Chapter 17 - 17. Alex wins.

"The following are the rules: There are three rounds altogether. Each round is won by the first person by knocking their opponent's weapon away. There shouldn't be any fatalities and no drawing blood."

Alex had the same playful smirk he always had on his face that made Marjun uncomfortable. Marjun doubted Alex had planned something evil against him. He never knew that it was only a manipulative skill that Alex had mastered.

"Since rules are fine by both men, Let's Begin!" The Procter said before he left. While Alex remained in the same position he was in, Marjun narrowed his eyes at him. He wanted Alex to make the first step, hoping to gauge his antics. Based on it, he could tell if Alex could fight or not.

On the other hand, Alex smirked. He had a matching sly, mocking gaze that always riled Marjun up. He had all day and night too.

The onlookers stared at the two men, stuck in the same position, staring at each other in a silent dare, not even moving at all. Neron was getting quite upset. He didn't know if somehow Alex had managed to trap Marjun in a trance, thereby making him not being able to move. He had to do something.

"Marjun, what's going on?" He yelled. The entire village turned to glare at him. They were enjoying the silent battle. "Uh.. did you gather us here to watch you in a staring contest?" Disregarding Neron, everyone redirected their attention to the men standing before them.

Marjun let out a sharp sigh. He backed up a little, turned around, put his left foot forward, and rapidly moved toward Alex. Alex did nothing; he just let Marjun enjoy himself to the fullest.

Alex knew that he wasn't very skilled. So, the best way to understand was to focus on Marjun and his movements. His eyes focused on Marjun's pattern of moving feet, the direction of his sword swinging. Somehow everything moved in slow motion, which made him smirk. The next second, Alex turned around swiftly, waving his sword lightly before he swung it towards Marjun. When he stopped, he was already standing behind Marjun, with his sword pointing directly at his spine's blank point, shocking Marjun, which made Marjun drop his weapon.

"Alex is the winner of the first round." Proctor's voice rang in the arena.

The villagers cheered on Alex's victory excitedly. This was what they expected from the Dragon's waker. The first round ended so fast, even after it got delayed by the starting contest.

Marjun exhaled again defeatedly as anger coursed through his veins. Getting into stance, he held his sword in front of him. This time he was determined not to move until Alex had moved. Alex started to attack after analyzing Marjun's thoughts and deeds. He twisted twice before reverting to his right leg and standing with his left foot in front. Although he waved his sword, Marjun could cut it with the blade he had.

Alex turned and swung his sword again, Marjun was ready to defend as Alex went with an unordered pattern of hits. Marjun's defending made Alex drop his smirk.

He kept attacking, and Marjun kept defending, making Alex scowl. Alex could feel himself getting agitated and almost angry. His weapon got knocked out of his hand, making him lose round 2 immediately.

"Marjun is the winner of the second round. Now, let the Final round begin."

Both the fighters' scores were 1 and 1, Equal scores. The final round was the deciding factor.

Villagers split into two groups, one supported Marjun while the other was Alex. Marjun could see that their heart was with Alex. He vexed.

Alex picked up his sword and took a deep breath. He reminded himself who he was. Alexander with no last name, and he had nothing to lose. But right now, he wouldn't want to lose the battle against Marjun because then he would lose the only thing that seemed to spark an interest in his existence.

Marjun saw the varying expressions that flashed across Alex's face, and he smirked. He had managed to wipe Alex's confident smirk and that was all he needed for a sign that he would win.

Alex stood up, gripping his sword tightly. He resumed his attacks, but Marjun easily defended them. Alex realized he couldn't win in a direct fight, so he formulated a plan. When the moment came, he smirked. Marjun's confidence faltered as he saw the smirk on Alex's face. As Marjun raised his sword to defend, Alex moved swiftly, placing his arm in the path of Marjun's sword. Marjun's eyes widened in shock as he saw what was happening, and his gaze locked with Alex's, who maintained his mocking expression.

He could immediately tell it was a plan and Alex had done it intentionally, but who would believe him?

Once the sword left his skin, Alex yelped in pain. Everyone was in shock as they stared at the red liquid flowing down Alex's milky skin, giving it a splash of color.

"The rules said no blood!" Alex whined. "Ow.." he cried.

"Marjun, you lost the round for breaking a rule. Alex is the winner of the third round and has won two rounds, in the fencing game."

Marjun stuttered. "That's not fair, he did it intentionally!"

Everyone stared at him in disbelief.

Can he not spare the injured opponent even an apology?

He still bragged about it?

Neron was feeling very embarrassed at the moment and he carefully slipped away. As he left, he turned to find Alex's mocking gaze on him. He knew his son was right, but he would not dare to support him before an angry mob of villagers.

Marjun watched as the royal servants tended to Alex's injury. He fumed with anger before placing his sheath back in its place.

"The game is officially closed for the day. We resume tomorrow by dusk, as is custom for when one opponent is injured."

The villagers began to murmur among themselves. a

"Fear not." The man said. "Tomorrow's battle will be hotter. The archery, the wrestling, the hand combat as well."

Alex's smirk disappeared instantly. Wrestling? Hand combat? Where was he when they did such things in the village?
