quickly flips each page of his notes.

"Hey look! This is the material about that." Caden tapped Bradley on the shoulder. "Hey, you didn't sleep did you?"

Caden finds it strange as Bradley doesn't respond to his words. He just keeps his head down without moving an inch. This time, Caden tapped Bradley's shoulder quite hard.

"Hey, Brad!" Caden yelled right in his ear, waking Bradley up.

"Huh! What's wrong?" Bradley said with 5-watt eyes and went back to sleep again.

Caden shakes his head and sighs. He is furious with Bradley's attitude of not listening to his explanation at all, but he realized something. What they have done today is very tiring.

"Well, I guess we should take a break," Caden said with a yawn.

The sound of birds chirping outside woke Bradley up. "Geez, I overslept last night."

He sees Caden still fast asleep, hugging his book tightly. Suddenly someone knocks on the door from outside and He quickly walks over to the door and opens it.

"Hello, I have something for you, big brother."

Two children from the orphanage are carrying a large box and handing it to Bradley and they leave shortly after.

"Strange, who gives this?"
