Chapter 2 - Unlocking the door to a stranger

Awaking to the feeling of sweat soaked sheets stuck to her skin, Mya took notice of the soft comfort of a well cushioned mattress holding her weight. While extending an arm out, a sudden sensation of another's skin made her flinch. Opening her heavy eyes to the ceiling above, Mya realized she was in a bed and not the school. Yawning loudly, she slowly rolled to her side and took in her surroundings of the room. Her vision still a bit blurred, she couldn't make sense of how she got into a bedroom. While her pastel green eyes were now beginning to adjust to the light within, she grew more curious. Taking note of the off white walls and the desk by the window, confusion pushed her to sit up. It was then her attention was taken by a picture frame on the desk she didn't recognize. "Wha-" Before she was able to get her words out an unknown arm slowly wrapped around her waist, pulling her back into the bed. Now laying trapped within the grasp of a stranger's arms she could feel the softness of their chest, a female. "Hey~ seems like you got some good sleep?" A soft and groggy voice tickled her ear as the words blew past it. "Wh-Where am I? Let go of me?! What's going on!?" Mya began to panic as she couldn't place any of her own thoughts together. "You mean you don't remember? That's a shame…" She was released and quickly got out from the messy bed and to her feet. Her eyes locked onto the other girl, the same one she had seen before. Her head began to play flashes and small fractured scenes of memory. Crying, drinking, the suddenness of these visions caused her great strain. She grabbed her head tight as it felt as if it was gonna pop for a moment. "Hey, you should probably sit down. I'll explain everything, but you look pretty pale." The girl said this with a genuine look of concern for Mya.

She felt it was for the best to do as this girl suggested. Wanting to keep her distance however, Mya made herself comfortable at the end of the bed opposite of this girl. "First, cause you don't seem to remember, we met yesterday. My name is Claire and I'm 25. I'm not really focusing on anything right now but I'm in a few classes with you. What else…uhh, oh! I like art and paint in my free time." Claire began to get into sharing her own personal experiences with Mya, however Mya was growing increasingly more impatient. "Just tell me what happened and why I'm here!" She demanded while slapping the bed. Her furrowed brows and the rapid tapping of her finger while her arms were crossed gave Claire a clear sense that she wanted answers. "Right, sorry. Well, I found you in the hallway. You fell into me and looked like you had been crying your eyes out. I brought you along with my friends to a bar we were all going to because you didn't want to let go of my arm. Is any of this coming back?" Claire didn't seem like the type to lie, at least given the short time Mya has spent with her. 'Her eyes didn't seem to waver..' Pressing her fingers against the center of her brow, Mya groaned. "You took me to a bar? No wonder my memory is so bad. Why would you…" Before she had the chance to throw blame, a memory returned to her. One which showed that she herself was the reason Claire brought her along. Her face gained a subtle red tint as she got quiet. "N-never mind, please go on." Given the green light Claire continued her own recollection of the events. "Well hitting the bar we had some drinks. I wasn't really sure what your limit was but you got really cranky with me when I cut you off! It was pretty cute though, watching you beg." Mya became far more embarrassed about the situation after hearing this girl make such a comment. Her body seemed to relax a little more as Claire continued. "You got really mad and started giving me all the reasons why you needed more drinks. You told me about some video you were in and that some people had…uh. Hey Mya? You alright?" While sharing her recollection of the night before, Claire took notice of Mya's clear disgust and fear at the mention of the video. Claire's concern grew more serious as she glanced at Mya's hand, no longer tapping but now clawing at her own skin across her arm. Claire crawled over and softly placed her hand on top of it to stop her. Mya's eyes locked on to the foreign hand that was so gently holding her own. 'It's warm…I wonder why her hand feel so warm?' Mya's confusion was outweighing her feelings of fear. Her body started to relaxed again and her eyes became less glazed with discomfort. "Hey, let's take a break. Come on I'll make you breakfast! I hope waffles ok?" Claire said cheerfully as she flashed a gentle smile, hoping to make Mya more comfortable. Deciding the next step, the girls got out of Claire's bed together and began their morning with some breakfast.

