"Yes thank you". Avice bowed out of the resturant after getting rejected for the fourth time. She sighed as she stood in front of the resturant, glancing down at the phone screen in front of her. It was almost five in the evening and she still had four more places to visit. Luckily, four places, paying wages, had promised to get back to her while four had rejected her.
The people who promised to get back to her actually said so because of her good looks, they said it'd attract customers.
Avice dragged herself away from the resturant front door and followed the map on her phone. She contemplated on going back to the pack because it was getting late. She didn't want to walk back to the pack at night, in the dark and through a creepy forest.
She fastened her pace as she followed the map leading her to another resturant, promising herself it was the last one she was visiting. Resturants and cafés were the only places she could work confidently. Probably because she grew up working with her mom in her resturant that crashed a year ago.
Avice stopped. She turned her head for the umpteenth time, taking in nothing but the people walking in and out of shops around. The street was a little bit packed and there were cars of different colours parked on the side of the road. No one was suspicious, infact no one was staring at her to be precised. But why was she feeling that way? Like someone was spying on her?
"Watch where you're going!" A lady bumped into her, snitted and walk away.
Avice scoffed. "Why should I watch my steps when you're the one who clearly needs glasses!" She screamed after her but the woman didn't look back. She just kept on walking. Did she purposely say that to annoy her? She couldn't believe the woman was blaming her for her mistake. "Sick people everywhere".
Stealing one last glance at the scenerio behind her, she lifted her legs and ventured into another street with less packed people, and continued to follow the map.
By the time she was done with the last place which rejected her, it was almost seven. The boss had given her a long, agonizing delay before coming to tell her that she had found someone else.
Now, Avice was walking and running at the same time. She didn't want to walk through the forest in the dark and her phone which was supposed to be her last hope was saying its last prayer.
"Fuck this". She cursed as she jumped into the woods, running like her life depended on it. Sure, her life depended on it. If any creature were to jump out of no where, she'd fall down and say her last prayer with her phone.
With time, the sky got darker and darker until Avice could not see her hands and legs. She brought out her phone and turned on the flash light but it died on her two minutes later.
"FUCKKK!" Avice let out the moment her phone said goodbye, leaving her in the dark and her voice echoing in the woods. She was all alone, hungry, sad and angry. She was yet to even learn how to mindlink yet.
"Oh shit, what the fuck is this?" She cursed, still standing on the same spot for the past five minutes, not knowing where to turn to. She squinted her eyes, trying to see if werewolves had night vision too but the only thing she saw was the creepy image her eyes made out of the dark.
Trusting in the God that she had always blamed, she lifted her legs and started following it. Yes, she was heading wherever her legs were taking her. She was blindly trusting her legs like it had a life of its own.
Seldomly, she'd crash against a tree with rough bark and make another left or right turn, wincing at the pain it caused her forehead afterwards.
Ugh! Rex sighed as she watched her repeat the same path again. She was not even on the right track to began with. She was heading east instead of south and was perambulating with no sense of direction.
If he was asked how he was able to follow her from morning till night, he'd stare at the person and ask himself the same. As much as he hated to use the word 'enjoy', that was the only word that could describe how he felt while watching her all through out the day. Weirdly, her actions were amusing and the way she purely exhibited her emotions each time she was rejected kept him interested.
There was nothing to suspect in her movements. He had listened to each and every conversation she had and all she spewed throughout were lies. She talked about how she had been working in resturants all her life and how good she could handle bad-tempered customers. For all he knew, Eliana had never worked in a resturant before. And it was strange. Everything about her was strange.
Ever since she woke up.
"Fuck". Rex muttered when a twig snapped beneath his feet. He had been maintaining silence as he followed her around but the sharp noise happened to ruin everything.
Eliana's head snapped towards the direction of the sound but he knew she wouldn't be able to see him. He was sure she could not see her feet with those eyes. But Rex could see her. He could see her trembling hands as she stared at him.
"Is anyone th–ere?" She stuttered, her rapid heartbeat answering her question. Her eyes were wide open and terror was vivid in her tune. And somehow, it amused him because she believed Eliana to be a strong and brave werewolf. But the person he was staring at looked like she was peeing in her pants.
Wanting to double the fear, he snapped another twig and this time, she jerked and turned three sixty degrees before she yanked her shoe off her left leg.
"Who's there?"
Rex lifted his legs, making sounds with them to make her think someone was after her, aiming for her life but he didn't go close to her. He didn't want her to catch his scent.
"The last thing I'd do if i were you is harm me. I'm not ordinary". She threatened as she spun around, squinting her eyes and holding her shoe, which was supposed to be for defence.
Rex made another loud sound, wanting to hear more.
"Shit, you'll only lose your life if you take mine. I have friends...friends who are not...normal". Her voice echoed louder in the quiet forest.
Rex shook his head. Was she talking about werewolves? Tormenting her again but harder this time, he kicked a small rock, but big enough to fit in his palm, towards her direction.
She flinched and almost landed on her ass when the rock fell on the ground not too far from her. Bending to find her shoe which slipped off when she tried to keep her balance, she ranted,
"You're underestimating me, whoever you are. Don't try to scare me. I'm not fucking scared of you". She found her shoe and stood properly, mimicking a stance often used by boxers with her hands fisted. "I'm not just a girl. I am very strong. I'm not scared". She bounced on her feet, her face screaming the opposite of her words.
Rex bit back a smile that was growing from within as she threatened emptily. He made another sound but a faster one this time to make her think he was actually coming for her.
Eliana jumped back on hearing the sounds but she refused to run. Rex thought she was acting brave until she opened her mouth, and the words he never expected fell out of it.
"I have a mate! A husband to be fucking precise and he's...he's a vampire. A werewolf also. He'll fucking come after you if you kill me. It's real. This isn't a fucking prank".
Damnit! Did she just put herself in more danger? If by chance a rouge or hunter was near, her words would've taken her to an early death bed. Was she dumb or pretending to be dumb?
She was carelessly swinging the shoe in her hand as she spilled shits about vampire abilities and how quickly Rex snapped people's necks, just to scare whoever was after her.
Even a child could hear the fear in her voice.
Rex waited, and listened attentively to the slient whisper she made, trying to piece the words together.
'Please don't come for me. Rex will be anything but sad and angry if i die. He'll happily pay you to butcher me into pieces as well. Please don't come for me. I beg you". Her voice trembled even as she prayed.
Rex's lips curved into a slight smile, but the next second, he was questioning himself. Why did he just smile? He didn't smile because of her, did he?
The hell?
"Lia! Eliana!" Adeline's voice echoed through the woods, sending every sleeping bird on the tree away. Eliana dropped her shoe, a new hope washing all over her terrified face.
"Ad—Adeline. Is that you?" She wore her shoe, her voice cracking at first. When Adeline called again, she followed the direction of the sound. "Adeline! Where are you?"
Rex watched her disappear into the darkness and Adeline's scolding voice followed. Eliana cried to her, rambling on about an invisible person chasing after her.
Rex turned as playtime was over. He never knew tormenting someone could be fun. Especially tormenting Eliana. The way her cheeks flushed and—the fuck.
Rex shook his head, questioning his sanity. "What the fuck am I doing?"
'I know, you're thinking about her'. His wolf, Texas replied.
'Shut the fuck up'.
