Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Unsettling Clues

It had been a week since the murder of Maria, and Luke and Stella had been working tirelessly on the case. They had gone over every inch of the crime scene, examined the evidence, and questioned everyone who had come into contact with Maria in the days leading up to her death.

Yet, they still had nothing to go on. No motive, no suspects, no discernible pattern. It was as if the killer had simply vanished into thin air.

Luke was starting to feel the pressure. He had never failed to solve a case before, but this one was proving to be a tough nut to crack. He found himself waking up in the middle of the night, consumed by thoughts of Maria and her killer.

Stella, on the other hand, seemed to be handling the stress better. She remained calm and focused, methodically sifting through the evidence and searching for any clues that might help them break the case.

One afternoon, while they were going through the photos from Maria's phone, Stella noticed something strange. In one of the pictures, Maria was wearing a necklace that was different from the one she had been wearing when she was found dead.

"Luke, come look at this," she called out, beckoning him over to her desk. "Do you see what I'm seeing?"

Luke leaned over her shoulder and examined the photo closely. Sure enough, Maria was wearing a gold necklace with a small pendant, whereas the necklace found on her body was silver and had no pendant.

"That's strange," Luke said, furrowing his brow. "Why would she have changed her necklace?"

"I don't know," Stella replied, "but it's something we should look into. Maybe she lent it to someone or someone stole it from her."

They immediately set to work trying to track down the missing necklace. They went back through all of Maria's social media posts, looking for any photos or mentions of the necklace, and questioned her friends and family.

Finally, after several days of dead ends, they got a break. One of Maria's friends mentioned seeing a photo of her wearing the necklace at a local club a few days before her death.

Luke and Stella went to the club and spoke to the bartender, who remembered seeing Maria wearing the necklace and chatting with a man at the bar. He described the man as tall and muscular, with short blond hair and a tattoo on his left forearm.

The description matched that of a man who had been caught on camera near Maria's apartment building around the time of her murder. Luke and Stella had a lead.

They spent the next few days trying to track down the man in the photo. They scoured the area around Maria's apartment, talking to anyone who might have seen him. Finally, they found someone who recognized him as a regular at a nearby gym.

Luke and Stella went to the gym and found the man working out. They approached him, identified themselves as police officers, and asked him to come down to the station for questioning.

The man, whose name was David, was initially reluctant to talk, but after some prodding, he admitted to meeting Maria at the club and taking her back to his apartment for a one-night stand. He claimed he had nothing to do with her murder and had no idea who could have killed her.

Luke and Stella didn't entirely believe David's story, but they didn't have any concrete evidence to tie him to the crime. They had hit a dead end once again.

As they left the station, Luke couldn't shake the feeling that they were missing something. There had to be a connection between David and Maria's murder, but he couldn't put his finger on what it was.

Stella could tell Luke was getting frustrated.
