Chapter 23 - CHAPTER 23- Self-Amputation

"Oh, guys, we're in trouble again. Some of them could break our bones if we let them live till sunset," said Mark.

"Yeah, but it's hard to kill these bastards with these weapons," Captain Bron replied.

"Mr. Chairman, how many bullets do you have?" Jhohan asked.

"I only shot once," Fernando replied.

"Okay, Captain and Mark, could you please get the ropes?" Jhohan said.

"Mr. Chairman, could you take one bullet for every one of their heads?" Jhohan asked.

"Oh, sure, dear," Fernando replied.

"Are you ready, kids?" Fernando said.

"Let's grab this opportunity now!" he added.

Fernando fired at the monster in front of them, the bullet piercing its head. Seizing the opportunity, Jhohan swung the rope and hurled it at the monster's head like a skilled cowboy. Captain Bron and Mark rushed to help Jhohan pull the monster, but it fought back fiercely and refused to budge. Fernando also lent a hand, but they still struggled to overpower the beast, which was terrified of the sunlight.

"Why won't it give up?" Captain Bron yelled.

"Stop talking and pull harder!" Jhohan commanded.

Several men arrived and quickly joined the effort. With a collective shout, they pulled with all their might until the monster was finally dragged out of the house.

As they emerged in the middle, they were met with a horrifying sight - a group of monsters at every door, growling and snarling. The men were filled with fear, but Fernando wasted no time and fired his gun at every monster, hitting them all with perfect accuracy. The monsters screamed in agony, and the team repeated their successful strategy of using ropes to drag the monsters out of the houses.

"The sun is going down. We have to get out of here quickly," Captain said. Everyone nodded in agreement.

As they walked, they pointed their guns at the monsters they passed, the creatures still snarling and waiting for their chance to attack.

Mark looked up and saw the sun going down. "Guys! You have to run now!" he shouted.

The shadow of the night slowly arrived, and the monsters began jumping out of the shadows. The men started firing at the beasts as they followed them. Two of the men were caught up by the monsters and had their heads eaten. Some of the men tried to help and shoot, but the monsters jumped on them and cut their bodies with their claws.

"Keep moving," Fernando said, firing his gun to protect them from behind.

Captain saw his uncle and joined him. "Bron, what are you doing? Just keep moving," Fernando said.

"I already made a promise to my aunt to protect you at all costs," Captain said.

The night finally covered the village, and Mark and Jhohan saw them. They ran back to join them. "Give me the gun, Mr. Chairman. Grandma is waiting for you," Jhohan said. "Let us, Mark. Leave here," she added.

"Are you losing your mind, Jhohan?" Captain said.

"Don't worry about us, Captain. We can handle this. Just protect the Chairman and get back to the bunker," Mark said.

"No, you're too young to die. Leave me here," Fernando refused to give up the gun as he continued firing.

"Just trust us, Mr. Chairman," Jhohan said. "And I'm sorry to do this," she added.

She swiftly kicked the gun out of the Chairman's hand and took it. "You go now!" Jhohan said.

They looked at them for a moment before moving, "Let's go, uncle," Captain said.

Mark and Jhohan continued to protect them as they made their way out from the village, and as they were ascending closer to the bunker, a monster suddenly jumped in front of them. Some of the men were killed while firing their guns, but from a distance, Jhohan managed to hit the monster in the head and heart with a single shot. Only four men out of the 15 who started the journey were left by the time they reached the bunker's entrance.

As they were about to enter, the supposedly dead monster suddenly reached out and grabbed Fernando's right foot, causing him to shout in pain. The men quickly shot at the monster until it was dead. They helped Captain and Fernando inside the bunker and closed the door behind them. They laid Fernando on the ground and used a t-shirt to tie up his deep wound.

As one of the men was about to lock the door, Fernando stopped him and said, "Wait, let's wait for Mark and Jhohan."

"Sorry, chairman, I don't see them coming," the man replied as he looked outside through a small hole.

"Send him inside and I will wait here," Fernando said.

"Okay, Chairman."

"Just lock the door, Uncle, while you're waiting for them. We don't know if they could survive," Captain said.

As they entered inside, Fernando remembered his daughter and son-in-law in the same situation as he waited for them, hoping that they were safe. Since the outside was so quiet, he looked back again through the hole, but still no sign of them. He lost hope and started walking inside. As he heard gunshots again, he turned back to look outside. He breathed a sigh of relief as he saw them coming. He immediately removed the big bolt latch and grabbed the rifle from his side. He opened the door.

"Why did you two take so long?!" he scolded them.

Mark and Jhohan turned around and ran to the door.

"Sorry Mr.Chairman , We ran out of bullets, so we went back to the village and hid," Mark said.

"Let's go inside!"

After They locked the door.Jhohan suddenly noticed a trail of blood on the ground. "Where's Captain?" she asked urgently.

"Is this blood from Captain?" Mark added.

Fernando's face fell."Yes, that's his blood. The monster got his right foot," he replied grimly.

"Damn it! We have to check on him now," Jhohan said

With adrenaline pumping through their veins, they sprinted towards the elevator,

When they arrived, they found Captain Bron lying on the ground, his life quickly ebbing away.

"He's losing a lot of blood," one of the men said urgently.

"Why did you cut your leg?" Fernando demanded, looking at Captain Bron's face.

