Chapter 3 - chapter 2 part 2

With a siren's scale in my hand I could cross off one item from my to-do list. The next task wasn't so forgiving, taming a mare of Diomedes typically known as a man-eating horse. Like, what happened to good old carrots and apples but who can blame a horse for wanting his protein right. This was evidently no easy task, Diomedes' horses are as strong as they are carnivorous in fact they are rumoured to feed and prey on normal horses and, sad to say, unicorns. To think what twisted spawn of satan would harm a sweet loveable unicorn, purely evil but whatever it was, I wanted in.

Before my venture I borrowed some loincloth and ink mixed in soulsand to make a DIY blood contract. All I had to do was write my terms and conditions using the soul ink and place a drop of my blood as a signature. That was the easy part, the real difficulty was getting the horse to sign. Commonly used on magical creatures that are otherwise in capable of speech, blood contracts are of course still contracts meaning the terms and conditions of the horse would appear on the parchment as well, crazy stuff. I went on hunting spree to catch a few harpies which are sort of a bird-human mashup. I was hunting creatures that considered me as food in fact a delicacy and the setting sun didn't really do me any favours either. I took cover in a small cave I found in the mountain, it's former inhabitant, a rooster- lizard hybrid had the pleasure of joining me to dinner, I made him a meal I mean literally, the rooster-lizard was the meal. All things considered I couldn't hunt hawk-eyed bird-people at night so I called it quits and saved them for tomorrow.

"Run Gene, go protect your brother", a shadowy figure commanded. I panicked and started running, stopping dead in my tracks, I shouted back, "but I don't have a brother." Immediately the earth starting moving, the ground ripping up between my feet. A huge face formed in the ground, "free me", he demanded. As he opened his mouth I fell in and with that I opened my eyes and found myself on the edge of the cave's mouth. The first light of day broke the restless night and my nocturnal hunters were tired and stuffed which made them slow, this was the perfect chance for my hunt. I quickly headed out and crafted my bow, checking a few mice traps I had set before sleeping, I used the mice as bait and of course with the scent of a little fresh blood my trap was set. About thirty minutes later I had successfully shot down two harpies now all that remained was my man-eater. The dead harpy was probably enough to draw some attention so I hid in a bush and patiently waited.

The ground beneath me began to rumble and to my dismay the whole herd was charging towards me, I quickly reached for a tree branch, climbed as high as I could and hoped that these monsters wouldn't notice me. As the creatures chaotically feasted on the dead harpies I drew my bow hoping to scratch just one horse. Immediately one bumped into my tree and my hand slipped letting the arrow fly

into one horse's behind, a small neigh and a kick were fortunately all that came of it. I lost my balance and found myself hanging on to the branch with my body just above one horse's lowered head. Were the creature to raise it's head it would definitely notice and make me the dessert. Panic stricken, I

attempted to lift myself up into the tree but my fingers were already slipping, with one hand sore all that was holding me up was my sweaty left hand. In that moment my fingers began to slip and I landed firmly on the man-eater's back.

Wasting no precious I drew it's blood with my obsidian pocket knife and the contract was forged, the creature threw me off it's back neighing as if making a war cry it's deathly gaze fixated on my poor defenseless self. The rest of the horses stopped eating what was left of the corpse and a brief silence commenced as every horse turned to look at me. Playing dead was obviously off the table so I did what any hunter would do in this situation, I swiftly rose to my knees and placed my hands together in prayer to whichever god chose to pity me. Please save me, I prayed out loud. Immediately the horse I had grazed opened it's funny-looking mouth and I closed my eyes hoping my death would be painless, I felt myself getting tossed into the air and plop I landed on the horse's back. "Your wish is my command", said a female voice and like any normal person, I passed out.
