Ten feet down the trail it turned a wide bend around an old Oak tree that spread its branches over the packed dirt. And in the shadow of it on the other side, David stood, looking tense.
His eyes lit when I appeared. "I'm sorry, but I had to know—" he started, but he didn't have time to finish before I threw myself into his chest, wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him down into a kiss.
Taken by surprise, he stumbled forward, gathering me up to his chest as he found his balance again, and he kissed me, one hand in my hair, the other wrapped around my lower back, pulling me up onto my tiptoes.
The kiss was deep and breathless, and far too quick.
But David pulled back a moment later, not letting go of me, his eyes searching mine. "What happened?" he asked in the most bewildered whisper.