The captain managed a weak smile. "Did you forget what you said to me when I was studying as a soldier?" he asked.

"A true soldier isn't measured by the number of medals on his chest or the stripes on his uniform. It's the willingness to put everything on the line, to lay down his life for his country and his fellow citizens, that truly makes a man great." he added

Fernando nodded in understanding, "You always were a brave man, Bron," he said.

Captain Bron's eyes fluttered open, his face pale and covered in sweat. "It's better for me to die than to become one of them" he whispered weakly.

Jhohan quickly assessed the wound on Captain Bron's leg. "We need to stop the bleeding," she said. "Do we have any medical supplies?"

"We have some bandages and antiseptics," the man replied.

"We need to cauterize the wound," Mark said, his voice firm.

Jhohan nodded. "I'll do it," she said, grabbing a knife from his pocket.

"And Mark get the bag on the storage room" Jhohan added

Mark quickly ran to the room, while Fernando held Captain Bron down as Jhohan heated the knife over a flame. With a deep breath, he pressed the hot blade to the wound. Captain Bron screamed in pain, but Fernando held him still.

After what felt like an eternity, Jhohan pulled the knife away. The wound was seared shut, the bleeding stopped.

Jhohan grabbed the supplies and began to clean and dress the wound.

Mark handed the bag to Jhohan with a sense of urgency. "Here," he said, almost breathless. Jhohan knew what to do. She quickly opened the bag, revealing the precious syringes containing OrganismX Liquid.

"Captain," she said, turning to the wounded man, "this will help to cure your wounds and prevent you from being infected." She injected the OrganismX into Captain Bron's arm and waited anxiously for any signs of improvement.

Meanwhile, Lydia took her twins to her room, not wanting them to see the chaotic situation outside. She was feeling emotional and needed to calm down.

"Hey, my babies, let's go inside the room," she said, ushering them in.

"What happened to Uncle Bron? Is he sick?" one of the twins asked.

"No, he was just tired from fighting those monsters," Lydia explained.

"Why was he screaming?" the other twin asked.

"Oh, baby, he was just fine," Lydia reassured them with a smile.

As they waited for the OrganismX to take effect, Fernando instructed them to move Captain Bron to his room. "Help me to get him up," he said, his voice laced with concern. Together, they lifted the wounded man and carried him to Fernando's room, where they laid him down on the bed.

Jhohan checked Captain Bron's pulse while Fernando paced back and forth, his thoughts consumed with worry. After what seemed like an eternity, Captain Bron's breathing became more steady and his color started to return.

"It's working," Mark said, relief evident in his voice. "The OrganismX is fighting for his body."

Fernando let out a sigh of relief and placed a reassuring hand on Captain Bron's shoulder. "You're going to be okay," he said,

"Well, I guess I should be more careful with my words next time," Fernando chuckled. "I never thought you would take it to heart and start chopping off your own limbs."

Captain Bron let out a weak laugh. "I guess I took your lessons a bit too literally. But hey, at least I can still kick some monster butt with one leg!"

They all laughed, but Jhohan couldn't help but roll her eyes. "Men and their macho tendencies," she muttered under her breath.

"Uncle, we need to abandon this village for the safety of everyone," Captain said, his tone serious.

"You're right, but many of us are scared to leave this bunker, especially your Aunt," Fernando replied.

"Tomorrow morning, the rescuers will come down here. Please tell them, Uncle," Captain said.

"Okay, just rest for now. I'll try to convince them," Fernando said reassuringly and they leave him to rest.

Fernando, Jhohan, and Mark stood at the center of the bunker, surrounded by the frightened faces of their fellow survivors. The tension in the air was palpable, and Fernando knew he had to be the one to break it.

"Listen up, everyone," he began, his voice ringing out over the murmurs and whispers. "Tomorrow morning, the rescuers are coming down here to get us out of this place."

A few gasps and murmurs of relief rippled through the crowd, but many still looked uncertain and fearful.

"Now, I know some of you are scared to leave this bunker," Jhohan interjected, her eyes scanning the room. "But staying here is not an option. We have to trust that the rescuers know what they're doing, and they will get us out safely."

Mark stepped forward, his expression serious. "We need to get ready tonight, gather all our supplies and make sure we're packed and ready to go. We can't waste any time tomorrow."

Fernando nodded in agreement. "We'll have to move quickly and efficiently. But I have faith that we can do this. We've been through hell, but we're still standing. And tomorrow, we'll make it out of here together."

With that, the three of them dispersed to help organize and prepare for the rescue mission. Slowly but surely, the fear and uncertainty in the bunker began to dissipate, replaced by a glimmer of hope and determination. They were going to make it out of there..

Fernando entered his wife's room and sat beside the kids. "Lydia, this is our last night in this bunker," he said.

Lydia asked, "What do you mean?"

"We're leaving tomorrow," Fernando replied. "It's the best decision for us right now."

Lydia became emotional and asked, "But what if they fail to save us?"

"We need to be strong, Lydia, for our safety," Fernando said. "We have to trust that they will rescue us."

Fernando hugged and kissed her forehead to comfort her. "I understand you, Lydia. I really do. But we need to be strong for now."

"Are we going to get out of here, Grandpa?" one of the twins asked.

"Yes, my darling," Fernando replied.

The twins cheered, "So we can see Mom and Dad again, yay!"

Lydia and Fernando felt guilty for hiding the truth from the kids that their parents had already died.
