Chapter 23 - Joy on Rainy Days

One year before Marie's tragedy...

A 5-year-old girl was completely focused on what she was doing.

It was a rainy day, but the rain gave her a sense of calmness, despite her young age. When it rained, the little girl enjoyed painting even more.

"What are you painting, my dear daughter?" the father asked the little girl.

"I haven't finished yet, you can't look! DAD!" The little girl tried to cover the painting with her body and innocently replied.

Turning around, the father playfully responded, "Alright, alright! I'll turn around until you're done."

After a few minutes, the little girl exclaimed with satisfaction, "I finally finished!"

Upon hearing this, the father immediately turned around and approached the little girl quickly.

"Ohhh, let me see! Ohhhhhhhh!"

As he laid eyes on the drawing, the father couldn't help but be amazed, yet also a little sad.

In the drawing, there were two people: a little girl and her father playing outdoors in the rain. Although the painting was beautiful, it brought a tinge of melancholy to the father.

He and his daughter used to have fun in the rain, hidden from his wife. However, one day, his wife found out and, for the first time, she hit the little girl. For the first time as well, he raised his hand to his wife.

He was an experienced exterminator, but due to a trauma, he stopped going to tropical forests. As a result, he lost the prestige he had and also the affection of his wife, who wanted to divorce him but ended up getting pregnant.

His wife tried to have an abortion, but it was difficult to find someone capable of doing such a thing. It was one of the greatest crimes in the world, few people pursued such a career.

One day, the father noticed his wife's strange behavior and discovered that it was pregnancy symptoms.

Knowing that his wife wanted a divorce, he called someone to confirm the pregnancy without informing her.

It was on that day that the pregnancy became public, and it was on that day that he started getting beaten by his wife.

The little girl anxiously awaited her father's response.

"Dad? Didn't you like it?" she asked.

As he observed the drawing, the father couldn't help but burst into tears.

As he approached to embrace his daughter, he heard a sound, a sound that was his greatest terror.

A woman with short black hair, blue eyes, and a slender body entered the room.

She walked toward the father and the little girl... When her eyes landed on the little girl's painting, she questioned the girl:

"My beloved daughter, Marie."

The little girl trembled slightly and replied:

"Yes, Mom?"

The woman pretended a sad expression and asked:

"Why does this painting only have Father and Daughter?"

The little girl responded, responding as if she didn't realize the gravity of her words,

"Because Mom is mean, she hits the daughter and the father and-"

Before the little girl finished her words, the woman approached the painting.

"DEAR!"

The father tried to stop the woman but was kicked.

"Get out of the way, useless! I won't hit her because we're going out after the rain."

She used to go out with both of them to give the impression to everyone that they were a happy family.

The woman took the painting and went toward the bedroom window.

"Marie, look closely, Marie. Your painting is going for a ride."

The little girl observed, fearing what would happen. This wasn't the first time; her mother always, always did this with her paintings. She would always find faults in the paintings and destroy them in front of the girl.

She didn't prevent her daughter from making the paintings because she wanted to destroy them before her eyes. It was satisfying for her.

The little girl knew, knew very well the fate of all her paintings, but it didn't stop her.

Even knowing the outcome, she continued, she loved to paint, and even if only her father saw her paintings before they were destroyed, it was enough for her to keep painting.

Her father tried to stop her since they would be destroyed, but the little girl always went back to painting, and since the little girl spent most of her day at home, the father allowed her to do what she liked.

"My beloved daughter, Marie. Today will be a special day because it's raining!"

The woman laughed, holding the painting. She stared at her daughter, making sure she was looking, and then threw the painting out the window.

The woman made a movement and a lightning struck the painting.

!!

"Wowwwww!"

The woman was amazed at the sight. However, the daughter had no expression.

Satisfied, the woman walked toward the door and said,

"We'll go out after the rain. You better smile a lot, or... You know what will happen."

When the woman left, the father rushed and embraced his daughter.

"I don't like it, I don't like it when Mom hits Dad, destroys my paintings, or when she hits me, saying her life is over because of me... I don't understand, why... why is Mom so mean to me..."

Upon hearing this, the father hugged his daughter even tighter.

"It's not your fault, daughter, it's your father's fault. I'm truly useless, cowardly, but I swear, I'll do something about it..."

After another year of torment, the father decided to run away with his daughter. He truly did something about it, but he paid a price.
