Chapter 7 - Steps To Heaven

Later that night

After speaking to Anya and scheduling their next meeting, Wilder did some research on the workings of this world, gathering clues on his own at this point, and went to bed that night feeling accomplished.

Though he still couldn't figure out whose body he was in or why they looked so similar, Wilder couldn't help but feel accomplished.

Since his whole ordeal in the immortal world, he had been jumping from one body to another with no rest at all, so it was nice to finally get some rest.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

"Hey, wait up!" Wilder screamed at the top of his lungs at a moving vehicle in front of him as he tried to catch up.

Wilder now had a crimson-red military-grade uniform on as he chased down the bus.

Wilder stayed off campus, so he had to make his way to the academy every day; at least, that's what he found out from his research about the original owner.

There were so many similarities between Wilder and the original owner of this body.

One was that they had the same name. Another thing was that they both came from average families, so they knew how to manage and not spend on unimportant things.

And that was why Wilder was taking the bus to school.

When he first found out that they still had school buses after a thousand years, he was stunned, but then again, it made sense according to the history. A thousand years ago, mankind had been going from one difficulty to the next, from wars against each other to war to slavery, and finally war against those that enslaved them.

There was little to no time for certain types of luxury development; only the necessary was focused on. And as for the rest?

They adopted an "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" attitude.

"Puff," the doors to the bus finally stopped, allowing Wilder to board.

As soon as Wilder entered the bus, he saw someone waving frantically at him, clearly telling him to come over. Wilder couldn't really make out the face of this person, but he didn't know any of the people on this bus.

So he went straight to the back and had a seat.

As his eyes landed on the guy who was waving at him, he quickly recognized him from their photos.

He was one of Wilders' team members.

He was called Liam.

He had black hair, though it was a buzzcut, and he was of the most average height, but he made up for that with muscle.

He grabbed wilder's sickliy body and gave him a good shaking.

"Hey dude, I thought that you had lost the bet when I saw Noland and his cronies head for your room. I couldn't bear to watch, so I locked myself in, but when they came back out, my heart was so relieved. You should have seen them. They looked like hot pots had been placed..." The guy kept on rambling on and on as the bus rode off into the distance.

A few minutes later, the bus came to a stop in front of a big gate.

The gate had two towers perched on each side; it kind of looked like the guard towers used in medieval times, but the gate itself looked quite small in the face of these two towers.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Wilder and Liam could now be seen walking side by side inside the school gate.

Several groups of cadets in military uniform ran past them, but not more than once.

According to what Wilder had read, the military was the single place where people with average backgrounds like him could make it big; they not only provided a degree, but also a free ticket to employment as most exceptional students were absorbed into the military as permanent staff after their mandatory service.

But those weren't the most attractive things in the military. The most attractive things were the high-heaven gaming cabins.

Even though the human king had created the game High-Heaven to help mankind get stronger, it was still expensive to make, and as in-game sales became more prominent, the prices of the cabins kept shooting through the roof.

There was no way he would be able to have a cabin right now without the military footing the bill.

"Dude, check it out. Anya is challenging the steps to heaven again." Liam pointed outwards.

A very fit young girl could be seen by the side of the academy main building. She had on her usual sports attire.

Right in front of her was a structure that shot up into the sky. It looked quite strange; it looked more or less like a ladder, but on closer inspection, one could notice a few things about it.

First, there seemed to be an obstacle course on each level of the ladder-like structure, though they seemed to be getting more complicated the higher one went.

The second was the lack of steps.

Yes, it was a ladder, but it looked like what giants, not humans, would use if they were to access those obstacle courses. They would need to be able to get there first.

Wilder stood there in his thoughts when

"boom"

Anya had bent down and jumped up, landing on the first level of the ladder.

Wilder was in shock at that distance. Even the world's best high jumper in his time on earth couldn't do that.

Not long after, she started crossing the obstacle course one after the other.

"You think she will get to the enhanced level?" Liam, who was at the side of Wilder, asked him

Of course, Wilder didn't know what he was talking about, but he couldn't really ask him because it would seem suspicious.

"I don't know," Wilder said as his eyes remained glued to the ladder-like structure.

Anya was really going at it after a few minutes. At this point, Wilder frowned.

She was clearly exhausted.

He was right; after barely making it to the 7th level, she stopped and laid down on her back.

A screen on the side of the structure suddenly glowed red, indicating that she had failed.

"she's incredible!!" Liam was aesthetic for some reason, but she had clearly failed.

What he didn't know was that she had made massive improvements at this stage last time. Last time, she only managed to get to the 6th level.

And it had barely been a week.

"hm?" After staring at the so-called Steps to Heaven" for a while, Wilder noticed someone walk past his line of sight.

"Isn't that Noland?" Wilder asked

"Ah, you haven't been around for a while. Noland got accepted into the special grade a few days ago," Liam looked over and explained to Wilder.

The special grade

Wilder was particularly talented. So he got into the special grade, right After getting accepted into the Warhawk Academy, Noland was rich, so even though his Aptitude wasn't high tier, he could still pull some strings to get in.

"It's almost time to go," said Liam Dragged Wilder, who was in deep thought after seeing Noland.

The guy seemed fishy, plus Wilder was convinced that Noland had to owe him something after losing the bet.

"okay okay…." After a brief moment, Wilder agreed to walk forward.

Only he knew what was going through his mind.
