Nick had appeared in the dorms shortly after Midoriya and Bakugo had been dragged back. He had just said that he had gone to bed early and had come down to see what the yelling was about.
Seeing Midoriya looking at him like he was a star and Bakugo glaring at him like he just burnt his childhood plush he was a bit confused.
Then again he was brought up in their conversation.
As the two slumped off to bed Aizawa waited for them to be gone before he turned to Nick and said, "And what shit did you get up to." His voice was more curious than grilling. Unlike Midoriya and Bakugo, he knew Nick was well beyond being a normal student.
All Might hearing something was going on looked over and paid attention to what was happening.
"Why do you ask?" Nick said as he stared at the stairs that the two boys had just gone up. He was smiling a bit, glad that others were being pushed to greater heights. That he hadn't just made the villains darker.
"Your hair is almost white now, and you're… thinner," Aizawa stated as he looked over at Nick.
Looking down at himself he saw that he was… thinner. His body had condensed down a fair bit even if he had added matter from around him.
Shrugging his head he responded. "Felt like a change…"
Nodding Aizawa clearly wasn't convinced but he dropped the subject. Continuing to his next thought he said. "I hope that you think before calling the number I gave you if you are planning to. They are waiting for you to make contact but now that you have your license I don't see a reason for you to do it." Aizawa said he didn't want his student joining them. He had such great potential for being a Hero.
"Waiting for me to make contact?" Nick said as he turned to Aizawa. "They already made contact with me after the license exam. The member of the committee I was with asked me to join his branch." His voice mimicked curiosity, after all, he already knew something was afoot. This was just a good chance to bring it up.
Pausing for a moment Aizawa shared a look with All Might before saying, "They are not meant to do that, at least they said they wouldn't." His voice was slow as if he was already thinking of what to say.
Speaking up All Might walked over and he said, "Young Hendrix. Do you mind telling us what happened before the villain attacked again? About the committee member." His voice was a bit worried.
Was something more going on here? No, they were probably just suspicious and wanted to see if the attack was linked to the member.
"Sure, shall we make sure Nezu is here too? I think he would like to hear it as well with how you guys are acting." Nick said as he turned and started to walk out of the dorm and towards the main building where he knew his mentor might still be.
---
He soon explained everything to Nezu, Aizawa and All Might, everything but how he caused the attack. He figured it was best to let them deal with most of the fallout in case any more members were planning anything. But he didn't like the idea that Masato would most likely have gotten away if Nick didn't do anything. So he didn't regret taking action, it had to be done.
Thinking this a part of him flared something that made him feel.
Warmer.
It had been the right choice, when you were betrayed by those with 'authority' you had to take matters into your own hands.
With the talk soon being finished as Nezu promised that he would look further into it Nick stood up from where he was sitting and left the room. Closing the door behind him.
As he walked away they all listened to his footsteps fading down the hall.
"He's changing isn't he." Aizawa said as he looked at the door.
"I am sure that he is just going through a tough time right now. Being so invovled in so many attacks must be weighing in the poor boys mind." All Might said, trying to excuse the change in the promising young man before him.
"I am sure that everything will be alright, while young, Nicklaus certainly is unique. I think that time will tell, but I am worried that he may start taking to many matters into his own hands as he grows. He has sought help before, but when he can deal with a problem on his own he may think it not necessary and act like a fool." Nezu stated getting a nod from Aizawa.
It seemed the three had a lot to think about, the young boy before them was growing, and maybe a bit too fast. But something was different, there was a coldness to his eyes now that had not been there before.
---
As the opening speech happened, Nezu explained that every young person before him was a successor to this society. Someone that would strive for greatness and reach the top of their field. That would climb the ranks of Heroes of Inventors or whatever they wanted to be.
How they would make a difference and guide Japan forward into the next generation.
And so the second semester started.
Standing in the crowd Nick tilted his head to the side… he had been here for a while now…
---
With the lesson passing and the mention of internships Nick didn't pay much attention, that was something he would deal with in a bit. But he had other plans that he wanted to ask Nezu about, something to do with that queen of Ice that he couldn't get out of his head.
He also needed to make time to finish making his own warping quirk and to offer to fix Kurogiri. Or at least try to, he was sure that he could though however.
The days passed and soon Midoriya and Bakugo were back in class. As they were all sitting around for homeroom Nick felt the vibrations of people outside the door, looking at it he noticed what must be happening, this was the start of the Overhaul arc. Oh, so free time basically unless something came up.
"The so called, 'Big Three.'" Nick heard Aizawa say from the front of the class as the door opened and in walked his friends.
Smiling at Mirio he waved getting a wave back from the boy. As the class started to excitedly ramble Nick just sat there waiting for this all to be over with.
With the comedy act of their introduction starting Nick looked at Amajiki and saw the boy look over at him as he was about to introduce himself. With an intense glare at the rest of the class, his eyes settled on his mate Nick. Calming down a bit it said, "I'm Amajiki Tamaki… nice to meet you." Turning around as he finished saying that and leaned his head against the wall.
As the class all responded in confusion at why he turned around Nejire spoke up, "your acting weird Amajiki! See there all confused! Hey guys! I'm Nejire Hado. We were requested to come to you all about your 'internships,' Also Hey Nick! How are you doing! It's been a while since you hung out with us, you busy? I heard that there was another attack at the license exam. Do you just attract trouble." She started to ask, going over to his desk to talk to him.
Seeing Aizawa sigh Nick just shook his head a bit. The rest of the class looked between Nick and the big three.
Putting his head against the desk Nick ignored Mirio's attempt at a comedy act. Only tuning back in when he heard the boy say.
"Let's go and fight! You versus me!!" His voice was super eager as he finished his explanation.