Due to the events of the night prior, Mya had no choice but to borrow Claire's clothes. Initially she refused but, was eventually forced to accept it as her own clothes were soaked with booze. The girls took turns after breakfast to take showers and freshen up. Claire made a joke about how they should shower together to lessen the water usage, but she was the only one who found it funny. Mya picked out some of Claire's most covering clothes from her closet and ended up with an interesting look. A sleeveless black sweater with a purple and pink skull on the chest, along with black ripped jeans and white boots. Claire wasn't able to resist the urge to laugh, and to her surprise Mya joined in. "You look like you just stole clothes from your sister's closet! What's with the big goth punk vibe huh?" Claire teased while wiping away some tears from her watering eyes. "They were in your closet you know? You were the one who said that my sweats weren't salvageable!" Mya complained with equal frustration and embarrassment clear on her face. The two shot some continued banter around before Claire finally convinced Mya to let her choose the outfit. After several attempts at pleasing Mya's strict tastes, Claire found a great look for her that Mya seemed to enjoy as well. A short shoulder sleeve red shirt with a white lily design on the chest. Over that she had a cropped jean jacket paired with white pants and her own light brown boots. The outfit seemed to really complement her figure as well. "Wow girl, you clean up nice! This is way better than those dumb sweats!" Claire began to spew out a flood of compliments which caused Mya to become very shy. She hid behind her hair as she pulled it in front of her strawberry red face. Watching closely, Claire felt her own face grow warmer the more she looked at Mya. 'This isn't good…this girl..' Mya sat down on the end of the bed facing the kitchen. "So you live off campus? That's cool. I do too now, but that's just because I don't like roommates." It was Mya's genuine attempt to make small talk that seemed to surprise Claire, but in a good way. Claire felt relieved to see Mya was that comfortable with her now. "It's nicer right! Apartments aren't cheap, but they're so much more comfortable! It makes it easier to clean as well when you're not stuck with others." The next couple hours, the girls grew closer. Bonding of similar interests and enjoying learning new things about each other. Each showed clear interest in the words the other had to share. All in all it was clear they got along well.

The morning passed them by before they realized. The sound of a loud grumbling scream from Claire's stomach broke their conversation. "Ahaha! Guess all this talking made me hungry!" Softly rubbing the back of her head with a small blush visible in her cheeks, she looked down to her phone. "Oh wow! It's already Noon!" She turned the phone for Mya to see, and a look of worry came over her face. "Hang on, what is today?" Frantically she pulled up her schedule on her own phone. Her face dropped as she almost fell off the bed in distress. "I…I've never skipped a class before. What do I do now? This professor is super strict with attendance! He might alter my grade because of this!" Mya was practically hyperventilating over this realization. Her thumbs frantically swiping around her screen trying to navigate a possible solution. Claire rolled her eyes before snatching the phone right out of Mya's hands. "Hey! Give me-" Her mouth was covered by a hand before she could finish the sentence. "Breathe babes. One missed class won't end the world. Besides I missed it too. See we have the same class today." Claire showed Mya her own phone revealing that to be true. As the panic faded from her face, her eyes settled down on Claire's hand on her mouth. Mya suddenly felt a slight twitch from her heart which made her flinch. "Ah sorry!" Claire took her hand away quickly and uncovered Mya's rosy red cheeks. The sight of this pushed a thought to the front of Claire's mind. 'I wonder what face she'd make…if I touched her more.' Her hand, as if being pulled by a string, guided its way toward Mya's thigh. Claire wasn't even aware she was leaning closer toward her in the process. Mya was preoccupied with her own struggle of understanding the strange jitter in her chest. 'What was that? It was uncomfortable, but didn't hurt. Strange. If it happens again I'll just bring it up to the doctor or…' As Mya's eyes returned to the present situation, they slowly widened with surprise. Claire's face was just mere inches from her own, close enough to smell the mint scent of the toothpaste on her breath. Those soft brown eyes of Claire's glistened with a hunger Mya had never seen before. From so close the two could see so clearly the smaller details of one another. From Mya's long eye lashes and naturally pink and softened lips, to Claire's mole under her left eye and the small scar of an old piercing on the bridge of her nose. The outside world slowly began fading from the two girls peripherals, becoming nothing more than a background for their focus. Mya had never felt such a strong pull before, and her mind kept filling with blanks. Had it not been for the sudden sound of a doorbell buzzing repeatedly, one could only wonder what would have happened?
