Chapter 17 - A Test of Loyalty

The sun had barely risen when Xander awoke to the sound of chaos outside his window. The panicked shouts of his family and the clang of steel on steel echoed through the air. Xander's heart raced as he quickly got dressed, his thoughts consumed by the danger that seemed to be lurking just outside his door.

As he made his way down the hall, the voice in his head whispered dark thoughts, urging him to embrace his blood magic and use it to protect his family. Xander hesitated, knowing the potential consequences of revealing his secret, but the sounds of battle grew louder, leaving him with no choice but to act.

He burst into the courtyard, where he found his family's guards locked in combat with a group of armed men. His mother and father were huddled in a corner, fear etched on their faces, while his younger siblings clung to them for dear life. The guards fought bravely, but they were outnumbered, and it was clear that they were struggling to hold their ground.

Xander's eyes narrowed as he watched the battle, and he noticed that among the guards, there was one man who seemed to be a cut above the rest. This warrior, likely a former student of the capital's prestigious academy, moved with grace and skill, his blade cutting through the air like a razor. Despite his prowess, however, even he seemed to be struggling against the relentless onslaught of the attackers.

As Xander watched, he realized that these men were not just simple bandits. They were trained, ruthless killers, sent by someone from the capital to eliminate his family. His heart pounded in his chest as he considered the implications of this revelation, wondering who could have possibly sent them and why.

With no time to dwell on these questions, Xander leapt into action, grabbing a sword from one of the fallen guards and joining the fray. He fought with all his might, his blade clashing against those of the attackers as he desperately tried to protect his family.

But even as he fought, Xander knew that his skill with the sword was not enough. The attackers were too strong, too skilled, and his family was in mortal danger. He needed more power, and his mind kept returning to the one source he knew could turn the tide of battle: his blood magic.

As if sensing his desperation, the voice in his head grew louder, urging him to unleash his dark powers and save his family. Xander hesitated, torn between his loyalty to his family and the fear of what his magic might do to them.

In the heat of battle, however, there was little time for hesitation. As one of the attackers broke through the guards' defenses and charged toward Xander's mother, he made his decision.

With a roar of determination, Xander reached deep within himself and called upon his blood magic. The plants around him came alive, their vines and tendrils reaching out to ensnare the attackers. The sharp thorns pierced their flesh, the pain momentarily stopping them in their tracks.

"Why were the plants here you might ask?" Xander thought to himself as he took in the scene. It seemed that the magic-infused plants he had been cultivating in the cave had spread to the area surrounding his home. They now covered the entire courtyard, their vines and tendrils reaching out hungrily, as if waiting for a command.

The guards, including the skilled warrior from the capital, stared in shock as the plants attacked their foes. But they quickly recovered, seizing the opportunity to press their advantage and drive the attackers back.

As the battle raged on, Xander continued to direct the plants, using them to protect his family and assist the guards. He could feel the dark power coursing through him, and he knew that he was walking a dangerous line. But with each successful strike, each attacker brought down, his resolve only grew stronger.

Finally, the tide of battle began to turn. The attackers, battered and bleeding, started to retreat, their once-confident expressions replaced with fear and desperation. Xander's family, now safe from harm, watched in awe as he commanded the plants, their expressions a mix of relief and confusion.

As the last of the attackers fled, Xander allowed the plants to return to their normal state, their vines and tendrils retreating back into the ground. Exhausted and covered in sweat, he turned to face his family, steeling himself for their questions and the potential fallout from his actions.

Before his family could speak, Xander's attention shifted to the last fleeing attacker. With a determined expression, he focused his energy on the plants around the man. Suddenly, a mass of vines shot out from the ground, wrapping tightly around the terrified man. Xander ordered the plants to drag the captive back towards the cave, intending to interrogate him later.

His mother was the first to speak after the dramatic scene, her voice trembling as she asked, "Xander, what... what was that? How did you do that?"

Xander hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. The voice in his head urged him to lie, to protect his secret at all costs. He decided to only share part of the truth.

"I... I've been learning magic," he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "I discovered a book about plant magic, and I've been practicing in secret."

His father's eyes narrowed, suspicion and concern etched on his face. "Plant magic? That's... unusual, Xander. But it seems like you've become quite skilled."

Xander swallowed hard, his gaze meeting his father's. "I thought that if I could master it, I could protect our family, and earn your respect."

His younger siblings stared at him with wide, admiring eyes, while his mother and father exchanged surprised glances. The skilled warrior from the capital, who had witnessed Xander's powers firsthand, approached him cautiously.

"You saved us today, Xander," he said, his voice steady but serious. "But any magic can be dangerous if used irresponsibly. You must be careful and continue to practice with caution."

Xander nodded, relieved that his family didn't suspect the true nature of his abilities. He knew that their trust in him had been strengthened, but he also knew he needed to be careful not to reveal his secret.

But as he looked at the retreating figures of the attackers and thought of the captured outlaw in his cave, he couldn't help but feel a flicker of determination.

With a renewed sense of purpose, Xander vowed to continue honing his plant magic skills, while also keeping his blood magic a secret. He knew that the road ahead would be filled with challenges and danger, but he was ready to face them head-on, no matter the cost.
