Stella had been working non-stop since the murder of Officer Chen. She spent long hours at the station, poring over evidence and witness statements, trying to make sense of the chaos. She barely had time to eat or sleep, let alone see Luke.
But one evening, as she was leaving the station, she received a call from an unknown number.
"Hello?" she answered, slightly wary.
"Stella? It's me, Luke."
Stella's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't heard from Luke in days. "Luke, where have you been? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, but we need to talk. Can you meet me at the park in half an hour?"
Stella hesitated. She had work to do, but she also needed to see Luke. "Okay, I'll be there."
She arrived at the park to find Luke waiting for her on a bench. He looked tired and a bit disheveled, but he still managed to give her a small smile.
"Luke, what's going on? Why have you been avoiding me?" Stella asked.
"I haven't been avoiding you, I've just been busy," Luke replied, looking away.
"Busy with what?" Stella pressed.
Luke sighed. "I've been doing my own investigation. I don't trust anyone at the department right now, not after what happened to Officer Chen."
Stella frowned. "Luke, you can't just take matters into your own hands. You could get in serious trouble."
"I know, but I had to do something. I can't just sit back and watch while innocent people get hurt."
Stella softened. She understood Luke's need to find justice, but she also knew he was putting himself in danger. "Okay, tell me what you've found out."
Luke leaned in closer. "I've been following a lead. I think I know who's responsible for Chen's death."
Stella's eyes widened. "Who? Tell me everything."
Luke proceeded to tell her about a local gang, known for their involvement in drug trafficking and other illegal activities. He had been keeping tabs on them for weeks, and he believed one of their members was responsible for Chen's murder.
"I can't prove anything yet, but I'm getting close. I just need a little more time," Luke said.
Stella was impressed by Luke's detective work, but she was also worried. "Luke, this is dangerous. You can't take on an entire gang by yourself."
"I'm not alone. I have you," Luke said, taking her hand.
Stella felt a warm sensation spread through her body. She had always admired Luke's bravery and determination, but she never expected him to turn to her for help.
"Okay, what do you need me to do?" she asked.
"I need you to keep investigating the department. See if you can find any connections between the gang and the police. And be careful. I don't want anything to happen to you," Luke said, squeezing her hand.
Stella nodded, feeling a sense of purpose. She had always wanted to make a difference, to be a hero like Luke. And now, she had the opportunity to do just that.
"Okay, I'll do it. We'll figure this out together," she said, smiling at Luke.
Luke grinned back at her, his eyes shining with determination. "Together."