With Aizawa accepting he let Mirio lead them towards Gamma gym but just as Nick was about to leave Aizawa said, "Hendrix, while this farce is happening, Nezu wanted to see you. Go there now." His voice was monotone as he started to follow the class.
Saying a quick goodbye to Nejiro he turned and started to make his way to Nezu, what did that mouse want from him?
---
Nick sat on the dorm's roof as he looked at the setting sun, his gaze following the sunburnt oranges across the night sky. His hand idly played with a mass of deconstructed material that floated around in his palm.
Nezu had asked Nick what he had planned to do with the internships and Nick had been honest. He planned to leave the school while they were happening.
Nezu hadn't really been happy with the idea.
Tomura was out there running wild but he had lost his three strongest troops. Kurogiri, Dabi and Twice. Without them, he wasn't nearly as much of a threat and would have to build up forces again. If Nick had any time to do things it was now. He wanted to find the Ice Queen, and he had told Nezu.
--- Before ---
"I want to leave the school for a while." Nick said as he leaned back into the couch.
"Why?" Nezu had asked straight away.
"Because I want to find the Ice Queen, she was a variable that no one expected and she could further help Tomura in the future." He explained.
Responding with a sigh Nezu said, "Leave that to the pro Heroes' you are still a student. Let yourself do an internship normally, I already wanted to speak to you about that. Endeavor want-"
"-I will never work with Endeavor." Nick said, his voice becoming a low growl, why did everything become so deep. Shocked by the deepness of his own voice Nick's eyes snapped wide open as he coiled back. Why had he responded so violently, sure he didn't like the man but… Toga.
"What?" Nezu said, genuinely confused. Looked at Nick, eyes tracing over his face as he kept his gaze steady, searching for what was wrong.
"Sorry, I… I personally don't like Endeavor, I have heard from Shoto how he used to be and how he still is. The story of Toga hurts me… I will not work with a man like that." Nick said as he looked down.
Nodding Nezu said calmly, "That is understandable. I will not ask you to do that then. But still, leaving the school to find a villain we have no idea the whereabouts of is practically impossible. I cannot let you act rashly." Nezu said as he sat back further in his seat and took a sip of his tea.
"I have a lead, the man who is making the Nomu's, I think I can find him. Kurogiri… is a Nomu, the base quirk that was used to make his warping quirk is something that can make solid clouds. I believe that if I can turn Kurogiri back into who he was we can start making… sir?" Nick said, looking at Nezu whose eyes started to widen.
"Can you tell how old he was? The base body." His voice was suddenly serious.
Nezu had fallen for the bait. "The age was messed with since it is a created body, but I think it was around 30 or 31 maybe. Same age as Aizawa, at least from feeling alone. Although the body stopped growing at 17, the original one, around when they died." Nick said as he tilted his head to the side.
"Oh… dear." Nezu started to say as he stood up suddenly. "Nicklaus we are going to see Kurogiri right now. I am going to call ahead but I think that the person you might be talking about… was an old student."
The previous subject forgotten they soon were making their way to the hospital that Kurogiri was being kept in, trapped away with no records leading to his current location. He was hidden in case villains tried to take him.
Getting to the room Nick watched Nezu throw the door open basically. Calling out to staff he trusted as the body of Kurogiri was quickly moved to a medical room.
Alone in the room with Nezu and Kurogiri, all of it happening so quickly Nezu looked at Nick and said, "well?" his voice curious, telling Nick to start. To do something, anything.
"If I am able to do this can I go after the Ice Queen." Nick said, he was eager, he wanted to let loose and go further than he could with just an internship.
"I will see what I can do Nicklaus, just see if you can save Oboro…" Nezu spoke as he looked at the body of who he thought was his ex-student.
Putting his hand on the chest of Kurogiri Nick let his quirk flow through the body. And he felt the base components. It was sloppy compared to his own body and the new Nomu. It was lacking. But it was sentient. It had will.
Smiling slightly Nick allowed himself to be master over life for that moment.
And he snapped the threads.
Untangling them as they appeared in the room. Blazing lines of light that reached into un-seeable heavens filled the room with a brilliant glow, a mirage of colours. But a teal one stood the strongest. Wrapped and twisted by purple smoke.
Even Nezu could see it.
The lights came from the chest of the 'corpse' on the table before him.
The black smoke billowed out as it coated the floor of the room. Clouding out all the light as the 'threads' reaching into an unknown void started to shake and twirl desperately resisting control. But Nick did not yield.
With a mighty push the thread came undone as matter started to flow away from Oboro's body, Nezu could see it now. It was his student. The boy that had died all those years ago…
He was laying there, body spasming as a teal blue thread started to strengthen and thicken. Connecting to the 'light' above.
Before everything went black.
In the absence of that brilliant light, everything was dark for a moment.
But soon his vision adjusted again.
Before him was Oboro who sat up out of the black fog that started to dissipate, a corpse rising from the dead. Nezu was just starting to realize what was happening, Nick had played with a soul... and won.
Oboro was looking around confused before his eyes settled on Nick.
"I saw you, wreathed in golden flames… where am I? I was… I was kurogiri. But I know I am not. I remember… dying." His voice filled with shock. Confusion. He didn't know what was happening, that much was clear.
His memories were in turmoil as Nick's had been, his mind was trying to adjust to no longer being 'absent,' it was a big jump.
But he would be alright, he just needed rest.
His mind had to separate Kurogiri's memories from his own.
"You are alive again, I restored your body and brought your mind and soul back to what it was. Your quirk is still warp gate but it's nature is different." Nick stated as he looked at the 'boy' before him. Oboro still looked 17. His hair glowing blue 'cloud' like it was before but the nature of it was different.
"Welcome back to the land of the living Oboro." Nick said, holding his hand out.
He had just brought another person back to life.
