"Your order Ms," The bartender slides my drink to me.
I smiled at him and dropped my penny on the counter, he picked it up and flicked it into the air. I giggled as he stared at me lustfully and bite the coin.
The bar was crowded as usual because we were preparing for the holidays, but instead of staying at their houses or helping decorate the streets, most men spend their free time betting and having shots in the bar.
"Wow," I ducked as a little girl almost beheaded me with a tree branch, she stared at me and mouthed "Sorry,".
Spire Fell was a small town with lots of enthusiasm, the people were always supportive and welcoming. Well, it was because this part of town was meant for the Omegas, that's us, the weakest in the pack. Our Alpha, Gerald, was kind and always looked out for us.
He ruled Spire Fell for decades and kept the peace between us and other packs, Gerald was old and was slacking behind in leading and controlling the activities happening around the pack, people rumored in the streets that he wanted to pass the Alpha position down to his Beta.
Because just like every great leader, Gerald has to step down and pass the power on to his subordinate. In Spire Fell, females are not permitted to obtain the Alpha position, if any female Beta kills an Alpha, that Beta must be executed. But her execution won't be as a punishment, but as a celebration for the pack. She risked her life to protect the pack! So they believed.
"Ready to go howl in the woods?" Sigrid poked my shoulders.
"It's cold, I've no tension getting my paws frozen." I shrugged.
"Come on Charlie..."
She ran right in front of me. "Don't you want to build a snowman?" She said as she giggled like a little girl on Christmas morning.
"Pff.." I blew out some air, "Fine," I agreed on impulse cause of the way she looked at me with her charming green eyes. It was sparkling and the joy she derived playing with the snow made her look like a princess I saw in grandpa's old storybook.
We walked deep into the woods and reached a cliff, Sigrid collapsed on the ground as she made a snow angel. I sighed and collapsed right next to her, we both made snow angels.
"Let's build a snowman," Sigrid said as she sat up straight.
"Really? My hand is shaking," I complained rubbing my palms together.
"Okay just sit over here, I'll go find some tree branch to use for his hands," Sigrid said full of energy as she ran into the woods.
I smiled and turned to the edge of the cliff - the sky had green lines on them and it suddenly made me remember the first time I saw Sigrid. She got into trouble with an old woman selling apples in the local market, I can't remember what really happened but all I could remember was how cute she was when she was trying to defend herself.
Her dark hair covered her left eye, and she looked pale like a vampire. I almost thought she was going to die at that moment, so I interfered and paid for the apples. Sigrid smiled at me and tossed me an apple, she held my hand and told everyone in the village that I was her new best friend.
We made each other friendship bracelets and promised never to leave each other's side, it's been six years, and Sigrid and I, are more than just friends. We are like sisters.
"Help!" Sigrid's voice echoed in the woods.
"Sigrid!" I stood up almost immediately.
I saw her running from the woods as she held her left hand.
Blood? I could smell it miles away...
"Sigrid's blood!" I whispered and ran towards her.
Running on the snow made my boots heavy, I kicked the boots off and ran towards Sigrid. The ground was so cold I could feel my blood freezing up.
"What happened?" I held her in my hands.
"Werewolf," She whispered looking frightened.
I could hear slow growling in the woods, it must have been an Omega who lost control. I wanted to pick a fight with someone - maybe today might just be the day.
The werewolf walked slowly out of the woods with his head down, my eyes lit up as I saw the size of the wolf.
"Is that an Omega?" I whispered.
"I don't think so," Sigrid turned her head and took a glance at the werewolf.
The werewolf raised his head and glared at us, he roared and the color of his eyes reflected in mine.
"Red eyes?" Sigrid whispered.
"He's an Alpha," I said with disbelief.
What is an Alpha looking for in the Omegas territory?
"How's your wound?" I asked Sigrid as I slowly raised her.
"It's not healing,"
"What!!" I looked at her hand and blood was still gushing out.
"Charlie?" Sigrid called out.
"Yeah?"
"I think we should run," She pulled my shoulder.
The werewolf started to cover some distance as he rushed towards us, I held Sigrid's hand and ran close to the cliff. She was injured and it slowed us down, my heart was pounding and my legs were freezing up.
"Leave me," Sigrid pulled her hand away from me.
"What?"
"Run Charlie, I'll buy you some time." Sigrid took a step back.
"No, please, no." I pleaded.
"I love you," Sigrid smiled as tears fell from her eyes.
"No!"
Sigrid ignored me and ran towards the werewolf, I chased after her. Sigrid slides under the werewolf and grabbed his tail, she tried to toss him to the other side but the injury on her hand restricted her. The werewolf kicked out and used his claws to scratch Sigrid's chest.
She kneeled on the ground as her blood turned the white snow around her to red, the werewolf growled at her, and just when he was about to go for the kill. I impulsively grabbed his tail and tossed him to the other side.
Sigrid isn't dying on me! And nobody is allowed to bully her instead of me!
He roared, and I roared back at him. My eyes turned from hazel to bright blue, I was an Omega challenging an Alpha. My odds of survival is pretty much zero.
I wasn't planning on shape-shifting to a werewolf and taking him head on, I just tapped some energy from my inner wolf - so I could run faster and take Sigrid the fuck out of here.
The werewolf used his paw to attack me - I blocked it but the force was enough to make me roll like a snowball. I staggered to my feet and realize there was's no point blocking his attacks the only chance I've is to find an opening and make a run for it.
He raged towards me and just before I could resist him, his claws went through my torso.
"Fuck!" I cursed.
He bashed me against a tree and blood gushed out from my mouth, I collapsed on the ground unable to move, my heartbeats fast as my sight was getting blurry. I was going to die and I knew it, but there was one thing I couldn't help myself but think about.
Why would an Alpha pick a fight with an Omega?
He growled at me and wanted to go for the kill, I closed my eyes waiting for him to finish me off.
"Leave her alone!" Sigrid's voice jolted me back to reality.
She held the werewolf's tail and tossed him to the other side, she touched my hand gently and her green eyes stared deeply into mine.
"We can take him," Her voice sparked with rage.
"But,"
"We can't die here, Charlie, fucking get up,"
I dragged myself up from the ground.
"What's the plan?" I asked placing my hand on my bleeding torso.
"Let's push him off the cliff,"
I stared at the werewolf who was filled with rage and the instinct to kill, Sigrid slipped a sharp tree branch into my hand.
"Okay? Let's go!" She ran towards the werewolf, he focused on her and tried to use his jaws to rip her throat out.
I froze at the spot not knowing what to do, I'd just watch my best friend fighting an Alpha by herself, the werewolf pushed Sigrid towards the cliff. She tried to gain her balance but the snow grabbed her feet.
Seeing my best friend about to fall down a cliff, I ran on impulse and stabbed the werewolf's neck - he whimpers in pain and tried to bite the stick off his neck but his mouth couldn't reach the spot. Sigrid ran from where she stood, then I kicked the werewolf down the cliff.
My bone made a cracking sound it was agonizing, I collapsed on the ground and Sigrid rushed over to me.
"Are you okay?" She said slowly touching my lips.
"I'm not dead right?"
"Well define dead." She lets out a soft chuckle.
We both needed medical attention.
"Sorry, I'm late,"
A voice rang through our ears. I sat up straight and turned my head back, my eyes lit up as I mentioned his name. "Hayden!"
