Chapter 9 - COUNTDOWN

The car sped off into the night as Jase tried to catch up to the fast-moving sedan.

Jase awkwardly launched his hooks onto rooftops to pull himself towards the car; if he fell from here, he'd surely break a few bones, if not worse.

While the car moved with some finesse and skill, Jase moved awkwardly, clipping his legs and feet against various rooftop vents and piping.

Dick thought he had made a big enough gap from the house, so he let off the accelerator. As he slowed down, he saw people on the sidewalks turn their heads upward. Dick followed their gazes up into the shadows of the night. What he saw left him speechless.

A green and orange figure moving quickly across rooftops, its long flowing hair dancing in the wind as if it had a mind of its own.

'That guy is insane!' thought Dick, as he pressed harder on the accelerator.

He soon realized that this figure was slowly approaching him from these rooftops, whoever this person was.

As the sedan accelerated, Dick began to panic. He was unsure why this person was approaching from the rooftops, but as the freak grew closer, he grew more uneasy by the second.

Tires squealed and the smell of burnt rubber filled the interior of the car, but Dick was too panicked to notice. The speedometer shot up rapidly: 0….10….20…30..40..50..60..70..80.

Jase was struggling to keep pace as the car sped up past 80mph; Dick had clearly seen him, but he had an idea for the next time Dick took a turn. He just had to keep following him for now.

As Jase's pursuit continued, he grew more and more comfortable with the mechanics of his swinging. His movements became more fluid and graceful with each swing.

Dick began to fear for his life as he sped through the narrow streets flooded with pedestrians pointing their phones to the sky, watching as he was chased.

Dick threw on his blinker, which was hardly useful with the way he was driving, but he did it with a purpose.

He turned on his left blinker and swung to his right.

'Clever,' thought Dick as he accelerated around the corner, his foot practically glued to the floor.

Jase watched from the rooftops; he hadn't been fooled for a second.

He swung right as he moved towards an upcoming stoplight that might work as a way to catch Dick at a complete stop.

Once Dick had lost sight of the figure, he again slowed down to the legal speed limit. He couldn't get pulled over driving a stolen car, now that he had lost that flying psycho. He drove down the street until he was forced to stop at a once-green light that was now turning yellow.

'Oh no, he thought as he pulled up to the now-red light.

"C'mon, c'mon" said Dick tensely, desperately willing the light to turn green.

Suddenly, he heard the thud of something hitting the roof.

Dick's face paled as he completely disregarded the stop light and floored it through the intersection.

Jase held on for dear life as the car accelerated, narrowly avoiding a collision with a family van.

The wind beat against his face; they were now starting to leave the city limits and began to merge onto the highways surrounding it.

Dick blew past the exit sign that read "Santa Rosa" as they quickly surpassed the posted speed limit signs that read "65 miles per hour."

Jase shot his grapple into the roof of the car so as to not fly off the roof as they reached these high speeds. Jase slid from the roof down to the trunk as the winch line slowly extended.

Dick finally managed to make out the face of his pursuer through his rearview mirror. His eyes widened as he recognized Jase as the psycho that had been swinging through the city.

As the speed of the car continued to climb, Jase continued to slip further as the line extended from the roof. He tried to keep himself oriented on the trunk, but the winch had slackened too much. He decided against pulling the line, in fear of tearing his anchor out of the roof, but at this point his footing was relying on the bumper of the car.

Dick's fear of Jase climbing into the car was a perfect counter to Jase's fear of becoming a streak of red across the pavement.

Dick didn't know what Jase had used to turn his ear to mincemeat, but he feared whatever it was.

'Wait,' he thought. 'Why didn't I hear him fall off?'

"FUCK!" shouted Jase.

Jase had finally lost his footing on the sedan's bumper, and as he grew closer to the pavement, this moment became do or die for him. A crazy plan began to brew inside his mind. If he failed this one shot, he would slam into the concrete at over sixty miles an hour.

He decided in the heat of the moment to hold his powerfists out and use them to push himself off the back of the car to gain enough air to reset his anchor on the roof of the car.

Jase quickly drew both of his fists to the side of his hips, bracing his body and leaning his torso forward as much as he could. As his powerfists activated, throwing his body into the air, an unforeseen consequence of his actions signaled the start of an event he would remember for the rest of his life.

At that instant, an imaginary countdown that signified a terrible series of events began to click down.

Click

-5 seconds.

Jase flew over ten feet into the air. Quickly retracting his line while firing his opposite winch towards the roof of the speeding vehicle.

Click

-4 seconds.

The second line shot out. The shot, intended to re-anchor Jase to the roof of the car, rocketed straight for the rear right wheel well of the small sedan.

The line flew as though it was in slow motion. Jase's eyes went wide as he saw the hook disappear into the wheel well.

Click

-3 seconds.

The line quickly began to coil itself around the wheel with every rotation. He watched helplessly as he saw the line slowly draining from the spool held on his wrist.

Click

-2 seconds.

His whole grapple line was yanked out by the car. By this time tomorrow, the police would be scraping him and Dick off the pavement.

The line had been fully yanked from Jase's grasp, leaving him in a near freefall.

Dick's future began to look grim, as his world would soon be flipped on its head.

Click

-1 second.

The car's wheel suddenly locked.

Dick's view went from the road ahead to the concrete below, and the air filled with the stench of burnt rubber as the tire's rotations came to a complete stop.

The car was sent into an unruly pirouette as it began to spiral through the air.

Dick was forced to his seat throughout this; he didn't truly understand what had happened; all he could do was hold his hand on the roof and brace.

Jase quickly prepared to impact the ground.
