Detective Haas was the one that first arrived at the scene on that day. He saw three guys laying on the ground around me. One of them almost choked on his vomit, another one passed out and lay face down, and the last one looked like a bloody mess of meat.
He first approached holding his gun up front, then saw that I was completely exhausted and didn't have any will to fight or resist, just sitting on the ground holding and comforting Shu as he was clinging on to me.
I raised my hands and said I was the one that called the police, I'm turning myself in.
When the other guys arrived and they pushed me to the ground and handcuffed me, Shu was still refusing to let me go so they had to forcefully separate him from me.
They then dragged me into the police car and I was driven away. The last I saw of Shu was crying while the detective knelt and tried to comfort him.
What the detective saw when he arrived at the scene and the way he saw how Shu was to me played a big factor in the proceedings that followed. While others had their doubts, he was completely convinced of our version of the story. Although I was being interrogated by him, at times it felt like he was counseling me.
He also came to visit me a few times when I was in the detention center. I was refusing to see Shu but I talked to the Detective. He asked me how things were going and brought me some books to read. He was one person that kept his faith in me while I was cast away.
And now we were in the police station again after all these months, and Detective Haas spoke to me in the interrogation room, although it wasn't really an interrogation.
"Boh. You gotta tone it down. Learn to control yourself. You are better than that"
"I'm sorry"
"I'm also sorry that everyone else at the school is treating you like this. To protect Shu, the only thing I could tell the headmaster was that those guys attacked you and Shu and it was a self-defense gone a bit too far"
"Thank you"
"If I wasn't carrying the badge, I would have been the same as you in that situation, if not worse"
"...."
"But you gotta put it behind you. Did you see how Shu was reacting?"
"Yeah…"
"The boy is scared. He is so scared of losing you. I know it is unfair to ask this from you, but he needs you, and from what I can see, you need him too"
"..."
"Don't do anything that will get you guys separated again. Okay? It won't be good for anybody and nobody will be happy"
"I know…"
"Can you promise that you will keep things under control?"
"Detective…"
"Yeah"
"Is there a place where people like me can go? A school for… guys like me? Or should I just quit and get a job? It will be hard for me to get a job though wouldn't it?"
"There are places. But you don't belong there"
"But I don't belong here"
"Ask Shu if you don't belong here. He will tell you the answer"
"Thank you, detective…"
"Be a good boy. Go home and rest. Take a few days off, and go to school when you are ready. I will explain the situation to the headmaster in a…diplomatic way"
"I really appreciate it"
The detective got up and gave me a pat on the shoulder.
I was escorted out of the police station and went back to my, and Shu's home.
